another proof article for this 4K concept :)
-
difference in sharpness also can be caused by different lenses or different DOF, so its can't be too objective in this test.
again back to filmic look its also too complex and subjective. for example scene with bike as for me more cinematic in BMCC version, and scene with musicians is more filmic in ikonoskop version.
if exclude artistic feel, composition, lighting and other outside factors, the filmic "look" its not a magic its just a complex of parameters of camera: dynamic range, shutter speed (not sure about shutter type, but would like to find the truth)+exposure+lens+aperture+grain+zero digital artifacts+you can do anything with colors if you shoot raw.
so slightly different shutter speeds - and one footage became less "filmic" than other.
-
BMCC aliasing style:
-
Ikonoskop:
- purple tint (as usual)
- low dymamic range => image exposed differently than BMCC => deep dark shadows, which may cause people think that camera has more cinematic-dramatic look... also uncomfortable burning highlights.
- slightly softer image, but for example cello strings looks better.
BMCC:
- greenish tint (unexpectedly)
- slightly sharper image, but sharper not always means better
- yes it has more aliasing and moire.
- rolling shutter bla bla bla
p.s. thanks for this long awaited comparison ;)
-
hmm, very strange example of footage. as to screen grabs - clean image (because RAW) with low dynamic range (because KAI sensor) what else could be expected from this camera? it is also could be very interesting to see aliasing tests compared to Blackmagic camera...
BTW nice looking software UI as for me!
-
funny that this picture was posted on reduser forum. some people told their ideas about exclusive RED firmware in those drives but without any proof links. few days later moderators deleted the topic and comments as KGB agents :)
-
regarding long life RED SSD look at this picture below. RED uses usual SSD drives in their proprietary overpriced mags :) http://www.flickr.com/photos/91573748@N08/8309061458/in/photostream/

seems in addition to sharpness loss at the frame edges this adapter produces additional aberration effect...
-
but from other side dynamic range of test videos from big brother of this camera for my eye visually looks mush wider than 11.5 stops.
-
11.5 stops is epic fail for this device. i personally vote for same camera but with 16 mm sized sensor with wider dynamic range which can be used with tons of inexpensive lenses. and also allow to reduce the camera cost as so as small sensors are pretty inexpencive.
-
nice
-
my test chart based on BMC sensor pixel size specs. 16 mm lenses almost fit to 2k, wonder why everybody so need those strange 2.5 k size? i believe 2k will be also looking good, same to 1080.

Blackmagic Design hasn't confirmed that its Cinema Camera uses the BAE/Fairchild CIS2051 sensor.
its clear that it uses that sensor without BM confirmation. Just look here even 30 fps limit match to BM http://ridl.cfd.rit.edu/products/sCMOS/scmos_white_paper_8mb.pdf mera specs. -
just for test: classic Kodak test image in 2K and 4K. in this image i combine 2k and 4k areas. Did you see where one ends and another begins? Funny isn't it?

There is a button DOWNLOAD there. The aliasing is more visible in motion, not in still grab.

Didnt really notice the aliasing but i wasnt looking for it really hard.
also that is still 720p, not 1080
its 1080 there and there is no need to looking hard to see it. also it is very strange black flickering line in the upper left corner

Dynamic Range
Yes dSLR such as the 5D2 has high DR that is why you see highlight roll off unlike the GH2 were it clips highlights.
i also have theory that canon DSLRs has some kind of tricky digital limiter for highlights. those burning holes always looks smudged by yellowish paint on canon footage :) -
Dynamic Range

those few more stops are not so simple to do. i believe 13 stops its camera limit, which is still pretty cool. and they should correct first those strange color blocky sensor noise. -
it definitely needs a test footage. in theory cmv2000 capable for tricky nonlinear modes with 13.3 (80 db) or 15-fstops (90db) which can be done by complicated sensor curve turning, and seems its not so easy as people imagine. in linear it capable for mode 10 f-stops (60db) it really pointless for cinema even with its 120 fps
here is for example some footage from other camera with looks like same sensor http://www.indiecam.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=188&Itemid=108 -

Dynamic range regarding to zacuto tests:

BTW they are just announce the 2012 test available at may 9 for:
• Sony F65
• ARRI Alexa
• RED Epic
• Sony FS100
• Sony F3 w/slog
• Canon C300
• Canon 7D with Technicolor settings
• Panasonic GH2 (hacked and non-hacked)

What about this video which is shot with (FS100) people that know how to use it quiet well.
I think the FS700 will be very popular among Indie film maker.

Same can be done with any other camera or $500 DSLR. This footage shows to us lighting, lenses, filters, movie looks filters in post. Also it shows same low dynamic range of camera. -

same story as usual - aliasing, noise, low dynamic range and compression :)
@shijan @FilmMan Excuse me ? you all seems to me like some hollywood professional philmmaking crew judging 8000euro camera just like that. I guess my either must have been working with these camera for a week at last. What are you comparing the noise and aliasing with ? 5Diii I expect :D. Don't be so harsh and quick judging on something that progresive and full of inventions from Sony, who are really doing something for the normal consumer market.
Just look at Blackmagic Cinema camera footage and you understand why we are so bored (Sony F3 and Red Epic/Scarlett Canon C300 have same dynamic range but expencive, Si-2K maybe too, Arri Alexa has even more but it is out budget even for more production studios). Maybe here also can be added ikonscop DII with black and white sensor but it needs more tests to see. There are also other more expensive cameras like Panavision Genesis or Sony F65 but there is almost no info about them for masses.
Everything else as for me its a tv cameras, digital cameras, scientific but not a cinema cameras.
Its cool to see hi-speed framerates but what sense of them if the quality is so shitty? Im personally not a prouction studio and even not a filmmaker i believe, i do videoart and contemporary art, but i just want normal quality for my works, same as produces my 35mm film photo camera.
