Laughable Chris and Jordan video on medium format

Yeah, a gross over simplification in order to generate clicks. It is the job of people like DPReview to break the surface and expand the knowledge of those in the market for gear. It's incredibly depressing to see the sheep in the YouTube comments. The same people who rave about full frame Sony this and Canon that, all seem to buy the Chris & Jordan line that sensor size doesn't matter and it all looks the same. Why aren't they all shooting with a GoPro then! I really don't believe DPR are this stupid and I think it could be a ploy. They are either doing this on purpose to create controversy, discussion and attention, or pandering to their vast majority of readers who own Sony & Canon full frame or APS-C cameras. If Amazon sells more of those, DPR has done its job. GFX and medium format users probably don't need to read DPReview anyway for advice on sensor size! Especially not when it's this wrong. The F3.5 vs F1.8 shit is what really gets me. It's like comparing the top speed of a Ferrari and a family run-around, but never accelerating past 30mph... then claiming they are the same! WTF! It's impossible to satire it. It even feels stupid criticizing it because in order to do so you have to point out such blindingly obvious stuff! Every time Chris and Jordan recommend a full frame camera over micro four thirds from now on I will remind them of this video. -

Decided to pick one of these up for about 800 euros in Berlin off Amazon. It's good! Premium Apple-like build quality. 100% Display P3 gamut. HDMI input. Thin as a tablet. Two USB C inputs, powers over a single one, built in battery too. Adds touch screen capabilities to Mac OS, PC, etc. Bit like a Surface Pro but tethered to your desktop or laptop. It is pretty unique on the market. Of course the generic 1080p LCD models are much much cheaper at $200 but where's the fun in those?! 🙂

"Nothing unique or special about the look" "They are all equivalent... APS-C, full frame, medium format" *Stops down GFX lens to F3.5...."Same look to DOF as APS-C at F1.8" FUCK When camera store salesman become an authority on photography and video... You get this! Widespread misinformation. Sad to see how many people in the YouTube comments just accept it. Stopping down a medium format camera and then complaining it can't do anything different to an APS-C model at F1.8???? Put a Minolta MD 58mm F1.2 on APS-C, full frame and medium format and tell me they all look equivalent! With same lens, look would be completely different on all 3. Equivalency is being taken to mean there is no difference in the look of different camera formats. It completely ignores the fact that lenses are matched to sensor size. If you take one designed for one format and apply it to another, it looks different! I wouldn't be surprised if they punted this out just to generate the heat. It is after all quite chilly in Canada.

Counter hype-piece

I see it repeated a lot that heat held the EOS R5 back. Did you not witness the explosive climax of the story though? With the battery pull trick, timers, not reading temp until a firmware update, 2 hours of continuous 8K, Philip bloom's cats escaping a fire, Magic Lantern, EXIF data, wi-fi apps and all the rest? How can people be so forgetful?!

It's here https://www.eoshd.com/eoshd-pro-color-5/ Looking at that comparison of the default Sony profiles above, looks like one still needs it 🙂 Although ITU-709 brings out an appealing paleness and ACES looks decently flattering!

Dark times for Canon and the camera business https://www.eoshd.com/news/canon-facing-unprecedented-difficulties-shuts-down-massive-factory/ Just closed their massive factory in China. It produces 13 million lenses in one year... in a pandemic year (2020) no less. The chip shortage on top of the pandemic really seems to becoming a deafening crisis for camera makers. Smartphones remain the biggest threat, but never before has Canon felt the need to close a factory of this size, established for 32 years! Hope the employees can get a better job elsewhere and that they are treated respectfully during the termination process.

My mistake, I missed it. All 3 modules work including the 5x optical and all in 4K, albeit with very slightly different aspect ratios
-
It would also be good if the dev could enable RAW on the secondary cam modules. Would love to see the 5x periscope on P40 Pro spring into life. Would be like having a S16mm turret again.

There's an android powered Samsung APS-C camera with NX mount, would be interesting if the developer could support that - probably only in 1080p but worth a go surely 🙂 I think the old Android versions lack the recent API that supports raw even in stills mode though, so that might hold the older stuff back. LG V50 should be ok, but I think for same price you can get a better main sensor.
-
I hadn't realised it until you pointed it out, but Z9 is indeed 1340g which is on par with a D5 at 1400g and even more than S1H at 1150g! That's some heavy mirrorless camera. Hopefully they will trickle down ProRes and internal raw to a Z8 which will be a nice upgrade from a Z6. Have you considered getting a GH6?
-
Do you know if the raw compression real-time or applied to the DNG when you convert in-app? RAW12 = 12bit?
-
Went out to test a few shots in low light This one is ISO 1400: Didn't do any grading other than slight contrast bump in Adobe Camera Raw For a smartphone tis good ISOs over 1250 used to be completely unusable in stills mode let alone 4K video!! Going to see if 4K/120fps RAW works next.

CM1 is outdated now because of Android 4.0, so very little will work. Although it has the 1.0 type sensor and uses all of it, it's quite an old sensor in video terms with no 4K at normal frame rates. It maxes out at 15fps. So the slow sensor and slow processor, and lack of computational imaging, frame merging, or advanced HDR capabilities really hold it back. In some instances an iPhone from 2 or 3 years ago will beat it for stills, and certainly for video. So take a look at the latest Xiaomi and OnePlus stuff instead 🙂

Mi 10 is the cheap alternative. Usually on eBay for under $300 It shoots near identical video specs to the Mi 11 Ultra including 8K but the sensor is a bit smaller and lacks the periscope 5x folding optics. Sensor still massive compared to an iPhone though. I've been very impressed with it in 10bit 6K LOG and 8K H.265. The mc24 app is a good place to start for high bitrate video. Not tested the RAW app with it yet but will do soon.

Amazing image quality on the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra Take a look at the full res 4K RAW frame A crop of it below: It has all the characteristics you'd expect from RAW on the original Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera but in 4K! Noise is quite manageable up to ISO 1600. File sizes are around 3.8-4MB per frame though, so make sure you try this on a phone with a lot of built in storage 🙂 Not tried the pixel binned or 1080p modes yet. Also has a feature to crop the aspect ratio to a cinemascope style one, which may reduce file sizes. Didn't seem to change my end-recording though which was 4080 x 2152. On the Mi 11 Ultra, it reported 24p as officially compatible But also said 120p and 48p 4K may work too. Much to explore here.

Yes full steam ahead now, hope you continue to bookmark EOSHD 😉

I think Dual Pixel AF will come to Panasonic's next bunch of cameras. A lot of people here I am sure would love to shoot with an Alexa, Digital Bolex or RED with manual focus lenses or anamorphic LOMOs so autofocus isn't even the top priority for most but I do 100% agree it's very useful for every day work I really think the R5C should have these too, being a Cinema EOS camera and likely $6000+? It's more likely to be exact same hardware as R5C just with the fan and firmware update to remove the artificial record timer.

They should put a proper codec in there like ProRes because their 10bit 422 is very sluggish to edit at the moment. Anyone else find the same? And their Raw codec isn't anywhere near up to the performance of RED's or BRAW in Resolve!
