DPReview moan about Sony A9 banding with 7700hz LED advertising
Andrew - EOSHD replied to Andrew - EOSHD's topic in Cameras
Don't post personal info please bamigoreng. Why can't you speak for it? It's right in front of you. Try posting a link to EOSHD on their forums. Then you can perhaps speak up about it... You know, like someone with a spine and principals. This is one sentence in a big article praising the camera. And it only criticises it for one thing. Most of the people reading it aren't even pros looking for a 'low-cost' B camera. $2000 is a lot of money for enthusiasts. The 6D Mark II is quite fucking expensive for them, and it doesn't even have 4K. If he'd have said that, my respect for Barney would have increased, instead of his usual softly-softly approach to soft-pawing his critique out there to the manufacturers. Which is how they keep getting away with such distain for their customers in the first place (surrounded by YES MEN) It's one in a serious of negative A9 articles, you should learn to read between the lines. They should have shot with a Canon or Nikon under the exact same circumstances and done a proper evaluation of it across a range of cameras. Instead they chose to hold aloft some clickbate from youtube and do an analysis of the clickbate. The guy who did the original test shots, didn't even try the mechanical shutter to see what impact it would make on the banding. Until a global shutter comes along, you are going to get interference patterns sometimes on an electronic shutter...The article makes no mention of how every single rolling shutter system in the world even an Arri Alexa would struggle under those conditions... It just lays it all at the A9's door and then scampers off into the distance scott free. And in the same breath they praise the 6D Mark II and don't really mind that it lacks 4K. 6D doesn't even HAVE an electronic shutter at 20fps, 24MP RAW.... Yet Sony does and THEY get a kicking for it! Then put it in the headline then! "Very slight problem in 2% of shots at a particular sports ground"! Oh but that wouldn't be clickbait enough would it?! -
Your brother may have used it, you haven't, so it's a second hand opinion you've got of it. That 10bit LOG doesn't quite stand up to RAW isn't news. But it's the best codec and image processor available for the money with the most features and the nicest form factor. All are important here.

Focus distance.

Jimmy hasn't used a GH5, if he had he'd see that it had an image that is better than the Sonys, 10bit codec, much better colour, at least 12 stops dynamic range in V-LOG-L, far less compression, less macro blocking, clean shadows and it does have HFR 1080p all the way up to 180fps.

I'd definitely sell the FS5. The question is what's best to replace it with... GH5, E-M1 II, 1D C and A99 II would all be contenders if it were me choosing! These are creative cameras that get out of the way. The stabilisation is wonderful to have on the GH5 and E-M1 II. The E-M1 II is even smaller than the GH5... Ergonomically if you didn't like the RX10 III you might not like the 'feel' of the GH5's body, which is where the E-M1 II comes in. The 1D C shoots very decent 1080p, remember... so although the 4K image is clearly better than the FS5 and pretty much everything else, the file sizes can be a hassle unless you don't mind length transcoding sessions and having 10 or 12 CF cards on a shoot. The A99 II for me is a superb all-rounder which does everything well, especially slow-mo.

They should have called it the 80D X. That's what it is... An 80D with a bigger sensor!

Sorry if the description of Putin offends you. I don't actually like or trust what goes on and being "patriotic" does not for one second, for me, make a good person. He's patriotic in the sense that he is a soviet and considers the fall of the soviet union a disaster, saying in the documentary that "millions of Russians suddenly found themselves abroad". If you watch Stone's YouTube interview he describes Putin as patriotic to his cause, and that's just a true statement. As for his charisma there's no denying he's a wily old fox, but that doesn't make him a good guy either. And if Putin is involved in giving us Trump, which is strongly hinted at in episode 4 of the interviews by the body language, it's a big disgrace.

In Magic Lantern raw, not stock form. BIG difference. It's not all about content actually. People want to buy a future proof TV or best spec for the price. All my friends who have bought a new TV in the last couple of years have gone for a 4K model without exception, especially as the prices now are similar to a decent 1080p set and start at around £350 in the UK. Why wouldn't you? Various set to boxes, PCs, laptops, game consoles have a 4K picture and they want to make use of that, so it's not all about watching TV even. The awareness of 4K on consumer market is very high and even the PS4 Pro, etc. capitalise on the hype with their upscaling modes. That gives them all the more reason to upgrade to 4K if they don't have it already. Not many people keep the same TV for 15 years in today's fast moving age of cheap consumer goods. Sony have a smartphone with a 4K display now and it's a selling point in the eyes of the consumer. Whether you agree it makes sense or not. Sounds like the research you've seen is out of date by at least 2 years.

I don't know. By the way I have a question for you as well... Will there be 8K on the 5D Mark 6?

Personally I really love a popup flash!

Canon Rumors is a general-audience Canon site with no emphasis on video, yet their poll currently shows 36% of photographers are angry about the lack of 4K. That's a huge amount of people. Although 9000 voted so far in that particular poll, if you extrapolate that 36% to 36% of Canon's total sales, they are in the shit. Why piss off over a third of your customers? I have the Mk IV with latest firmware! Sometimes, with certain lenses, the AF can be pretty good... It's more the random reliability that kills it, along with the low light AF. It was a big reason behind me sticking with the 1D C and 1D X Mark II for stills work.

I bet the lenses are locking him into Canon. AF with the Metabones adapter is still very hit and miss for me.

DPReview moan about Sony A9 banding with 7700hz LED advertising

Here's the source DPReview are using for the article Doesn't look like click bait to me Here's the 1D X Mark II reacting even worse to high brightness pulsing LED light sources https://***URL removed***/forums/thread/4133297 But it didn't make the front page, obviously -

ES can get you teeth with built in Canon cameras, and they are the best teeth ever made. Amazing white balance. LED boards I assume are a problem for non-Sony cameras too then? Because this article will go round the internet and kill A9 sales like a mercenary assassin, which is really unfair as they are trying to innovate and Canon are taking the piss! -

Let's see how many people he defrauds out of their money on DPReview before they do something about it. -
I wrote for DPReview for a few years contributing video advice and where it was a talking point as on the 5D Mark III and Panasonic GH4, I wrote that part of the review. DPReview was for me the original trusted authority on digital cameras and it was an honour to work for them but I am really sad at what the site has turned into today. Read the full article

But Sony, Panasonic, Nikon, Olympus, Fujifilm have all come to the conclusion that 4K is good for profit and that their customers are asking for it. What's different with Canon?! Same customers!
