GH5 owners - 6 months later, how are you liking it?
Andrew - EOSHD replied to SuperSet's topic in Cameras
Not all use line-skipping. Pixel binning yes, not line-skipping. The former bins pixels in groups, say 3x3. It subsamples the image more intelligently than skipping entire lines. 120fps full HD on the A99 II, GH5 and Leica SL is definitely not awful. It's almost as good as the 1080/24p. 120p on the A7S II does not have less aliasing artefacts than the A99 II's full frame 120fps. It is a 2x crop and still has aliasing. The A99 II has no crop in 120p and less aliasing. The GH5 has the best dynamic range on the market for the price ($2000) especially in the Rec.709 picture profiles compared to Rec.709 on other cameras. In V-LOG it is competitive with S-LOG on the full frame Sonys. You have so much more headroom in the highs and lows with standard colour in 10bit. Even in 8bit I think colour and dynamic range is massively improved on the GH5 compared to the GH4. The GH5 is superb in low light as well, again in part thanks to 10bit, and in part the new sensor. AF is fantastic in stills mode, but not in video mode, but then there are very few cameras that ARE offering very good reliable AF in video mode with 4K for under $2000. -
Samsung NX1's Smart Range+ and 0-255 luma
Andrew - EOSHD replied to Andrew - EOSHD's topic in Cameras
In FHD it's the aliasing that causes the sharpened look, not the digital sharpening algorithm. This is all a bit of a pointless argument because in 4K on the NX1 you have the option in post how sharp or soft you want to go. The NX1 has a superb image. -
Foto Braune is my favourite for curiosities, old lenses, vintage things. A great guy and he speaks very good English! Enjoy your trip. Shame I'll be out of town when you arrive!

Samsung NX1's Smart Range+ and 0-255 luma
Andrew - EOSHD replied to Andrew - EOSHD's topic in Cameras
Even if you do think it's over sharpened at -10 (I don't - it looks similar to a Canon JPEG on default sharpness and no photographers are rounding on Canon claiming their photos are 'over sharpened') then it is a rather easy problem to fix. Downscale to 2.8K then upscale to 4K again. And if you want to fix your shooting style to get a less 'sharp' result there are numerous techniques, easiest being - Black Mist Pro on the lens and softer light, more diffusion. -
The thing with the aggregator sites is they tend to be very popular... but it's all built on somebody else's back. NFS barely had any original content of their own. Similarly 43rumors. I don't think it's morally right to base 100% of your business on the hard work of the crowd, doing the bare minimum yourself as a keyboard monkey to write headlines, a couple of paragraphs and the rest is cut & paste of text and URLs. It is killing the internet for the creator because the original content creator cannot maintain the same relentless levels of output and high traffic as the rumours sites and aggregator blogs, therefore can't compete. It's interesting that BMCUser has slowed down. I've not been on there for ages. Blackmagic have killed their mass appeal by doubling down on a pros-only focus. Reddit is fantastic. Thank you!!

Samsung NX1's Smart Range+ and 0-255 luma
Andrew - EOSHD replied to Andrew - EOSHD's topic in Cameras
16-235 in-camera stops the clipping so you should use that option like in my guide if you want to maximise dynamic range without having to fix the clipping problem in post. If you're going to fix it in post using 0-255 in-camera is ok. Smart Range + is a new thing, I saw the effect it had on JPEGs and realised it could be enabled in movie mode as well... I assumed before that it was some kind of Samsung TV thing!! -
Apparently this thread is a place to call out a well liked member for his use of non-PC terms from South Park!! Maybe I should rename EOSHD to No Jokes School.

When the NX1 came out Philip Bloom bought it but didn't use it very much as he said the dynamic range was limited. I thought it was a bit limited too, turns out we were both wrong... Here is the effect of Fast Colour Corrector in Premiere changing output levels to 16-235 for NX1 clips recorded in 0-255 RGB range mode. Original file - blown out clouds... And here is an additional 1-2 stops in the highlights from enabling Smart Range + in-camera - I'd put this camera right up there for image quality now... Right near the top of the pile. Both sample images shot with the superb NXL adapter by the way with Canon 50mm F1.2L full frame FOV and DOF. Thanks Luca

"Meanwhile" leave it out. This isn't the place to be language police. It's a place to talk about the subject raised in the top post!

The audience shifts over time and keeps evolving with the site. NFS have written pretty much nothing but articles designed to reel in clicks so their audience has shifted to the lowest common denominator of people. It's what you get if you have to pay for your visitors or entice them with headlines, rather than building a community around real content and real filmmakers / enthusiasts. The people left online overall are the same as ever, not just trolls but real people - pros and artists still use the internet, they have not gone away! It's just that maybe they don't want to read or engage with a shit website. The problem is that there are too many shit websites around and it's hurting the internet generally. Most sites are completely under the spell of clickbate and bad content for hits and ad revenue... I have completely lost faith in pretty much all of the photographic / video sites to be honest.

Nikon D850 development with 8K timelapse officially announced.
Andrew - EOSHD replied to wolf33d's topic in Cameras
Because time moves in a forwards direction! The 42MP sensor came out in 2015, it's practically 2014 tech! Thankfully Sony isn't Canon and they do go forwards rather than use the same sensor tech for 10 years. Or even backwards with 6D Mark II. -
The way the contrast detect based AF on the GH5 works is by cranking the sensor to frame rates of 240fps, maybe even higher, and very CPU intensive analysing of bokeh and depth of field (DFD mode). So you can't expect AF to be as fast at 24p in video mode as it is in stills mode. What Panasonic need to do is get Dual Pixel AF technology on the sensor. It is the only reliable way of doing good AF for filmmakers. The phase-detect A6500 route is a dead-end, it's just not bomb proof enough. It hardly ever tracks reliably, especially in low light. Meanwhile good old manual focus has resulted in many classic films, so I suggest we stop being so lazy and use that instead

And the upcoming iPhone Pro too.

So about the workflow... If you wanted to shoot RAW, you would then convert to DNG and import the folder to Resolve... Anyone got a different plan?
-
Still don't really understand how this situation came about. Apple have promoted cameras before, the Blackmagic Cinema Camera for instance because of Thunderbolt. Is Apple trying to court pro users again? Been a while.

Why are their traditional customers not buying Raven? Just no interest in a lower-end model or something else?

Great work!! Helios 44-M 58mm F2 in that daffodils shot by the way... Not bad for a 50 euro lens is it?!

It has amazing dynamic range even in Rec.709. It has remarkably low rolling shutter compared to Sony. The 10bit files are amazing in low light with lots of 'depth' and richness to the shadows. It helps that it's so good in low light anyway with very clean ISO 3200. Tons of features, I will write a guide about it but it will take a while. Review coming soon, I know it's been ages but I will get round to it! -

No EVF makes DSLR video shooting a real pain in the ass vs mirrorless to be honest. -
The original creator's instructions are in the Readme.txt file as part of the download (links below), all credit goes to the hack dev. You must read this before installation. However I thought I might summarise how to get started here in a sticky post to save searching for help (if you need it) in the long threads. PREPARE CAMERA 1. Ensure fully charged battery 2. In the main menu, ensure Auto Display off = 5 minutes and Power Save = 10 minutes 3. In the main menu, ensure Touch Operation = on 4. Ensure firmware is version 1.41 for the NX1 (you can view this in the main menu under the option Device Information). If older, update firmware according to Samsung's instructions online or via Wifi in the camera menus. 5. Format a memory card in-camera 6. Turn off bluetooth and wifi, set mode dial to M PREPARE THE NX-ON-WAKE PATCH 1. From the following link download nx-on-wake.zip https://github.com/ottokiksmaler/nx500_nx1_modding/blob/master/nx-on-wake/nx-on-wake.zip 2. Extract all files in nx-on-wake.zip to the ROOT directory of your SD card. 3. Insert the SD card into the camera, turn on the camera and wait 4. A touch screen menu appears to enter a "Magic Number". This is in the Readme.txt, to ensure you have read it. Please look at that document carefully for the 6 digits. I found "357669" but check to see if different. 5. Message "Thanks, preparing the ground" will appear and the display will go blank momentarily. Green light begins to flash... WAIT AT LEAST 5 MINUTES 6. Leaving the camera powered on, pull the battery out and wait 10 seconds, then put the battery back in. WAIT AT LEAST 4 MINUTES 7. Turn off the camera using the power switch. 8. Pull the battery, wait 5 seconds and put the battery back in. Turn on the camera. 9. Look at the green LED, you will see it blink 4 times (one long and three short blinks), to confirm everything went ok. 10. Turn off the camera and remove the SD card. INSTALL THE MAIN HACK 1. Download nx-patch.zip from https://github.com/ottokiksmaler/nx500_nx1_modding/tree/master/video-bitrate-mods/nx-patch 2. Delete the all the nx-wake related files and folders from the SD card 3. Extract the nx-patch zip and place everything in the root directory of your SD card 4. Insert card into camera, turn on the camera and wait for the 'Please wait, installing...' message and for it to do its thing 5. Hack should now be activated, turn off/on camera and you can enter the hack menus by rapidly double-pressing the LCD illumination button on the NX1 6. In the hack menus (double-press LCD illumination button), you can select bitrates, and change Pro1 from 80 to an even higher value like 160 7. Press the "Make persistent" option to save any modifications so they remain on the camera at next cold boot 8. Please make sure you have the fastest possible SD card for Pro bitrate 4K recording (80Mbit to 160Mbit). Happy shooting!

It will certainly be pixel binned 4K like Fuji X-T20 and A7R II. When done well like on the A99 II it can look very nice. And Nikon's flat profile / colour / processing pipeline is very good. Hopefully they won't forget to put the Super 35mm 6K oversampled crop mode on there... HINT HINT! -
No shame in pixel binning if done right. The Sony A99 II does very detailed 120fps from a 42MP sensor! It has hardly any moire. Don't know what the RX100 IV and V do in 120fps but the quality is the same as the full pixel readout 1080p mode. A full pixel readout is still binned for 1080p... Just on the image processor, not the sensor.
