One ALL PURPOSE Lens for GH2

Hey guys,

It's great to have joined this community. I have a quick question for you guys.

I have recently upgraded from a GH1 to a GH2, and I've decided to get rid of a few so so lenses to get ONE GREAT lens. I will rent when I need other lenses. That being said, I was wondering if I could borrow from your expertise and experience to help me make this decision?

I have bought Andrew Reid's GH2 Shooter's Guide and it's a great help, but if I had to choose only one lens, and rent others, which would you recommend?

Thanks for your thoughts (in advance).

Cheers,
Pat

My vote is the Voigtlander 25mm F.95.

* 50mm field of view is wonderful - normal and capable in almost any situation (slightly boring but being creative with composition does help).

* F.95 - F2.0 and F4.0 are where I shoot it the most often but having F.95 is awesome "when you need it" - nothing else comes close.

* Amazing build quality and great manual focus throw

* Stunning close focusing, its not a macro lens but with the extended tele conversion it sure seems like it

* Nice bokeh - slightly tear dripish but solid none the less

* Very little distortion

* Will hold its value for a long time

If you can't afford the Voigtlander then the Panny 20mm F1.7 is a good option though I hate its 40mm focal length.

Cheers!

Another option:

I tried one of these this morning and was pleasantly surprised.

$499 Olympus 12-50mm

http://tiny.cc/7gbtb (3 part review - he covers macro, the wide, and the tele abilities of this lens)

While it isn't suitable for low light or shallow depth of field work - the focal range is great, the af motor was great (esp during video) and the macro was VERY good.

Something to consider if you are unsure of what focal length to start with.  This gives you all of them and you can go from there.

Cheers!

Hey guys,

I've recently purchased and read through Andrews GH2 guide. I am an editor myself and do audio out on shots, so I'm not knew to the world of video production. But I am knew to the world of video shot with a DSLR.
Either way, I have 3 wonderings:

1. Get the GH2 in the next 3 weeks or wait out for the GH3
2. I really like the look of the 12mm hyperprime and will want to pick up one of these when they become available (if ever!). But what is a good second lense. I dont plane on having more than 2 for a while, as I'd like to invest in a good tripod head and legs, and i'd like to get a pocket glide/dolly.
Any thoughts on the second lense? I'm thinking maybe a 35mm? (whats a good one around the $500ish mark
3. Should I be buying EF lenses for bullet proofing the future? Hate to buy lenses that I find cant be used in the future if full frame cameras dominate (as to quality) the micro 4/3rds market later on?

If you really want only one outstanding lens, if you have the money I'd go with the Olympus Zuiko 14-35mm f/2.0.
Or if you like longer focal lengths the Olympus Zuiko 35-100mm f/2.0. I don't have any experience with these lenses but ive read alot of good things about 'em.

For a lower budget there always is the trusty 14-140 by panasonic.

There are of course other options like a J15x9.5B4 9.5mm-143mm f1.8(no full coverage in wider focal lengths).

or a Canon C mount 17-102mm f2 (no full coverage around 85%).

but I don't know anything about these unusual lenses and I bet there are a lot more.

There still is the option to go with 2 lenses, even though this is against your principals.
I'd go with one zoom and one fast prime.
so you have one all purposes lens and one when you need the extra stops of light or the shallow dof (isnt that why we got into dslr's in the first place? ;p).

In one last note I'd suggest waiting for the X lenses before purchasing any lens.
