  1. Thanks for the responses. I just wanted to double check as I don't have possibility to test camera myself. Only had option to hold it in store and I couldn't take test footage but first contact was pleasurable. It was nicer to hold than Nikon Z6 and due to fantastic discounts now I started to think. I already returned two new Fuji X-S20 due to the manufacturing defects and I don't know if I want to stay with them if quality control is so bad. AF although better is still lacking especially in video.

My first question is not even a problem compared to Fuji which doesn't have any kind of tracking in video mode till this day. I have only tested new Sony models and if Panasonic is somehow closer to that kind of performance in stills / video then it's great for me.

Like @MrSMW mentioned for the price it's silly value and I think I will give it a go.

Honestly, why complicate your life... for family video take a Panasonic G9 MKII or a Sony 6700 for example... the AF will be almost perfect for you... that's the target: lighter, more stable, less expensive...

Just a thought and have a nice day

Reason why I am looking at S5 II is full frame sensor. Apart from video I shoot a lot of photos. I forgot to mention that I do quite a bit of indoor shooting too. After testing and comparing A7C for example I see difference in low light, tonal transitions and I like more DoF flexibility for portraits (especially whole body). Bodies you suggested are quite nice especially A6700 but I would rather go with A7C II. G9 II though is a no go for me due to that small sensor. Thanks for suggestions.

  3. Hi. Question to more experienced Panasonic S5II users. I have read about some AF and banding problems in this model and would like to figure out how much it could impact my real world usage of this camera.

I would like to use it for family stuff (two small kids), travel, street, landscape. I would mostly record in 4k 30p / 4k 60p in 10bit in some flat profile to do minor corrections afterwards. Maybe some V-log in the future if I find it easy enough.

    1. I've read that S5 II has problems with human detection / tracking when there is more than one person in the frame and it starts to jump even if we try to force it to track one particular person. Is there a way to somehow lock focusing on the selected person ? Or the only way is to disable human detection and revert to zone / single focus point ?

    2. If I would record in 10 bit in flat profile then how much I can be affected by banding in this situation ? Generally how easy is to get into banding issue or is it overblown and only affects users who push footage too hard ?

    3. Bonus question is how eye AF works in stills ? I don't have huge requirements. Lately I tested Fuji X-S20 with my old XF 35 f1.4 and mostly I was happy with eye AF apart from situation when my kids moved faster.

I would be grateful for some insights.

But to where?? Everything else is a compromise as well, just a different set of pros/cons.

That is true, but since I don't have high end video needs then it can be Panasonic S5 for me (at least good IBIS and AF not much worse in video and in stills it's actually better), A7 IV (great AF and ok IBIS) or maybe wait a little and see what Nikon Z6 III will look like (my guess is that it will be great). OM-1 is also fantastic (great size, lenses, AF and best IBIS but this sensor for stills gives me a pause though)

I am long enough with Fuji and I know that their AF and IBIS drive me crazy. Apart from that they are pretty much great. Colors, DR, ergonomics, fun factor, size with smaller primes, 4k120, rolling shutter, 1/32000 for stills and so on.

  5. I am sure that it will be a great camera for many but I am finally jumping ship from Fuji. After all those years they still can't fix their AF algorithm and their sticky IBIS and those two things are crucial for my run and gun photo/video fun.

I know we are now looking on preproduction tests but they won't fix those two big issues until camera is released and even down along when other models like X-T5 will hit the market. Fuji is now having some nice spec but I don't care about spec if AF and IBIS will constantly ruin my shots.

On top of this I would have to buy their bigger and expensive new LM glass to acheive somewhat usable AF and for this price and size you can get FF equivalents so size and price argument is also lost now with their APS-C in many cases.

Coming from Fuji myself (XT3), not as good.

For stills, no problemo…in fact there are several bonuses with stills for a camera having contrast detect.

But for video, with static subjects or side to side movement, pretty OK and yes, native Panny lenses have an edge over Sigma.

Reliable tracking forward or away from you. Forget it. Pretty crap.

It CAN do it, but you don’t get to decide when those times are.

Toss a coin up in the air and the probability of heads or tails is 50:50.

That’s S5/S1 tracking as things stand for you.

Thank you very much. I really hoped it would be better now. I looked at the video below and though that it's quite ok but video only shows couple of scenarios.

  7. Hi

I would like to ask how is the S5 autofocus nowadays in AF-C face/eye/subject tracking ? I am looking to jump ship from Fuji X-T4 and wondering if I will loose much in that department. Also wondering how much better the AF is with native lets say Panasonic 50 f1.8 compared to something like Sigma 65 f2 ?

I will not be using camera professionally, only hobby travel / family / kids stuff. Fuji is not ideal and I can see some pulsing especially when using eye / face tracking.

You can turn IBIS off but I believe you must also have your lens OIS off at the same time then. Or you can't have IBIS on with the (Fuji) lens OIS left off, or something. I avoid OIS lenses anyway so haven't tested myself.

When you say AF is good with the speedbooster, what type do you mean? Stills? With these adapters people seem to usually just mean this and then forget to add "oh but of course the AF-C is unusable" when asked about video AF

I'm still very disappointed in the IBIS with this camera, especially after the update, and I see people are similarly finding the Exposure "fix" update to be flawed too. I think Fuji has a strategy of releasing firmware updates that purport to address a known issue with the camera, not really actually succeed in fixing said issue, and then just hope the general (misinformed) public awareness of "oh but I heard they fixed that in an update now so it's all good!" spreads enough to keep the sales coming, and the "Fuji cares about its customer base because look at all the firmware fixes" semi-myth continues.

I am a Fuji user and can confirm. That's how it is with Fuji for now. It seems that they don't know how to fix AF and exposure stepping in auto iso. Exposure stepping is now little better but still not solved and in AF department they are moving backwards compared to X-T3. I wonder if they will finally figure out tracking in video in X-H2. Lack of MK II versions of f1.4 / f1.2 primes is also annoying and for now Fuji is not going to do anything about this. The worst thing is that when X-H2 will hit the market then X-T4 will be left behind with broken AF system.
Like I said before it's a wonderful system for full manual work : manual af and exposure. Then results are great.

  9. Thank you @SteveV4D and @Daai for the video sample. IBIS seems to have similar problems as Fuji and it over corrects movements, but will wait for final firmware and proper tests when it comes out. Rolling shutter seems ok in 4k60p. Autofocus is little jumpy but that probably can be corrected in the settings i guess. Overall looks good and I have high hopes for this as I will probably choose R6 over X-T4 which has some serious problems with AF and auto exposure.

  10. I am really confused. Can someone please tell me what is the cripple hammer for 4k60p on R6 ? It seems that AF is fully working now (not like in 1Dx Mark III) right ? So is there crop, binning or sever rolling shutter going on ? As rumors say ALL-I will be added so that's good. Will it be better option than X-T4 for run and gun with auto focus or are there some serious downsides that I am not seeing ?

    That's a pretty interesting finding.

    The NX1 is way smoother.

I just don't get it why Fuji still didn't fix that horrible exposure stepping. It's not a deal breaker but when I want to shoot for fun during my holiday with family it would be useful to have good working auto iso without those steps in exposure. I also see some AF pulsing in some tests like in Panasonic system. Even with lens such as 16-55 f2.8 and I am wondering how is that possible.

  12. Max stated already couple of times that he uses default camera settings to show users what you get straight out of camera without any fiddling with settings. Unfortunately many if not most of Z6 videos on the web are using standard profile with this horrible over sharpening.  Fuji X-T4 would be perfect but for me this AF pulsing and harsh exposure stepping in auto ISO are deal breakers.

I know most of the people posting here do this for a living and 30p is probably the standard. I do this because I love it, and have a family with two teenagers that give me a run & gun challenge all the time.  But now that I've seen 4k60 versus 4k30 with the X-T3, I won't go with less than 4k60. And Canon, Nikon, and Sony don't have it for anywheres near the Fuji's price. The Panasonic GH5 is close, and the Pocket Cinema camera is just too specialized. This will change in the near future of course. I'm waiting to see what the Fuji X-H2 will do.

I am also no proffesional but I love taking family videos during travel. X-T3 is almost perfect but like I said exposure stepping, not perfect AF due to lack of subject tracking and some focus hunting, no custom banks for fast switch between photo / video and lack of IBIS (I don't want to always put camera on a gimbal). All those things caused that instead of spending time with family I was constantly fiddlind with gimbal, exposure settings and AF but results were great. Fuji gives great filmic look in my opinion with not much post processing.

I also looked at GH5 or even G9 but the biggest problem is AF. CDAF can pulsate like crazy on the backround and M43 is not perfect for photos. Due to all this I gave up with 4k60 idea and then I am left with Sony A7III with worse 1080p, some moire, bad colors, not perfect white balance and not so good IBIS and with Nikon Z6 which in my opinion gives a sweet spot. Good IBIS, smooth AF although this focusing system is not as polished as Sonys, good colors but the system can be pretty bulky compared to the others. My mind is now blown as I don't know what to choose. Searching for perfect photo/video hybrid leads to serious analysis paralysis.

Yeah auto exposure doesn't look pretty. I've never used auto exposure in my life though. I can see it being useful for a indoor to outdoor shot or something. I suppose it could be useful for event work.

The S1H tops the XT3 but its way more expensive. The S1 is nice too but its 8 bit 4k 60p and not even full frame.

It's a real pitty. I am looking for a camera with smooth auto iso and smooth af for run and gun video on gimbal during travel. I already done such run and gun with my current X-E3 but setting manual exposure all the time during travel with my family is getting cumbersome. AF also ruined couple of shots due to pulsing and was also cumbersome due to lack of subject tracking. Panasonic S1 is too big and to expensive. Sony is good for auto iso and af but their colors are meh. It seems like Nikon Z6 or maybe Z50 will do the job for me in this particular use scenario.

  15. Hi

Can anybody please help me with one question. I have read couple of threads and I get different opinions on this. Did Fuji X-T3 / X-T30 finally fixed their Auto ISO stepping exposure problem ? I mean when I film with fixed aperture and ss and have auto iso set...do exposure transitions look smooth or is there still this stepping behaviour ?

  16. I was hoping for Canon to bring something good but nope. Sony A6600 has weak 1080p which is a dealbreaker. Fuji x-t30 has some heat issues and no real object tracking so it's not perfect for family travel gimbal setup, also slow focusing f1.4 lenses. Now I am wondering if to move to Sony A7 III or to Nikon Z6. Any suggestions which is better for gimbal setup with AF ?
