Vloggers could care less about 4k - there are so many tangible benefits to having 1080p in a format where image is not king. Not least of which is having a computer and editing system to edit the video smoothly and not having to spending hours rendering, etc. The only people that care are people like us on the forums. But this camera ISNT made for us - it is targeted at vloggers, hence giving PM the first review. So saying that it isn't an entry level camera because it will set you back $900 takes you nowhere. The correct way of looking at it is identifying their target market, and then placing it against its competitors in that market. I don't see any camera that beats this for 1080p imagery in the vlog sphere. Other cameras will come in bigger bodies hopefully with better features - we just have to be patient. Otherwise, you can always get the a6500 with it unviewable backscreen in 4k.

Lot of good that does on a gimbal. In any event the specs have dropped and looks like no dpaf in 4k and 1.6 crop factor. Like I said, this camera is tiny and I didn't expect too much at that price. I am excited for the m5 mark ii when that comes out to see what they got. Just a shame about the autofocus makes this camera basically useless for its intended purpose.

That's why I said let's wait and see what they do with their ff mirroless as this format lends itself more to the hybrid shooter (mirrorless, that is). If they are going to give us proper video it should be in mirroless camera with all the benefits that come from that and in a larger camera. Hardware limitations are the sole reason, I would argue, for any compromise in this camera. It seems you have to make compromises somewhere at this form factor - the a6500 choose to make their compromise an unviewable monitor at 4k, and I think that is the wrong decision. The camera is no use if you can't see what is being shot.

Exactly what I am saying. The GH5 is a huge camera and it needs to be - and that's with a m43 sensor. But you already have people complaining on here that the m50 will be crippled cause such and such reason and they don't even mention the size limitations, which size was put in place specifically for the vlogging crowd. Everyone on here will have to wait for the ff mirroless, if any, to see what canon are really holding back/giving. In the end this camera will be far better than the a6500 cause you will actually be able to see what you are shooting in bright daylight and the colors will be a heck of a lot better and it will be far, far cheaper.

Literally everyone on here saying that canon will intentionally cripple the camera (which they might), but there is only so much you can get out of a small-bodied camera for 4k video. Firstly, don't you find it interesting that the only companies able to achieve this feat are micro four thirds companies. Of course it has to do with sensor size. From memory, the NX500 had a dramatic crop in 4k mode. I think modern aps-c cameras are getting to this point and canon will only enter the market if the camera will do what they intend it to do. But in this case it will be more of a hardware limitation than intentional crippling.

The camera is very small. It won't be able to handle heavy processing. That's a fact. You can't expect too much from a small body. Look at the overheating with the a6500 and this is smaller than that. So don't expect anything fantastic from this camera. It just isn't possible with the size. It's clearly aimed at vloggers for which it's likely crippled codec will be sufficient. The size and price range all point this direction. And you have to consider the compromises the a6500 has when shooting 4k. If you are outside in bright daylight you can't see the LCD. Hence why the SmallHD focus is so popular. That's a large added expense. Canon have never had this problem. Their lcds are fantastic and all are viewable in bright daylight. They do things right even though they are late to market. The camera has to be useable first. If that means they have to compromise on the codec or cropping to get a small form factor 4k camera then so be it. But don't see why people are expecting anything else. The form factor is too small. This won't hurt gh5 sales but it should kill the a6500 et al. I owned the a6500 and sold it purely based on ergonomics and the above issues. Image differences will be based more on the user than camera, so I want something that feels good and actually works.

I've found my perfect camera. It took me ten long years of searching but I finally found the one. She may not be perfect to others but she is perfect for me. So don't give up hope she is out there for you! By the by I really like the raw grittiness of the image coming out of the Fuji - see the video I posted above. I think it is unique in this respect. For some reason Im interested in seeing what photographers and nonpros can get out of the camera. There is something natural and organic to the shooting style that suits the camera. It isn't suited to a more commercial polished looks like the gh5 series. Fuji cameras have personality that's why I like them. That's saying something for a mass produced product.

HDR is for raw HDMI out. Don't think we are getting that for video lol. The 4k timelapse mode is another indication that this is targeted firmly at the vloggers and is a nice feature. What I like about canon is how easy there cameras are to use - they may be late to the party but when their products arrive you know they will work properly and do the job.

It looks to be everything a YouTuber could want/need. I think this thing will be tremendous on a light gimbal. I wonder how good the new autofocus is. It is an intriguing prospect. I wouldn't say it is just for begginers if they get the codec right.

I was in the japan recently and all the chinese tourists there were big on sony - I saw more sony cameras than I did canon. Can't say too much about the japanese as they weren't the tourists, but even where I am from sony has a big following with the chinese. Just read the M50 is not a m5 replacement. It will also be available in black and WHITE (I think we all know what this means). It will probably have highly compromised video specs. I think we will need to wait for the new iteration of the m5 with this processor to see what they will be willing to give us.

My mistake - I havent looked at their mirroless cameras in a bit (rightly so). I remember the m5 having decent stabilization; I incorrectly assumed it was ibis. It will still sell well but the points raised are valid. I think the color science in their cinema range (all the way from the c100) is leagues ahead of their dslr range. The colors in the dslr's are overyhyped. Fuji can be a lot more cinematic. The Gh5s also looks good (they have improved a lot since the days of the GH4). I have known industry professionals who have relied on dpaf in their professional work so i would say it is the standard. It is a deciding factor for many people at the very least, I think we can both agree.

lol 15fps - 8mm anyone?? I personally don't understand the pessimism. Their mirror less cameras generally have ibis if I am not mistaken and the new ones have dpaf. Clog will not be in the camera but the great colour, autofocus, ibis, small package (perfect for gimbal work), and perhaps rotating screen should be more than enough to compensate. Plus no overheating and no crappy ergonomics. I don't expect much from the codec and it will probably have a crop factor but it will still sell well as the images should be close enough to the competitors where the actual tools given, like autofocus and ibis, will have more impact in the overall image than having h.264. Having this on a gimbal would be a dream. And I am sure an in post log workflow will be developed. The just need to make sure the 4k is acceptable, not like the mush 1080p in the m5. It could be the first camera with great ibis and industry standard autofocus (in 4k). I'd say it sells well

meh, all they had to do was come to the party and they would dominate - has flip out screen, 4k, autofocus, great colors, ibis. 4k may be a bit soft and it could have a crop but that won't stop many from buying it as the other features alone put it above the competition. And this is not even their flagship mirrorless, so I am expecting future releases to be even better. Just like that they should dominate again, and thank god - had enough of seeing those awful sony colors around.

Ye, that looks good. It may well be the profile, you are right. But the motion is alos nicer and it has a nice creamy look to it (maybe from the lens?). I know the 35 1.4 is meant to have quite a bit of character.

I agree with this. I said it before and was attacked. It is hard grading anything to a professional standard that isn't shot in raw, or close to it. The codec is too weak even in the gh5 for a professional production that requires any kind of heavy duty grading or keying. That's not to say you can't shoot cinema on a gh5 but it wouldnt be most people's first choice as the footage isn't cinematic, and the Fuji in my eyes less so. For productions that require a more digital look and less severe grading and keying it does fine and is a great camera with a robust codec and a good look. The industry standard is the Alexa and that's an expensive camera. If you are shooting digital that is more often than not what you are using if you are doing a serious narrative (see recent article on cameras used in Sundance). That's not to say other cameras can't be used but I think the Alexa most correctly emulates the look of film. That's why I think canon strikes a nice balance so far for cameras that can be used at the next step down; that is, if they get 4k into their mirrorless range. The Fuji misses the mark on the autofocus and he IQ isn't quite as good as the canons its gh5s IMO.

Vlogging implies a greater degree of movement which generally would benefit from a fully articulating screen so you can compose your shot on the fly wherever you are.

I love fuji and am biased in their favour. I had my cash ready excited to preorder this camera, but I just can't do it. For me, these more consumer cameras are good for getting a good image quickly in scenarios where you don't get a second take and where using my cinema camera would be impractical. If you are going to do long set-up times and many takes, then a cinema camera is better for that type of work. Those are my criteria, yours may be different, so my judgment is based only these factors: can it take a quick shot? does it have good iq? For me, it has good ergonomics and ibis, both ticks, but it is missing one crucial factor, and that is good face detect autofocus. What I am hearing from the videos is that it works on occasion. Even if it was at the level of the a6500 I would be fine with that as the ibis implementation is very good. But it seems to me a step behind the a6500. I just don't know at this stage if I can rely on it to get the image. I may be proven wrong but this is a consideration for me. The second issue I have is with the image quality. Don't get me wrong the colours are great - it's the other factors that have me miffed. Firstly, there appears to be a great degree of digital sharpness that makes the images look videoy. I note the diffusion they used in the professional japanese production to limit this effect. Moreover, the motion cadence is just off and it may have to do, like Andrew said, with the omission of the ALL-I codec. It doesn't look natural to me like for instance a canon or gh5. So I have decided to pass in this instance and see what canon has in store with their new mirrorless which if the rumours are true shall be 4k, will have ibis and will have autofcus face detect - the holy trinity. And nice colour science that you won't need to grade too much with the crappy 8bit codec they will no doubt give you. I don't mind the eos-m mount as the ef lenses are easily adapted.
