  1. You got to remember though that the early eos cinema cameras were 8 bit and clog was fine for them. Being 4k will be an advantage in this respect too. I don't see too much of an issue. It's not like you have to do a lot of grading like with the sony's to get a half decent image.
  2. Price is 400 usd for the variable nd filter. Expensive.
  3. "The ND Slot EF Adapter is very interesting and will be particularly useful for us as video and time-lapse shooters. The ND slot has options for a variable ND filter or a polarizer. We tested the Variable ND Filter shooting a time-lapse and slowly turned the ND wheel while the sun went down in order to maintain a correct exposure. This is a lot easier than trying to adjust aperture, shutter speed or ISO between exposures on the camera itself. Using the variable ND for video is also a killer feature. It means you don’t need to swap variable ND filters between multiple EF lenses (or buy multiple ND’s for all lenses) as it all happens on the adapter itself. The ND Range is ND3–ND500 or the equivalent to 1.5–9 stops. This Is a massive range and will work great for video as it can go all the way down to 1.5 and equally good at 9 stops for shooting long exposures. The option to drop in a polarizer is also super handy. " This is where they set themselves apart for me. You add autofucs with this and what more do you need. Iam just not clear if it is internal clog? Answering myself - clog is internal.
  4. I'm getting one too. NDs are tough to pass up. The touch bar looks fantastic too. I like the ergos a lot and you can tell they put a lot of thought into the video side. Mind you I don't need 4k 60p. If I did I'd be waiting for Pana.
  5. He says in the video the IS is better because the lens works with the body - combination IS. What does this mean technically speaking?
  6. The drop in variable neutral density (ND) filter allows density to be controlled from ND3 – ND500 which is equivalent to 1.5 – 9 f-stops. Nice.
  7. yes this does seem to indicate some kind of 4k pixel binning situation with a crop mode with efs glass.
  8. The focus pull at the end is creamy, and no breathing. Looks super nice. Much to recommend this camera.
  9. No ibis though. It will live and die by the video autofocus. Remains to be seen if they can improve their implementation.
  10. In practical terms, if you have a 16-35, or anything relatively wide, will it really mean that much to you? Perhaps. My point is that most people won't know the difference/care. The other considerations are in my view more important. I think we are in agreement in that if you are seeking an Eos R you shouldn't be expecting cinematic results, but where we disagree is that I include the mirroless cameras in your list (sony, pana, fuji, etc) in the same category (excluding blackmagic). People interested in mirroless cameras in my view are, or should be, more interested in the advances that canon has made than the specs that sony gives you, and I think the market will react accordingly. Your article presents a valid point but I have to disagree having seen these cameras perform on the big screen (not the nx1, granted). I appreciate this is a difference in opinion, but the differences in IQ between the C300 and the mirroless cameras were pretty stark to me, notwithstanding any resolution deficiencies the c300 may have. If i was doing production or film work I would choose the c300 all day long over a as7iii or nx1 - so where does this leave them (nx1 and a7siii) in the market? Seems pretty niche to me. My main point is that if you are going to be doing work with a mirrorless camera, then of necessity that work really shouldn't require the kinds of advances that sony has made; the advances canon has made are much more relevant. The perfect example is clog and slog and the respective expertise required to grade these log profiles. The usability and ergonomics and time spent in post are all more important. For the kinds of things that most people will be using these for, autofocus and flippy screen might be the most important yet. This doesn't excuse canon, but I think they know their market better than anyone here.
  11. I agree with that. All I'm saying is that canon is not so bad as others seem to be claiming. In terms of what it is capable of being used for, and what it should be used for, I still think it is the best product on the market. That's my perception, and those around me, who had the luxury of seeing various cameras projected onto the big screen, including mirroless cameras (5d mark iv and as7ii). You can disagree with me, I don't mind, nor will all those people purchasing this camera.
  12. Really you just have to look how many comments there are on dpreview for this one rumour to realise how popular this thing will be. People don't seem to realise that though this camera may not be the best option for a very niche set of people, if it is priced well, it will be seen as the be all and end all for the majority of people (including vloggers) who are the largest subset of sales. 10bit and no crop is only important to a minority of people. The truth is that the flippy screen, autofocus, color, ergos and touch interface is a lot more important for your run of the mill consumer. Canon knows what's important to the majority of the people. I used to own a 200d (base model dslr) and a a6500. The 200d had a magnificent touch interface like a smartphone. The a6500 felt like it was from the 80s using the interface. Same goes with fuji. For a beginner to intermediate that's what's important, not 10 bit, no crop. I think canon's strategy is correct in that if you truly want good image quality out of a camera you should get a dedicated video camera. Despite everything sony gives you, the image is quite poor when compared to professional cinema cameras (heck, even the pocket cinema camera). I know, I have seen it projected multiple times on the big screen. What people fail to mention is that yes you may have 4k but the motion cadence, color and highlight roll-off is horrendous. The motion cadence in particular you can't get a feel of until you see it projected. The c300 at 1080p to this date still looks better and you will be able to get it cheaper than a new a7siii. Even if you are doing docs or small productions, the c300 is still better owing to ergonomics. If you need something small, this canon mirrorless is good enough given the ease of use it will afford you. I think canon are still the innovators where it matters.
  13. AF looks bang on. The IBIS in the video above looked good as well. I get that Sony footage can be massaged to look ok, but just straight out the colours here are looking great in pretty harsh conditions.
  14. Great color and skintones. Can't get that with Sony. Autofocus looks good too. Nice and smooth.
  15. The codec looks great you are right. Image should be mint. Not so bugged about 120 at 1080p. It might have clog as a paid upgrade? Or maybe not on spec list? I will reserve my judgmrnt until confirmed. However we do know we have a great codec, dpaf and drop in nds ? at 4k (need confirmation if cropped). Ibis not critical with good lens IS. Camera will be small enough to put on a gimbal.
  16. I think the fact they have included a pl adaptor pretty well expresses their intentions with respect to video. It is about as good an indication that this thing will have good 4k and some form of log profile. They wouldnt sell a pl adaptor if they didn't think the camera would be of significant interest to videographers. Notwithstanding canons history I think there is some reason to be hopeful with this release. Truth be told the flippy screen alone guarantees this thing will sell well.
  17. Mmmmm that movie record button. Such nice ergos.
  18. Nd adaptor is a gamechanger any way you look at it. I know heaps of people have been asking for it, and if they have delivered i see a lot of people switching from sony, even if the a7siii gets 10 bit 60p. You get 4k dual pixel full frame with ibis and canon color (clog doesnt need 10bit) and NDs
  19. Are we sure it isn't the other way around? I don't see if it is 44mm like the ef why even create a new mount? Why not just use Ef lenses?
  20. Nokoshita leaks lens lineups: EOS R body EOS R 24105 kit RF 35 mm F 1.8 M IS RF 50 mm F 1.2 L USM RF 28 – 70 mm F 2 L USM RF 24 – 105 mm F4 L USM M adapter R wow
  21. Then stay with the pocket This looks pretty high-end to me. The color is certainly better than the Panasonic variants of this sensor. I am actually quite impressed. Given the price, so far the images more than match some of the higher end cameras, unless you are being extremely picky (looking for details in extreme shadows), which to me is nonsense.
  22. I think it definitely has more dr. I disagree with the comparisons but still early days need to see more footage. Looks good though.
