  1. I have the Canon, have had it since the first M (1). I would wait. I think it shows that Canon can do a great job with these things, just now needed in a bit more ‘enthusuast’ body. But Canon - Fix your customisation, it’s appalling!
  2. Both are pretty reasonable in 1080p modes. Pretty serviceable with no major headaches. To unlock the best 1080p you need to record to the external recorder using the 4K mode on the 5D IV with 1080p output. The 5D IV has bad rolling shutter in 4K mode as a result, but it can be worked around and overall not 'that' bad. Quite similar to the 1DC really. The M50 has horrendous rolling shutter in 4K mode. Just unusable. Even with an IS lens and keeping things really still. On the plus side both have vastly improved 1080p over previous Canon's. In fact the M50 is possibly better than the 5D IV. Well instead of focussing on what was awful about it (and still is) i.e. the really bad controls, rolling shutter in 4K, crop in 4K (though that's useful at times in theory), terrible build quality, bad range of AF modes, poor battery life, really poor customisation to try and fix some of these issues and so on. Instead been just using it for what I intended to use it for. It has lovely image quality, both for video and stills. Works really well with adapted lenses, great with the Sigma APS-C zooms (I use both the 17-50 OS HSM and 50-150 OS HSM f/2.8's and the f/1.8 18-35 and 50-100) as well as the enormous Art primes (which are partly silly but because they work so great and produces such nice images still really useful). It's also built cheap and fiddly because it is both light and small. It does a great job of both, while still having excellent AF and decent speed and quality all round. Plus while the controls are poor, it is quite good at being a happy snap machine, which is actually what I wanted it for. The face tracking and AF and great colour and all that do work well, making it perfect for that purpose. As does the Wifi implementation etc. I prefer it with the Sigma f/1.8 zooms to the Sony A7 III with f/2.8 zooms generally. One lens I am really interested in is the Samyang 85mm f/1.4 AF as it is so stocky and light compared to most 85mm f/1.4s - Actually seems like a good compliment. Me too! Can't wait to see what the next gen looks like. I really hope they bring some of that G1X III into the M5 II, that would be pretty amazing! That plus the OS and CPU and other updates of the M50, along with a new sensor that can do decent 4K subsampling straight off the sensor would become an absolutely killer pocket cam IMO.
  3. I ended up getting the 5D IV. I can confirm that it does lovely 1080p out of the HDMI using the 4K mode much like the 1DC does. It is actually a really fantastic camera and the crop 'feels' just like normal S35. The AF is fantastic. The image is lovely. There are lots of improvements all round (and some not so great rolling shutter). Also love that I can record the massive internal 4K files to SD card, unlike the 1DC. Will mean I'm more likely to also use the 4K internal. Need to get real C-Log on there ASAP though to really get the most out of it though, which is annoyingly a trip to Canon. Loving the DPAF and 1080p on this and the M50. Actually the latter is growing on me.
  4. Sure! Not aggressive, I don't feel that having robust discussions is aggressive. Sorry if it comes off as such. I do get where you're coming from though. There are certainly many nice elements to these cameras and I know at some point I will probably (knowing me) end up owning one. I kind of don't get why every discussion on every forum about every release or product or feature has to devolve into a slinging match against Sony (in particular) and I REALLY dislike throw away 'universally known truths' such as how much better the ergonomics will definitely be just because it has a particular brand on it. Or how as soon as Nikon (or Canon) take mirrorless 'seriously' they can 'crush' Sony. I don't particularly love or even like Sony gear. But I really dislike BS. Well that's an interesting question. First up, I doubt Canon users will buy the Nikon - The Nikon can't use their lenses, the Sony can. Also according to Sony, their market growth isn't coming from Canon / Nikon, it is coming from new buyers completely. They are actually building the market, rather than trying to poach users (although that still happens). I wonder if those new users would suddenly switch over and buy a Nikon instead... I tend to doubt it. Will people who are now heavily invested in the Sony system switch to Nikon? Probably not in great numbers. It probably already cost them a lot to switch and the Nikon offers little in the way of any substantial change, not in the same way that mirrorless offered those switchers over DSLR (right or wrong is not my point, but there was purpose there). Especially once the dust settles and people get a better and more balanced understanding of these and less marketing (or fanboy) hype. So I guess no, I don't think we are going to see mass switching nor mass new customers. Which means really only Nikon faithful will be really fronting up for these. That may change later. I don't think Canon's new mirrorless will be anything different either. But both will reduce the flow of people to mirrorless-only brands like Sony, Fuji and m43's, I do wonder what effect having nothing below the Z6 for mirrorless will affect uptake.
  5. Couldn't agree more. Just needs a reality check. I also really loathe throw away comments of assumption. What do they say about assumptions? The cameras look pretty ok. Good to see there is another product on the market. Let's hope Nikon don't ditch it because it's not going so well like so many of their other products. It might end up being really exciting. But to me personally it's pretty useless without an EF adapter or AF adapter for M-Mount lenses. I have zero interest in the 3 native lenses.
  6. I can't speak for Jon, but I find it somewhat frustrating as a user of most all systems (and care little of brand) just how much the status quo for ALL other brands fanboys will bash Sony and only Sony. Put it this way, if you are a Fuji, Oly, Panasonic, Canon, Ricoh, Nikon or Canon fanboy who do you bash? Sony. Most often with poorly understood or researched 'facts' that you read or heard somewhere on the internet. I find those kinds of arguments super annoying. Sony are far from perfect, but nobody is. Why they cop the majority of fanboy rage I have no idea, I guess in every segment they are the biggest threat to the status quo. Probably a number of reasons: 1. Always be aware of manufacturer claims. I doubt they've been working specifically on this project as long as they claim. Little facts suggest otherwise. 2. Believe it or not, Nikon aren't automatically capable of 'crushing' Sony just because they are Nikon. Sony have WAY more experience in this field. A lot of this stuff stems from video too, which again Sony has much more experience in. Every good Nikon (and Oly and Canon etc) fanboy seems to think that as soon as Nikon took mirrorless 'seriously' they would have an undeniably better camera right off the bat. This is simply not true. They've given it a really good bash, but it's not perfect. Canon can't magically do that either. Tin foil hat anyone? I like how now that the Nikon reality is starting to kick in and we realise that they can't just 'crush' Sony whenever they want, that suddenly it must be Sony's fault the camera isn't as good. Smart. How about this: Cameras are complex pieces of technology. Yes technology. Always have been. This stuff requires a lot of testing and R&D and improving and feedback etc. Plus they have to look at the market and somehow predict the future (they need features for the next model or higher models etc). Then you need the tech and the team etc behind it. Plus all this has to be done in secret and so on. Basically it's hard. It takes time and money and resources which are finite. Nikon made a really good camera by all accounts. As a first effort it seems pretty decent chock full of Sony tech and Nikon 'style' for whatever that is worth. Looks like it should be quite popular among the Nikon enthusiasts.
  7. Absolutely. I routinely got 1500+ shots off my A7S back in the day (while also using LAEA adapter) off that FW50 battery. This occurred when shooting continuously over a period of a couple hours. Turning on and off shooting bits and pieces though and the battery life was pretty average. Still people would always point at the CIPA figures for Sony (around 300 shots) and say that was the most they could muster, while also providing their own anecdotes on how long their DSLR would shoot for (not considering during live view, because that would ruin their already very strong and valid argument). I think people need to get a clue. CIPA figures are not gospel. They are how a camera performs under one set of usage. Different usage, different figures. BUT it does give us a benchmark on which to judge (but every case must come from the CIPA figures, not their own experience). Given that, the Zs will get around the same battery as the original series A7s. Blackmagic are an Australian company. So are Atomos. I've been trying so hard ? But seriously, I think the hype machine is working on overdrive on these cameras. There have been a few voices saying 'hey, maybe not so much'. It's also practically impossible for the cameras to be BAD. I just find the hype very frustrating indeed. Fanboyism is even worse! Not surprised by any of these things. All cameras suffer in low light. Really good mirrorless are no worse than really good DSLRs, maybe even better. I thought that Nikon don't copy... Oh wait no you meant they don't copy Sony (because you don't like Sony and therefore find it offensive to even consider that Nikon would copy them, despite the fact that that whole product line is a direct copy and is being launch because of Sony). Legit. Bahahahaha! So long as that isn't Sony amiright?! ? Why would you have to enable low light AF? This sounds ridiculous. There must be some major downside to having it enabled? Perhaps this camera's slow burst rate and buffer are affected even further? It isn't. But he doesn't want to say they copied Sony, or borrowed Sony's tech, because he can't stomach the idea.
  8. And in the Sony you're getting dual card slots, internal S-Log without the need for external recorders, powerfully advanced custom picture profiles, high res capture, much better battery life, a much greater range of (and including professional) native lenses... I mean the last two of those things on the list is what you Nikon fanboys claimed have been the advantage of Nikon since Sony mirrorless started. Are they suddenly not important any more because they are Nikon 'flaws' rather than Sony ones? Indeed, you should. WOW REALLY?! You can use the $250 adapter to use your $400 manual focus lens on their $3400 camera?! Amazing! Too bad you've equally been able to do that on the Sony's since the first A7, which are only like $700 and a $10 adapter. But props for Nikon finally having something you can do that with. They are really 'innovating' there Bahahah I love how this one test has become the 'known facts of the universe' regarding weather resistance. Honestly NONE of the manufactures offer any true standard of water resistance that they are prepared to stand by. Not one. Therefore I consider them all to be garbage. Saying that, my house doesn't have extensive gaskets to 'seal it' yet rain never gets in. Funny that. True that. But apparently neither is the Nikon. Personally I'd take the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 over either of them, rubber seals and all. Only problem is, it's not available for Nikon Z and they aren't opening them mount. Haven't Nikon claimed for forever (and therefore their fanboys too) that optical IS is SO much better than IBIS? Just checking that I haven't been imagining that. Seems the Nikon IBIS is pretty first gen too. The Sony OSS works alongside the IBIS, so there is added benefit to having both. Still would get that Tamron though... Ironic given that to you Nikon > Sony no matter what. Yet it is only offensive one way? Sounds like they have included N-Log as one of their baked in LUTs. Surely you'll just be able to upload one to the BM also. Everyone claims how 'perfect' Canon is with adapted lenses, but I've got them and perfect is not the descriptor I would use. Sony do too. Just less people cared about the Sony lenses. In fact Sony were more proactive in supporting their legacy lenses than Nikon have been. But we won't say that with the fanboys around.
  9. I have both, they each have advantages. Probably go with the Ninja V though. Anything that can record a HDMI feed can 'do' N-Log. Flawlessly I would highly doubt. Well enough for most users - probably. However I would argue that most people seem to dislike adapting lenses or the idea of adapting them. That has certainly been the feedback around Sonys and their ability to adapt lenses. The native line is certainly lacking.
  10. Sony at least had 5 lenses at lunch and the 16-35mm f/4 very shortly after. That included a 70-200/4 as well as two standard zooms plus the 35 and 55. But people absolutely sulked constantly about the lens lineup. You would think Nikon would have learned from Sony’s mistakes, I mean that’s the whole point of hanging back right?
  11. Ah yes, the ultimate comeback. Fanboys with panties in a bunch. How about fanboys where the penny hasn't dropped that this is at best a Sony clone. I thought Nikon was a great innovator? Where is it? I though Nikon were so much better for pros? Where are the dual slots? I thought they had so much better ergonomics because they don't make 'toys', yet no one can actually point to them? Shouldn't they have a CLEAR physical advantage that users can point to? Not some ineffable 'oh but Nikon...' These cameras look fine, nothing more. There is nothing new, at all, about them. Other than it's a mirrorless Nikon that doesn't have a piddly 1" sensor in it. That's not innovation. Sorry what are you selling here? Some marketing fluff. Goodo. Now I know that Nikon wants you think the EVF is their own. Excellent. How is magnification sharp? That doesn't even make sense. Feel of an optical viewfinder? So when Sony had the exact same viewfinder on the A9 nearly 2 years ago and all the Nikon fanboys claimed that EVFs were rubbish and nothing like their (relatively speaking: poor) OVFs are going to now claim they are so magical? I find it ironic that Nikon talked about their innovation and 100 years of experience in their teaser videos and started with a shot of their S series (abandoned mount, but Nikon don't do that kind of thing which was a clone of the Contax rangefinders. Now their experience and innovation and they're launching a Sony clone. I guess that's just their way...
  12. More gaskets I guess most people usually think is better, so give them that one. The EVF is a Sony EVF, made by Sony, used in the Sonys. Don't see how that makes the Nikon better? What's the magnification of the Nikon? I'm sure Nikon fanboys will write a love letter about how Nikon are really the design masterminds behind them, but realistically they are Sony, just like the sensor. Sony has two top custom buttons which I would argue are more useful. I almost never use the front buttons on any camera I've owned with them. Sony has dedicated ISO wheel. Sony wins. They look the same. Unless you're talking about the bell end bit, which is bigger but hardly constitutes a bigger / better grip (considering you don't actually hold onto that bit). My Canons have these and are almost exclusively useless. Pretty sure any button can be a menus button on the Sony. Is a right-hand menu button more ergonomically correct than a right-hand play button? Not so sure. Seems like a swap the is more or less for the sake of it. I still don't see the main difference ergonomically. Or even any meaningful advantage. Build wise maybe, haven't held it in my hand. I've never felt the Nikons in general to be anything to write home about build wise, I actually think they feel quite cheap. Chunky. Many people seem to like that and equate it to 'good'. Again I am sure a bunch of fanboys will explain how non-toy like the Nikon automatically is... because Nikon. Ugh! Another throw away phrase that is overused and misunderstood. Nikon have ZERO experience Log or even REC.709 etc. Pleasing (to some) Nikon colours is what it should be credited for at best. I bought a 5D IV knowing full well this was coming. It's release has had zero impact. According to DPR: "Up to 100Mbps H.264 8-bit internal video capture"
  13. I completely agree. Basically Nikon have released a 'me-too' product of a replica of what is eating their lunch. Not such a bad choice really, in that it will stem the tide of defectors. I just get somewhat annoyed about the implication that because it is Nikon it is therefore automatically much improved in areas such as ergonomics. Both Canon and Nikon have now essentially copied the Sony design and yet Sony is still panned as being 'universally known to be terrible'... If they are so terrible, why are the big two outright copying them? Wait so the much touted Noct 58mm f/0.95 is manual focus only???!
  14. Agreed. And this is important to me. But I can't help but feel that there is a sentiment that it will automatically be better because Sony = Sucks and Nikon = Ace! BUT the thing is people have been comparing the ergonomics of much larger cameras. It is difficult to make space or volume while also making things small. What about them in particular look better? Or better for bigger hands. They don't look any less cramped to me. They don't look any bigger to me. In fact I feel the buttons are more cramped (such as at the rear right hand bottom of the camera four buttons crammed right next to each other - Probably the worst place for thumbs to try and reach). That's fine and each person is different. Not saying the A7 III's controls are a shining beacon of amazingness (they aren't) but that the Nikon's don't look any better (but seemingly are assumed to be). Do you mean the front and rear control dials? Aren't they essentially in exactly the same place as the Sony's? What about them is an improvement? There are some nice touches, but it looks for the most part to being close enough to offer no real improvement. One of the major ergonomic differences that I see is that the Z6/7 are missing two control dials that the Sony's have. Instead they have two buttons on the top plate (the best access other than the rear top) to access the features that are on dials. However this means those buttons have to be used for that purpose, where the Sony's have two additional buttons. Then the Nikon has the two on the front plate next to the mount as a result. TL;DR - The Sony has ore dials, the Nikon more buttons. Some other observations: - The grip area is essentially identical - Overall the main controls are essentially the same - The Nikon does have a bit wider gap between grip and mount, which does look like a small improvement - The Nikon dials are different front and back, the rear coming from the D5500. I would prefer that they were the same (and see no advantage in their difference). - I presume the 4-way navigator on the Nikon is programmable like the Sony, but is unclear at this point. - The A9 has an additional 2 dials on it for more direct access again. - LCD screen is nice to see make an appearance. Nikon have always kept them for their enthusiast models. However is probably a little redundant these days.
  15. Obviously it is, given they both have nearly identical form factors. Is that really so hard to understand? So instead of being patronising, how about point out specific examples? That shouldn't be too hard given how well understood the advantages are by everyone.
  16. I really fail to see where the drastically improved ergonomics are in these cameras. Someone care to actually point them out rather than just repeat the mantra 'and much better ergonomics' as an assumed throw away comment?
  17. They aren’t perfect, but they do work really well. Another advantage of that route is the option to use lenses without the SB and just use a ‘smart’ adapter instead, gaining extra reach. I haven’t seen anything out of the GH5 that I really loved, but it does offer a fair bit of bang for buck. But if one doesn’t care about 4K I hardly see the GH5’s advantages making much sense. For that type of user probably better off with an A7 III that they don’t need Speedbooster for.
  18. why? I thought it was the bestest camera ever in the whole wide world and none of these mirrorless toys would ever compete
  19. I don't get the bickering either, the C100 is still a superb camera. For 1080p final output, there is very little even now that makes better images. MOST of them though require you to shoot and edit in 4K and downsample on the way out. C100 allows that great image with a straight 1080p workflow. Also the speed at which one can work with the C100 as a tool over every mirrorless camera out there is just on a totally different level. There are some downsides: - No slow motion (or pretty garbage slow-mo anyway) That's about it. Those who are saying that there is no difference to other Canon DSLRs the OP has apart from NDs - Are you joking? Canon DSLRs have AWFUL 1080p output. They have no C-Log. No Wide DR worth talking about. They have no waveforms, you can't magnify view while recording, fiddly and rubbish controls (especially for things like audio), have no unlimited recording times, terrible battery life, way worse low light performance and much more. Apart from being roughly the same sensor format (very roughly, C100 is proper S35) and having the Canon name on the front, there is virtually nothing similar between them. Those saying why mention other models... well the OP asked for 'something else'. None of the Sony's will AF Canon lenses in video, not really. The A7 III is an ok camera and offers a lot of bang for buck, but I wouldn't recommend one given the OPs needs. Given none of them with AF Canon lenses properly, the A7S would likely be my only other recommendation. It has very very nice 1080p (downsampled in either FF or APS-C), can add XLR adapter, has Log and picture profiles, can have variable NDs built in to the EF adapter. Plus you aren't paying for 4K and other things you don't need. Easy as to hack and get unlimited recording. No issues with overheating in 1080p anyway (same with any of the Sony's, except some have poor 1080p and have to shoot 4K). Can shoot 4K if you need through external recorder. A very, very good 1080p camera. Feels a bit experimental as a 4K camera. External recorders also get rid of the time limit. FS700 is also an option, especially one without the 4K RAW upgrade (as it is a lot cheaper). Personally I'd get a C100 MkII. Canon aren't about to drop a new camera that will fit into your price bracket. Oh a Blackmagic Pocket 4K could be a serious alternative too.
  20. Canon are perfectly happy for them to. Have you not paid any attention to the camera market over the last half decade or more? That's like on the eve of the 36MP D800 launch people standing around saying Canon won't let Nikon eat their lunch and will have a high MP camera immediately after... years later we were still waiting. Yes I think they'll eventually do something, but they also don't want to cut their own grass. I don't care about peaking or zebras as I get that in monitor. 120fps would be good for some things, but honestly hoping the LX100 II will have 120fps and that will do me fine. Good to know. Most people I've known to have one have absolutely loved it. Yes the crop isn't really 1.74x because that includes the 16:9 or 1.85:1 crop, which isn't being included in the 'full frame coverage' models. It's pretty close to S35 and that's just fine by me. Seems very very likely.
  21. Do you mean the 1.17x crop? I would need to see massive improvements in rolling shutter personally to make this interesting. But otherwise looks good. Hadn’t even thought about X-T3 for video.
  22. I get that stuff is probably coming, eventually. But there is very little really known about it, seemingly the rumour sites know nothing other than that a new mirrorless is ‘probably’ coming. Most recent news has suggested it is basically a 5D IV in mirrorless form. If that’s the case I see little advantage in waiting. The main real advantage probably being the new processor which can do more compressed 4K like in the M50. I’m not really sure it appeals to me at all. Instead I’d like Canon to release a few more EF-M lenses (which sounds like its happening), or better yet Sigma release their DN series for EF-M.
  23. A Good Samaritan has kindly helped me out and done some side by side recordings of the FF 1080p mode and 1.7x 4K crop mode both recorded via the HDMI output to a BMVA4K. The results are basically as I expected, the 5D IV looks much nicer in that downsampled 4K mode and does seem to work in that way. I think with C-Log and DPAF using this recording method makes it a pretty killer option and am definitely looking to add one to my kit now. As an aside, the in camera 1080p does IMO look a lot better than Canon’s earlier efforts, like my 1DC (1DX) and 70D.
  24. I'm not sure what your argument is? Wasn't I agreeing with what you're saying? I'm a producer and have worked in the broadcast space. I was agreeing that most people don't have a clue the kind of gear and investment in that area. And it isn't just cameras, it's the whole workflow right through to broadcast. As you say, scary money. The people saying this stuff usually are weak at the idea of a $10k lens. Not the 1/4 million dollar tape deck.
  25. I didn't say it sucks, I also don't think it is weightless and magical. I think it is partly a very utilitarian design and I think that it is based on a nearly 30 year old design in a market that is well known for not liking change. I would argue I much prefer a C200 over a Sony PDW-900, but ENG stalwarts still run around with big ol' ENG cams. I think it works well as a body hanging off a big long heavy lens with a monopod propped underneath where the weight isn't on the wrist and the body is there for control and swinging things around. I think when you have a stumpy and heavy lens, like my Sigma Art 85 or the 105 Art, then the extra heft of the body is actually not good at all. Even with modestly heavy lenses. At that point the smaller body is actually better IMHO. Canon's system is far from complicated. But their tracking is just not as well set up or works as well. Saying that, most people using them aren't using the famed tracking modes anyway. In typical AF-C Canon is still faster than Nikon (and very easy to use). True. Canon are flooding the bottom of the market with dozens of entry level DSLRs. But the funny thing is, in these discussion forums NOBODY cares about those. And in the product space we do care about, Sony just took the top spot in North America. Of course you are. You are stating that it is obvious that Sony are taking this spot because they are the only ones with a recent release. This couldn't be further from the truth and is a device many are using to downplay the significance of this announcement. It isn't a small sample size at all. It is half a financial year in one of the biggest markets on the planet. Sample sizes don't get much bigger. I love how Canon make these announcements every 6 months and everyone just nods along. Every time Sony say something similar everyone disagrees. Of course it does. Do you care how many 1500Ds Canon sold? How about D3400s Nikon dropped? In the higher end of the market (not the top end), Sony have just proven that they can not only exceed Nikon in #2, but Canon in #1. Yes Nikon claimed something similar earlier this year. Again that's significant in that Canon have held the #1 spot for so long, to see this tidal wave of change will force them to adjust. The numbers are literally there, in this release and you want to try and still make that claim? Are you serious? Sony outsold Canon over half a year with their A7 (and A9) products over the entire portfolio of FF products from Canon. That is a far cry from the claims the 6D II (on it's own) would outsell the entire Sony catalogue. I know for a fact that people have a VERY skewed perception of how much Canon actually sell of these things vs Sony (and others). Also if you look on ANY sales chart you can find, a number of individual Sony FF models will be outselling the 6D II. That's one model on it's own outselling the Canon on it's own. Same can be said about the 5D IV and 1DX II. None of these have ever been particularly hot sellers at any time.
