  1. HI, K. RE #1) I'm just guessing but I assume Samsung repair had to replace the selector knob and perhaps more of the "innards" that was producing the random luminance bouncing. (It would never happen predictably.) BTW I am extremely careful with the NX1. No dropping or damage on my end at all. Q. I'd like to ask Andrew, Cycling Ben, Kisaha and Mars if any of you bought through the Adorama retailer. I bought my first NX1 (which turned green) and the second NX1 through them at their pre-Christmas 2015 blowout price of $1,999.00 with 16-50mm lens. I've always wondered if Adorama got a bad batch. My second NX1 came from Adorama as well. It's serial number is 8J7ZCN6G70003KR. THE SCREWY THING IS that the turning green is not consistent. I can't make it repeat predictably. I tell people it's like being married to Marilyn Monroe....364 days and nights of bliss and 1 day you'd like to forget about. Still those 364 are beyond belief! Here's some NX1 shots into the blazing setting sun. I was amazed how the sensor didn't freak out and how it delivered such fine resolution at 1920 (of the parasail's cords) when I was filming at 120 frames per second. It was breathtaking. One more thing. Andrew, is The EOSHD Samsung NX1 Setup Guide still available? I want my students to buy it. Please send me the link. Thanks.
  2. Hi, Andrew. Huge thank you for you taking the time to comment on this. While I have you, I'd like to ask a few extra things. So here goes. (I bought your excellent NX1 Manual, btw.) 1) The time it occurred with the second camera it was out of warranty. I had to pay. This was fine with me because the NX1 was doing the weirdest "luminance bouncing" and I wanted them to fix that for sure, as well as the green thing if they had time. They fixed the luminance bouncing, but in April 2019 I was filming another dancer on the dark stage and it turned green again. 2) So, I called Samsung over the last three weeks slowly worked my way up the approval chain until I reached the people that could approve to repair it again. That's where it is now. Fingers crossed they correct this odd anomaly. 3) This camera still, in my view, is a leader in the mirrorless market. The Sony a7 III and a7R III have closed the gap for near perfect, autofocus for video. And Canon got their great autofocus but still don't match the robust features on the NX1, (crop factor, h.265 etc.) Do you know if any other mirrorless camera is using the h.265 codec? Why? Why not? Hubris? $? 4) It's hard for me to believe the odds that I'm the only one that's had this green thing happen on two NX1's in a row. I often wonder if this unsolvable anomaly is what convinced them to take it off the market quickly. Although I have heard other rumors. I'd appreciate your perspective on the rumors. 5) I saw "new" NX1 bodies on Amazon US for $1,499.. Could these be really "new"? Have you heard about this. I have one on order. https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Wireless-Mirrorless-Digital-Camera/dp/B00NFDZRRA/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2BKLD2VX9WGTB&keywords=samsung+nx1&qid=1560923054&s=gateway&sprefix=samsung+nx1%2Caps%2C205&sr=8-3 Thanks again, Andrew. I'm still training filmmakers in DSLR and mirrorless filmmaking. The NX1 may never die. Bouncing Luminance short.mov
  3. I bought two NX1s. The first turned green while filming a dance rehearsal. I turned it on and off and it was fine. But I returned it to be safe. I got a second NX1. Seemed fine but a year later it turned green. The conditions that were identical were that I was filming in nearly all-black background, i.e. the stage of the dancers and the second time I was filming outside at night when the picture turned suddenly green. Anyone else have this problem occur? (BTW my second NX1 is in for repair at Samsung. Hope they can work some magic and find the cause of this anomaly.) Send me your experiences with this anomaly. I want to get a solution from Samsung because this remains an incredible camera. Thanks.
  4. Hi Happy Daze, I guess I neglected to tell you that I had done the reinstall the 1.41 firmware two days before the first test video I posted and receiving your recommendation to resetting and re-flashing the firmware. Is there an additional step after re-installing called "re-flashing"? I suppose I could reinstall 1.41 again. BTW, I contacted Samsung's Support Line last week and they said the "service center" would be calling me in 48 hours to set up sending it in to be serviced. It's been three days and I haven't heard from the service center. Nor would the Support Line give me the number to the service center. Do you have a number or a location of the service center?
  5. Here is the second test of the NX1. Welcome to a detective story. This second test is solely on the quirk my NX1 does. The quirk is that when I am in "M" mode, and I change from STILL to VIDEO, the NX1 goes into its own "auto exposure" mode and locks me out of changing the f stop. I bring this up because I want to hear from other NX1 users to see if that's happening to you. Let me know. BREAKTHROUGH: As I ran the tests the NX1 only exhibited the quirk 50% of the time in "M" mode. I've marked these incidents with a red bar so you can find them easily. (There's a blue bar on the video for the times the NX1 functioned correctly.) I also set the Mode Dial to C2 and found that the NX1 operated correctly 100% of the time. I'm guessing it is a malfunction in the Mode Dial, but it is not consistent. I didn't edit down the video because I thought if you saw the entire test you might spot something that I've missed that triggers the quirk. Thanks for your help. I changed no variables other than the Mode setting. Also, if you know a Samsung number to call that can reach someone in a higher position than the customer support line I'd be grateful to know it. I talked to Samsung help line last week and they said that the repair department would contact me in the next 48 hours. They wouldn't give me their phone number or address. Stay tuned. I hope Andrew Reid might catch sight of this and add his shoulder to the wheel at getting this sorted out. It's hard for me to believe that I'm the only NX1 user having these types of issues with the NX1. It's an awesome camera but as a professional I can't have it decide on its own to exhibit a quirk while I'm filming an interview.
  6. Kisaha, thanks for the comment. As you can see if you watch the video, once I go into video mode, the NX1 locks me out of adjusting the f/stop. I can move the dial all I want but the actual f/stop is not changing. So, please send me a short clip of you videoing something and change your f/stop while doing so. I need proof that my NX1 has a flaw so that Samsung will provide me a replacement camera, if possible. Thank you.
  7. Here's a video of three anomalies I've noticed with the NX1. Let me know if you can help sort these out. I love the NX1 and would like to have other NX1 users share their workarounds.
  8. Kisaha, thanks for the comment. I'll prepare a video showing what my NX1 is doing and the odd workaround I've devised. I should have it up in a day or so. I would like nothing better than to debug this area. I love the camera and would buy two more if I could get this stabilized. Samsung's got a stellar camera here and it blows me away every time I use it, especially in low light. The resolution is awesome. I tell people having my NX1 might be like being married to Marilyn Monroe. Unbelievable, heavenly bliss except once a year there's just a few seconds of ncosudfasdXXC**00-09lfnjsdf?moemosndn(%^@))ntasdlhthehndnds. and then she's fine again. I've been a D.P. for thirty years. Have a 5D M3. Glad we're sorting this out. Love to have my "Marilyn" drop that little quirk.
  9. Thanks for the comments, guys. I did an update to v1.41 and so far no greenies. It only has happened when I'm shooting a black stage or the blackness of night. I held my breath during a night shoot but it worked great. The funny thing I've found is that in video mode the NX1 ignores the f/stop setting and determines what it thinks is best. So I shot a woman against a white wall and couldn't get the camera to hold the f/stop I set for the face. Instead it darkened the shot to keep the wall from blowing out. The only way I could find around it was to do an EV adjustment and that seemed to compensate for the "auto exposure" subprogram that only seems active in video recording. Oddly enough I found that the EV setting actually does set the iris of the lens. I looked down the barrel. So the NX1 is wide open. I have ISO in AUTO. I click the AEL to stop AUTO ISO from fluctuating. Then, I set the EV value to be where I want it. When I click "roll" the f stop jumps to where it needs to be to achieve the EV setting. It's an odd work around but that's a path I found to override the "know-best" auto exposure the NX1 seems to have in the video mode.
  10. Thanks. I guess I didn't get the real terrifying thing that happened. Did you see the video where it goes from full color to black and green in an instant? Here's the link again. That's the anomaly I was really hoping for someone to say, "Yeah. That happened to me too." and maybe have a fix or a reason why it happened to me twice with two different NX1s. In this rehearsal video it happened twice....went from wonderful color to black and green in the middle of the shot. Check it out. I hope Andrew can address this, too.
  11. Hi, KnightsFan I was filming just AWB settings. Both times it happened were at extremely dark shoots, i.e. the dance performance and a night shoot of a street scene. I bought my first NX1, which is the one that did the dance video rehearsal green change. So I sent it back. I bought a second one and it didn't do it's first "green shift" until I'd had it for a year. Anyway, thanks for responding. I want to gather more NX1 users to fill in for the missing customer service from Samsung.
  12. Andrew, I hope you'll respond to this as well as let us set up an ongoing NX1 users forum (not just one reflecting on the past nor the hopes for the future and an NX2, and I would buy one tomorrow. Since there's no tech support line to call, I hope to answer some questions about odd things that have happened. I've been using my NX1 for four years and love it. Here are my top three questions. Question 1 is: "Why would the luminance "bounce" on this shot?" Question 2: "Has anyone had their NX1 go green on a night shoot?" https://vimeo.com/152670688 . Question 3: "Do you find that the NX1 will override your settings in video if it feels the shot is overexposed?" This happened on a shoot we did of a woman in open shade with bright wall behind her. The NX1 stopped down (though not in AUTO ISO) to compensate for all the white. So, I feel like I'm married to Marilyn Monroe. The NX1 is stellar in so many situations (unparalled auto focus performance in the video below, but once a year it goes a little nuts. 13. Just excellent work. Really, well done. I loved your texture shots of the school. Remember the rule of thirds but I can see that your portrait shots are dead center for maximum impact. I love the NX1 and I'd be interested in the lenses you used. Also, what color timing did you do?
  14. Beautiful work. I also have the NX1 and stunning results. I want to buy the 85mm Samsung but I rented one that continually fidgeted in trying to focus during filming. I mean like two - three times a second. Have you used this lens? Or does anyone reading this lens have this result? I'd like to buy one to finish my homeless documentary, which has a great deal of nighttime available light of the unfortunates in the rainy streets of LA. This is shot with Samsung's 16-50mm f 2.8.
  15. Hi, Kisaha, I remember you let me know that in a recent note. I sure would like to stay in touch with him. Is GitHub the only place he checks? I don't want to pester him but I did his hack that allows me to record past 29:59 min and was blown away by his expertise. I was hoping he might have a suggestion how to "settle down" the AF on the 85mm. It's a great lens and I wonder if it is because I had the AF set to FAST that caused the jittery searching for focus. Neither of the other Samsung lenses I have exhibit this jittery focus search. see this dance video where the AF was buttery smooth. (The side angle camera was the NX1. The front angle was a Canon 5D Mk3 (which looks pretty bad compared to the NX1. This is what convinced me to buy the NX1. So, Cary, you're recommending I not set the camera to CAF? What setting do you recommend. CAF worked really well (granted I was on a wider lens) and I was just so impressed how smoothly the Samsung 16-50mm's AF worked on this dance video, I thought the 85mm would be smooth too. Maybe I should set the AF to slow instead of FAST. (BTW the front angle on the dance video is the Canon 5D M3. The side angle and the entry shot is the NX1. Stunningly good auto focus as I walk into the theater. Check it out.
  16. I'd love to own the 85mm. I rented the lens and found it constantly adjust focus during filming video. Anyone else having that problem? Any solutions? Vasile, might there be a software mod to reduce the constant rechecking of focus on this lens?
  17. Hi BopBill, Thanks for the suggestion. On the shot three nights ago, I was on Auto White balance. The sensor went green 4 seconds into the shot. On the next shot, it went green 4 seconds in...but no changes in settings. Both were shot at 120 fps. The rest of the night the camera worked fine even at 120 fps.

  19. HI, I changed the privacy settings so you don't need a password. https://vimeo.com/152670688 NX1 goes green_SAM_0053-160121-SD (1).mp4 V13a - Thanks for the tip. I've been using the same SanDisk Extreme Pro card all year. 95MB/s 64GB.
  20. It isn't a tint issue. The camera's picture turned green and remained green. Here's a link to the first NX1 I bought in November 2015 that turned green while filming video. (Password is fletch) I notified Samsung but they'd already gone into "radio silence" about the NX1. I returned the camera. Then I ordered another NX1. I hoped that the "turning green" issue was only on the first NX1. Now this second NX1, which I've had for a year now, did it while filming the Christmas trees. Has anyone else experienced this? Any input on how to avoid it or correct it? Or do you have a way I can bring this to Vasile's attention.
  21. I've had my NX1 for a year now. Last night while filming the sensor turned green 4 seconds into the shot. I stopped and it did the same thing the next time I rolled. (I have 1.40 body firmware. I was filming at 120 fps.) But the rest of the shoot it worked perfectly. Anybody run into this? I'm wondering if this is why Samsung shut it down (cost of recalls, embarrassment, bad publicity for the brand, etc. I've never seen such an excellent camera disappear after beating all the competitors in the mirrorless category PLUS providing 4k internal with an SD card. I could go on and on. At the time, I hoped that Nikon bought the innards for their own mirrorless system. I still hope that will occur. The first NX1 I bought in November 2015 did this "go Green" on one shot, but then worked fine. I sent it back to Adorama anyway and they replaced it with the one I now have. At the time I just thought that the first camera was a lemon.
  22. Here's a project I shot at the gliderport near San Diego with my NX1. 50-200mm Samsung lens, shooting handheld at 120 fps @ 1920. Normal Gamma. When I'm not going to grade in post, I set the settings as follows: In the still photo menu/Picture Wizard/Standard RED 1.00, G 0.96, R 1.00, Sat 0, Sharpness -10, Contrast 0, Hue 0. (Sorry about the tiny lint in the upper frame.) I noticed the NX1 did have a little shift in luminance when shooting right into the sun, but the overall sharpness (all was on AutoFocus) was very pleasing. I had a polarizer on the lens. I'd like to form meetup in the Los Angeles area to share results and settings. Let me know if anyone's interested.
  23. Hi, Was the ungraded version shot in FF or Super 35mm?
