Yeah, I only really like about half of those shots, but I learn from mistakes, so I don't hold back on posting videos. Plus, more experienced people may see something, and I'll end up learning something. Sekhar is great that way. But yes, I was a moron and put my nd filter on before I turned on my camera and even though it was cloudy, I was getting a bad glare, so all of the beach shots, I shot at 800 ISO, so they look like crap, but how do you have a boardwalk video without a couple shots of the beach? I also think I am stretching the footage to its limits in post, I have to dial some stuff back, but it kinda looks like vintage footage, so I am getting there. I think it's a lot better than my first few videos with this camera... I hope. Anyway, as always Liam... Thanks for looking!!!

Zak, have you personally tested any similar monopods? I'm in the market for one, and I was undecided between the manfrotto and one by a company called cinetree. I literally read about the Sirui 5 minutes before I saw your post. How stable are the feet? Would you feel comfortable being a foot or two away from it outside with a small set up on top?Obviously not on a windy day.

I know, I know, you guys are probably sick and tired of my color tests, but with every clip I upload, I gain a wealth of information and tips from a few of the members. And the ones who hate my attempts are usually kind enough to keep it to themselves... No seriously, any tips you have is much appreciated. In this video, I went down to the boardwalk in Ocean City, NJ and took some shots. I tried to do a vintage color grade, but with every video I have ever uploaded, I am not too sure how it looks... being a newbie and all... and possibly a little blind. Anyway, thanks for looking!!! Oh yeah, I think I definitely need to get me some Neat Video.

Thanks for the tip, I messed around with it a little and you can really get a cool Kodachrome vibe. I blew out the highlights a little on the chrome.

What WB setting do you use? With the NX500, I was using the baked in settings, but then I got lazy and started using AWB. I tried Kelvin, but I need a lot more practice for that precision. Recently, I tried the AWB + Tungsten. It seems to work pretty good, does the NX1 have that? If so, do you know its purpose? Also, how do you get that cool haze in your grades? It gives your images that smoky, vintage look.

I had the 50mm 1.4 ai-s as well, one of my first Nikkors, but I never really loved the lens. I liked my 50mm series e, I spent 17 bucks on way better. So, I ended up selling my set of Nikons. When I was looking for a good 24mm, I got a great deal on non-ai. I decided to pick up a 50mm to compliment it and just went with the cheapest f2 I could get. While I was waiting for it to arrive, I did some research and learned that it was considered by some to be one of the sharpest 50mm lenses. And once I started shooting with it, I can confirm it. It's an absolutely beautiful lens. In fact, I am considering getting a D5500 now because of that lens set.

I think the zeiss milvus are probably better than the sigma art, but for the money, the sigma's are great lenses. Some have said that the 18-35mm is one of the best zoom lenses ever made. My friend just bought the 30mm 1.4 and I shot a couple clips with it yesterday, and it looked good. I think Kendy Ty shoots only with that lens... But the older version. Look into the xeen lenses too, supposed to be very nice. There's also a member here, Rich, who is the owner of Dog Schidt Optics and he has some beautiful lenses he has repurposed for reasonable prices.

Yeah, I think EditReady is Mac only. I am no authority on the nx500. I have had more failures than successes, but I think I'm finally STARTING to get the hang of it. When it's right, the image is effin beautiful.

Looks great. The NX500 is the same way. I have done extensive testing and contrast at default 0 is the best. Tweaking contrast too much messes up the colors... At least to my eye. I tick saturation down to -4 and sharpness dialed all the way. Have you tried EditReady? I think it does a pretty good job. Of course I convert to 1080p prores. I think it gives the footage a little more weight. Black pro must is a good idea... Hmm. Anyway, your shots look wicked. You should make a video showing your coloring workflow.

Thanks Aaron, means a lot coming from you... I love your work. This color correction/grading thing is really new to me. I was using a t2i and eos-m for years... Shooting Prolost Neutral, most of the time, a lens would usually create the "look" I was going for. But the NX500 is a different beast altogether. Even though it's a consumer camera like the rebel line, it handles color entirely differently. Anyway, thanks for looking and the tip!!!

It's getting there. I don't love the last shot, but I'm definitely starting to get a better feel for it. Thanks for the tip with tweaking the gamma primarily... Helped a bunch.

At least it's not worse. Thanks for looking!!!

Here's another test. Thanks for humoring me. As always any tips are greatly appreciated!!!

Check out Mattias' videos. He has quite a few examples using vintage glass with the NX1. My favorite is his video using the 35mm 2.8 Carl Zeiss Jena. I believe it's the zebra version. I know the newer 35mm 2.4 is considered one of the best lenses ever made. Also some people feel the Nikkor 50mm f2 is the sharpest lens and it can be had for $50 or less.

Yeah, to be honest, gamma levels confuse me a little. I know a lot of people raise the gamma and get that hazy, milky look to their clips. Is that an in style look? I instinctually lower the gamma, but I do like that other look. Do you use different layers to adjust your highs and lows?
-
Thanks for taking the time Sekhar. So you don't tweak the contrast at all in post? I have always liked high contrast I guess, but I am realizing a lot of other people don't. Of course, I am using the waveform and I am not even bringing the lows down to the 0 line... I keep them around the 10 mark. The reason I lowered the saturation is two fold... 1. I was using the settings the guy from Cinema5D used for the NX500 introduction review... 2. Because the colors are way off at 0 saturation in camera, in the NLE, I can get more accurate colors then I am getting in camera. With that being said... I am obviously doing something wrong because it just doesn't look right. Thanks for the tips.
-
Yeah, I use -2 saturation as well. But I recently saw the demo video from the guy from cinema5d and he used -4 saturation in the demo, so I have been messing with that. The nx500 doesn't have gamma dr, and very little info out there regarding optimum settings, so it's test and next. No problem, I had actually seen a bunch of your videos a few months back. Look forward to the nx1 clips.

I am back with another test of the NX500. I have recently been testing the settings that were used in the Cinema5D promo video for the camera before its launch. He used Saturation -4, Sharpness -10, and I believe Contrast -5... even though that has not been confirmed. Either way, I am looking to use this cam for an upcoming horror short, so I was testing out some looks. I still haven't settled on the perfect settings for this camera, but to be honest I haven't done much shooting with it lately. I think I went a little heavy handed with one of the graded shots... Anyway thanks for looking and as always... any tips would be greatly appreciated.
-
Yeah, I have the NX500 and I have experimented with nearly every possible setting. My current set up is -4 saturation -10 sharpness and -5 contrast. Not sure how the colors are with the nx1, but I find the colors on the nx500 to be off. If I don't desaturate in camera, the yellows oranges and greens just don't look right. But I am a newbie, so it could be user error. Btw, love your videos man... Top notch!!!

I never saw any of Albert Fast's work until this post... I was blown away. Great stuff. Too bad he sold off the NX1 for the G7.

Trust me, get EditReady and don't look back. It is much more than just a transcoding tool. You can put LUTS on the footage pre transcoding, you can change frame rate and ratio, and there are a slew of metadata tools. It handles nearly every codec, except raw dngs, I have ever needed to convert and they constantly update it. And it is super fast.

Canon EOS M + Focal reducer = Fullframe raw for 300$?

Damn you Max... Now I want a 50d. Amazing colors. It looks like a vintage post card that would read Greetings from... That blue sky reminds me of Kodachrome. Nice job. And the funny part is, like the woman in your video, I was just finishing a Bloody Mary as I watched it. I also like how candid your videos are. You must be very unassuming or trustworthy because nobody in your videos seem uncomfortable at all. -
Do you underexpose because of Gamma DR? I am still searching for the perfect settings for my NX500. It doesn't have Gamma DR or the choice of 0-255 or whatever the other option is. I really like your footage so if I could get my image looking half of what you're getting I'd be a happy filmmaker. Recently I have been exposing to the right with -4 saturation, -5 contrast and -10 sharpness and I have been getting pretty good results, but then I see your footage and learn you're underexposing = I am confused all over again. Btw, where do you live? It looks like the most beautiful place in the world.
-
Ricardo, you have some beautiful looks in those images. What camera settings are you using? Do you expose to the right and adjust in post, or do you try to nail your exposure in camera?

EditReady. I think ClipWrap may do it as well. It's cheaper than EditReady, but a lot more basic.
