  1. The GH5 has been a major roller coaster for me... I went from no interest, to a lot of interest, to no interest after seeing the early videos compared to 5D3 ML Raw, to a little interest this week due to the features. As of today I am unsure if I will get one or not. I have almost hit Buy it Now twice but then I watch my 5D3 footage and think... do I really need a GH5? Both times, the answer has been no and this is coming from a place where the features would be a godsend for my next short. So, I am still up in the air. The features I am most excited about, I can get with the FZ2500 for half the price and if I want 4K, I am more interested in the D7500 for almost half the price as well... but I am still on the fence because I know the GH5 will be a workhorse for those short films that I don't want to bother with ML Raw post workflow.
  2. I guess that's why they make vanilla and chocolate but I don't think the Varicam beat any of the cinema cameras except for the Sony. It was much better than the hybrids though but against the cinema cameras, the highlights looked bad to me. It was better than the Pocket, theoretically, but the Pocket has a more interesting look IMO. As I said in Webrunner's post on the same topic... the biggest surprise in that test is the BMCC underexposed.
  3. Because a Varicam is nowhere near as good as an Arri.
  4. No offense, but as defensive as you have been about the GH5, I just figured you owned one... but you're right, unless you want to shoot Raw, the GH5 seems to be the best bang for the buck. My only issue with it is that I have seen a complete mix of amazing footage or horrendous footage. Not much in between.
  5. @Emanuel wait a minute... you don't even own a GH5 yet? Or did I misread that comment a few up? But to add to the discussion, when I owned the FZ2500, single point touch af worked a lot better than I though it would. If you are a one man band operator and use only native lenses, it may work better than some of the weird focus rings on m4/3 lenses... I know I liked it better than the manual ring on the FZ2500... and that manual ring wasn't the worse I've ever used.
  6. Man that Seal Beach October video looks great. Awesome color, good enough resolution. I wish JVC would put out a camera in DSLR form, I might be interested in something like this. But for the money, it's probably the best deal around.
  7. Yeah this is my dilemma, I have a very specific short I am writing that could really benefit from IBIS and 4K 60p... and in some ways just the fact that it is shot on a GH5 may help to spread the short around since so many more eyes will see it. But 2 grand is a lot for a new camera, for one short. Sure I'll use it for other things but still love my ML Raw. I just wish Panny would release their high bitrate, all-I 1080p in a cheaper model.
  8. Thanks again, Squig. So just to be clear... set for 60/720 in Canon menu, then set FPS to 48 or 60, exact FPS, then change the resolution in ML to lower than 1080 and I assume it will let me know what resolution is even possible?
  9. Get an LS300... I'm unsure if there is a better deal on the planet right now for cost to features.
  10. Ugh, I predict less money in my bank account by summer.
  11. Does this require MLV Lite, or can the regular build handle a higher frame rate at a lower resolution?

    Lenses

Well, I'm in the states, so I have seen a few over here. I know they're a little pricy but since you paid so little for the lens, it's worth it. All of those lubricants that have dried and breaking down will eventually effect the optics.
  13. Thanks Brother, without owning one, I agree with most of your points. I wish there was more CineLikeD and Natural examples floating around... just because a camera shoots VLog doesn't mean everybody needs it. I recently bought a 5D3 and am ecstatic with it... it really is something else but it does lack any quick post workflow. For right now I am happy with what I have, but I have a few possible upcoming shorts that will require a quicker turnaround with cheaper media and 4K 60p and these honest reviews help me make a choice. Thanks for your thoughts. Thanks for posting this. As much as I don't care about 4K, the 4K 60p is pretty impressive and the other features are great as well. But the 5-axis ibis from the GX85 has really spoiled me. It's amazing how many composition options you have, when you're not hindered by a tripod.

    Lenses

That happens to all of those lenses. The good new is you can have them declick it while it's being cleaned. I think there's a few places that list on eBay that will do a full CLA on old Zeiss Jena lenses for a fairly inexpensive price.
  15. Lol. They could have no plans to ever make a Pocket II and they're just using that as an excuse. I guess I'll have to settle for 3K Raw on my 5D3.
  16. Probably the best reaction I've ever received from my work.
  17. Love FCPX, just wish it would work with CDNGs.
  18. Yeah, but I'm unsure why they believe it needs to be 4K? 2.5k in 24 as 60p would be a fine upgrade for the Pocket and would quench most people's needs for the next couple of years.
  19. When I briefly had the FZ2500, I loved the quick/slow function... does the GH5 have that? And if so, does it work in 4K? Here's a dumb, slow motion, test video I did with FZ2500... would look a lot better in 4K... Also the slow motion in that video was all shot in variable frame rate mode if it wasn't the slow/quick mode. Does variable frame rate work in 4K?
  20. Well it worked. Are you thinking of getting a new camera? I'm sure you could get more out of Raw than I do.
  21. So, now that the GH5 has been out for over a month, what is the verdict from the early adopters? I have heard so many mixed reviews and have seen a lot of videos from people saying they are returning their GH5, I am curious to know from the EOS HD community. BH has even had a half dozen used GH5s for sale and they are still selling it for preorder? It's actually rather strange that one of the biggest camera stores in the world hasn't gotten any GH5s in stock, but that's neither here nor there. Part of me wants to buy one and the other part says... meh ML Raw looks way better. If the GH5 was selling for $1500 or $1600, I probably would buy one, but at $2000... I'm not so sure, even though I have an upcoming short that it would be perfect for.
  22. Damn, that looks awesome!!! This may be my favorite of your videos Jase. Great shots + great edit + greay color + great music = cool as shit video!!! Are you still using Standard with everything dialed down and FilmConvert to color?
  23. Way too hard on yourself. The opening shot with the light effect works brilliantly. I really thought it was a moon time lapse. Very interesting stuff, with some great low budget pointers I'll be stealing.
  24. They should work but probably nothing wider than 25mm. With the GH4, G7, GX85, G85 you could go as low as 12.5mm with some 1" c-mounts.
