  1. This is potentially great news. Apple has some very talented people on board, however their myopic behavior over the last few years is astonishing.

If Apple had been on their game, the announcement would have coincided with a product release within weeks not some vague "not this year" comment. Why it has taken Apple two years longer than it should to admit it screwed up the last Mac Pro is mind boggling given their talent and resources.

Imagine if Apple had announced a June release of a Mac Pro that is expandable, upgradable and state of the art powerful. Imagine single or dual AMD Naples CPU'S with 32 to 64 cores. Imagine multiple PCIE slots that can accommodate both Nvidia or AMD graphics cards, multiple M.2 slots, and yes a UHD burner to go along with the revamped version of DVD Studio Pro that can author UHD and Blu-ray disks.

Hopefully Apple will get back in the game this time. Thier relevance with pros depends on it. Every pro knows that Apple blew them off to chase consumer cash. There is no need to sugar coat it...

  2. Two questions:

"In this way 4K opens the door to very very high quality 1080p with 10bit luma & 4:4:4 colour sampling if you use the right workflow –" (1) could you be more specific on your workflow here?

    (2) In your opinion, can these NX1 shortcomings be fixed via firmware updates if Samsung wanted to do it? (I.e. Higher bitrate recording, color science tweaks) if so, what are the odds they will?

  3. In medical school never have I been taught by my professors to make complete psychological diagnosis on patients based on their opinion about a blog, or a camera. This comment is rude, and irrelevant. You have no idea how actual NPD patients live. Discuss the matter at hand, filmmakinb, cameras, not disorders.
    ______________________

First off Ebrahim, you don't have to go to med-school to know what Narcissistic behavior looks like. Second, although the comment may be rude it is spot-on and very relevant. Andrew is providing a FREE service in the form of EOSHD. Jimmy and others like him contribute nothing except criticism, self-aggrandizement and smart-ass comments. You don't come into someone's house and bag on them constantly. If you don't like what Andrew has to say, your options are many, including LEAVING. Most people with tact will just agree to disagree. It takes a true narcissist to relentlessly try to convince someone else of the error of their own opinion, or to try to shame them for having that opinion. It is simply Reid's opinion about Canon, you don't have to agree with it, but he is certainly entitled to have it.

The topic at hand is Canon's stupidity, so eloquently penned by Reid. Share your own opinion if you like, but quit trying to CONVERT Andrew to YOUR way of thinking. I suspect Andrew will alter his opinion of Canon when (if), in his mind, they quit being stuck-on-stupid.

  4. Quite easy really.. and two fold, 1) You openly admit you don't like big, prosumer cameras and prefer the stealth and freedom of smaller form factor cams... 2) The big paper spec you were chasing, at the time of purchase, was 4K, so you were ok to downgrade the other specs.

I'm only taking the piss about your gear lust anyway (satirically, of course). It is in your interests to chase the best bang for buck and report on it.

I'll always laugh at the Canon agenda, but understand why you do it and do actually like and respect this place, for the most part.

How long have you suffered from Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD)?

  5.

Samsung simply has to further tune its sw (fw) and add slog2 and vlog, along with cropped 4k and, if technically possible, even higher bitrates and 10bit recording.

I agree. Samsung is in a unique position, they don't have to worry about cannibalizing their own high-end market with the NX1. The NX1 is their high-end. Keep making the NX1 better and better, gain a real following. Next, Samsung could pull out all the stops and give us a F55 or even a F65 for the price of a FS7 if they wanted. They make both the sensor and processor, and decent glass when they want to. Who could stop them?

  6. Absolutely Agree. The NX1 I have now is a different camera than the one I started with, thanks to firmware updates. Very impressive, I hope they keep it up. My short list of wants on future firmware updates: (1) H.264 option (2) Even higher bitrate H.265 option (3) Clean up audio hiss/improve quality when using an external mic input into NX1. This is a problem, even when using a good preamp. So far I am only happy with audio fed into an external recorder, which of course requires a sync in post.

  7. Last month was a breath of fresh air, interesting conversation about filmmaking... Back to square one with the anti canon clickbait

Shame, good forum and you post decent info, but the Canon clickbait is tiresome.

    Bored... Over and out

Please indulge us and make your "over and out" permanent! If you are so bored, start your own blog and see how that works for you...Easy to be a critic Jimmy, harder to produce. I for one am tired of your snot nosed, know it all or been there attitude. Oh, and don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.

  8. Yes I think it's an excellent policy!

There are enough idiots who read the blog already, don't want to attract any more idiots!

    Enough idiots!

    My policy is no idiots!

If you don't agree, you're an idiot! :)

    I like your policy!

Some may not agree, but from a few (sometimes many) of the comments I have read on this blog, sadly you are spot on.

Wonder if there is some sort of litmus test that could weed them out...  (IQ has to be greater than shoe size for example)

  9. you think an epic will fit on a small droidworx? an epic would require at least 4 times the lift power. Pure nonsense.. just stop speaking shit. I am more than capable of making decisions that will make me money without some internet know it all giving me advice on a camera they have never used and on a drone they clearly know nothing about.

First off, Droidworx is now Aeronavics thanks to Lucas, but I digress. Yes Jimmy, you most certainly can put an epic on an Aeronavics craft. As a matter of fact you have your choice of at least 2 to choose from. The skyjib 8 ti-QR can carry 4.5 to 12 pounds of payload with an overall diameter of 1160 mm (45  43/64 inches) or the skyjib X4 XL ti-QR can carry 11 to 16.5 pounds with an overall diameter of just 1020 mm (40 5/52 inches). Since you did not talk about models, don't soil your shorts over Doug's response. Given your snotty retorts, sounds like you are a bit insecure about the entire matter.

  10. The XC10 is a dog with fleas in low light. Not speculating here, I have seen it. All the bitrate in the world will not fix it. 10 bit 422 will not fix it. The problem is twofold, small sensor and slow glass, neither of which you can do anything about. A 1" sensor is 12.80 x 9.60 mm or 122.88 square mm. A MFT is 17.30 x 13.00 mm or 224.90 square mm. An APS-C is 23.60 x 15.60 mm or 368.95 square mm. The APS-C sensor is THREE bloody times the size of a 1" sensor. The MFT sensor is almost twice as large.

If you don't care about low light performance, go for it, if that floats your boat. It does not float mine.

  11. Perhaps, but only in the sense that they are all pretty rubbish.

    Get a NX1.

Good advice, I picked up an NX1 kit when they had the $400.00 discount during NAB. UHD produces a lovely image, very happy with the color and detail. If it were a Canon I would have had to go up to the C300 Mark II to find joy. I actually find the ad-on vertical grip feels better to work with. Do you still feel that EditReady is the best solution for transcoding?

  12. IMO, this just proves that the segment of the market that Blackmagic sell into care more about specs on paper, than about how the camera actually works - or looks (the image)...

...The problem is - Canon is a camera business. It's not a software and hardware business that makes cameras on the side - like Blackmagic. For Blackmagic, making low cost cameras is, in a way, a way to push sales of their other hardware and their software. Blackmagic are not making low cost cameras as a crusade for those who can't afford better...

...Those who use the 5D for video are a comparatively small sectino of the market compared to those who use the 5D for stills, or use a C(x)00 camera for video. When they can charge $15,000 for a cinema camera, why would they build similar features into a camera that costs 1/5th the price? If people are paying for it, why would you give them a reason to stop?

...Because, correct me if I'm wrong, but I find it difficult to believe that the advent of the GH4 and A7s have hurt Canons sales for their 5D's or C(x)00 cameras much at all..

...I don't understand - why should Canon care about a tiny segment of the market that want the same features as their pro cameras but can't afford them..? Because some of them are talented...?

9 months ago I was at Cinegear and everyone was talking about the URSA which was about to ship in a month or two... 6ish months after it starts shipping, BMD bring out a better camera in a better body for cheaper...

Where to start? First off, it only proves their viewfinder is a prototype...wait for the production model before you pass judgement.

So using your logic, Blackmagic spends millions designing and marketing their cameras, so they can then hook you in and give you a copy of Resolve and Fusion for free?

I agree canon sells way more 5D's for stills than for video. But don't kid yourself. If you think the GH4, A7s, and NX1 have not cut into 5D's, sold for video use and C100 sales, you best think again.

Canon and you really don't seem to understand. If your competitors offer more for less, you will loose market share. If you keep it up very long, your own customers jump ship. Once a customer feels screwed over, they are gone, usually for a long time. You can't ride on branding forever.

Why do you think the URSA had a sensor you could upgrade? If you look at the list of cameras with a sensor upgrade option, you will find it to be very short.

  13. I'm putting serious thought into investing my Sony FS7 savings into Blackmagic (URSA Mini, Micro Camera & Video Assist). They just seem by far the most innovative & best value company who listen to their users. They are delivering some amazing tools for little cost - and it will only get better. I've had my eye on the FS7 but i must admit I much, much prefer the "feel" behind the Blackmagic image (prefer the Cinema Camera/Pocket).

i think those sticking to DSLRs should just forget Canon for now - there are plenty more tools elsewhere to tell stories.

I had some hands on with the URSA mini at NAB. Very impressive build quality, and built in monitor. Easy to get accurate focus. I was told the new sensor will do ISO 1600, while the old sensor is ISO 800. While no Sony A7s, the 15 stops of DR can be put to good use in Resolve. Resolve 12 is now a full fledged editor with multicam, and audio mixing. I am hopeful with the direction Blackmagic is heading.

  14. Canon seems hopelessly lost in a market segment that SHOULD matter to them. Indie filmmakers can and do have incredible talent, but often not incredible bank accounts. They don't want consumer toys but real tools they can work with.

I felt the atmosphere at NAB between Canon's booth and Blackmagic Design's was a bit of a metaphor. Canon's was full of suits glad handing each other. BD's was very hands on with people really wanting to improve their craft.

The URSA mini  looks very promising. Solid and about half the size of the URSA.

    image.jpg

  15. It seems obvious Canon wants to protect it's higher end products, but get real Canon. $2500 gets you slow fixed glass, and a 1" sensor? As pointed out, Canon would not even have a higher end video line if it were not for the success of the 5D series. I remember the Canon XL-1, awesome for the money at the time, sold like crazy. What happened Canon?  Samsung should put together a rig with a super 35 sensor, internal/external recording with 422 10 bit codec, XLR connectors, internal 4K (like NX-1) and higher bitrate recording options. They have no higher end to worry about cannibalizing. Sell it for 5K or less, and they would OWN the enthusiast market.

  16. What amazes me here is the lack of tolerance for those who hold a viewpoint other than the politically correct (main-stream) opinion. Andrew has an opinion on this topic that is not PC and I respect him for having the guts to make it public. It is OK for others not to agree with that opinion, but then leave it alone. Quit trying to convince him or anybody else that he is wrong for having that opinion. He has his free agency, period. Why are all of you trying so hard to show him the "error of his thinking"? Has it ever occurred to you that maybe YOUR OWN thinking is flawed? Is narcissism really that prevalent that we can't agree to disagree and move on? We have people coming on Andrews own site and bagging on him left and right for his point of view. May I suggest instead to go to some pro BBC site and preach to the choir, you will have more fun. Now I see Lammy posting popular opinion poll numbers. Who Cares? Think for yourself.  If we have learned anything from history, it is that the masses are often wrong.

  17. I thought I would check back on this 'discussion' again. It has helped me understand better why this website is so underwhelming to me.

I say that as someone who has used this site for years as (one more) reference for filmmaking.

The rot started to form a while back - before this Clarkson nonsense - when I read a post about the LX100. An amazing little camera I felt. But it got sneered on - initially.

Soon after there was a  'rethink' - suddenly it was a super piece of kit etc etc

Later after getting flamed by SleepyWill and some other old timers, I started to mentally list why this website constantly disappoints. By that I mean I spend my valuable time occasionally checking in, see nothing much, so check out again...nothing compelling here (for me) basically.

    So here are my gripes:

    1. The website is named after one proprietary camera system. In business terms, this is silly. Its like the kid who starts TripodsRUs - only to advertise a year later that he will also sell you a Slider, or a Monopod or whatever. It illustrates a lack of vision. A simplistic outlook. Of course it also ostracises Nikon or Sony folks, at least subconsciously, which seems unnecessary if its meant to be about filmmaking (which it isn't)

    2. The website talks largely about Consumer Purchasing Decisions. It might be better named CreditCardCameraConsiderations.com or maybe BokkehSupermarket.com or perhaps EndlessUpgrade.com

    3. The Clarkson chatter shocked me (and others here too it seems). Its almost fantastical that 'filmmakers' would defend this JC stuff. Apologies to those with me on this, but to those who are gushing forth with the latest skinny on poor JC and his downtrodden crew ...really? Is this news? for a filmmaking site? Regardless of whether people like the crap or not its EXTREMELy telling that by the end of this week it could be the most discussed topic - ever - on this site...

    4. There is damn all abstract, challenging, artistic, genuinely creative discussion initiated by Andrew Reid. As editor/writer, I would've thought thats a failing, if others agree. Some do I know, as Ive read their posts of frustration ("What About Storytelling", etc) -

    5. The reason JC+Crew gets s much focus, and Machinery From Canon et al gets focus, is perhaps because this is an Industrial News Site. Not A Creative Filmmaking Site. Its for people who are in 'the business', 'the trade' (or want to be) and therefore it seeks to Defend Jobs At All Costs. Well screw that. No filmmaker I know has a real job, whether they're swanning around Cannes or Berlin or not. They are constantly fighting broadcasters, distributors, unions, investors, bosses and banks to get their sh1t made.

Now if this is a site for jobbing SkyNews Cameramen or, thats cool. But why not say so? And lets slot a few more articles in about staff conditions, retirement plans, commuting problems etc. But don't pretend its Cahiers du fricken Cinematograper....

    6. Seek out all the posts on Framing, Composition, Production Design, Editing Technique (not software) - there aint many folks. Why? Andrews busy? No problem, but just don't pretend to yourself that EOSHD is something it isn't. Its less useful than the Reviews Stories on BH's online  shop. Most of the time. I wish it wasn't (and don't screw with me you Clarkson-loving Etype-lusting future retirees out there) - I've paid my dues and used this site for a long time. Hell I probably accounted for 5% of its traffic.

A good example is the 'Pinned' Topic on "Shooting Inspiration and Ideas" - Nice idea to start a discussion. Just a pity A.R. does not mention any inspiration or Ideas. Thats for the plebs i guess. This is the kind of DailyMail hack website/hipster blogger nonsense which peeves me no end. Why is it pinned? You wanna solicit some traffic on that subject? Cool. Why not put up or shut up? Is it just to try to start a conversation on 'fimmaking"? Well, too bad (for all of us) - nobodys biting. Its got 24 replies compared with Clarksons hundreds. Wonder Why...

    7. This site has all the architectural and functional finesse of a bad Themeforest Joomla site. I can buy it in India for 30 quid. To me, thats lazy. Theres lots of gifted designers out there, and they'd probably do it for free to contribute to a creative community. If there was a creative community. Sorry Everybody but a community is not just a website where a few hundred people occasionally read and post a reply.

    8. The site's content is taxonomically random in a way that frustrates and does't invite easy reading. Looking for location documentary stories? Nope. (and don't mention TAGS please...)

    9. The sites been up for nigh on three years and It has helped build Brand Reid. Good. We all need to sell advertising. Good. Good....BUT...Out of maybe....30,000 posts, Andrew has posted nearly 7,000 it says. Thats also good, and I've read, appreciated many, slept through many more...BUT is this a place that gets my time? IS it trying hard to be a Curated and Edited Place for Filmmaking and Filmmakers - naaaah...it aint.

    10. Andrew has been downright out of line to some posters here IMO. Its my opinion, s'all, but it seems I'm not the only one who sees this. Now I know us mere readers can't be 'as equal' as the publisher. I get that. Thats fine. But easy with the entitled, patronising tones please. It seems...to insult your readership.

    11. These days everyones an expert on something. Building Your Brand Is Key, they say. I do fear that EOSHD's brand is built on exceedingly weak foundations however. The answer is to shape up and do what it promised. Or else delegate this 'content' work to another. Someone who is a good Editor. Personally I've never met an Editor in Publishing who was also a useful cameraperson or cinematographer. Or vice versa. Andrew's credentials as a cultural commentator are (for me) forever damaged after his passionate pleas that the BBC were acting like cultural fascists (or words to that effect). Really Andrew? You think that TG is "Important Work" huh? I always thought you were somewhat relevant. I was wrong. Way wrong. That doesnt mean you don't know your way around a german or japanese camera, but only a dinosaur would defend JC like you have, bless.

    12. Its not ideal to scream at the subtle racism on this site by some very few contribs, but at least it would be good to have some fun with those weirdos using this forum to take the last train to Clarksonville and defend Mr. Camerons drunk racist mate Jeremy?  Could even set up a vintage car club for any EOSHDs distraught TG Fans? The BRollers?

Ok...theres my civic duty completed for another year. I trust I haven't offended anyone this time.

Filmmaking shouldn't be conventional. It should be brave. Different. Visceral. It should also be honest and engage with the world around us.

Top Gear on the other hand is Prince Philip's favourite show.

It has nothing to teach 'Filmmakers'.

    Get it Andrew?

What is your point Jay Edgar? Who asked you for a review of EOSHD? Better yet, who do you think cares what you think? If you don't like the site, go somewhere else. Why take your time to bag on Andrew? What are your accomplishments? Since you think the site is so crappy and so easily outdone, please direct us to yours...So easy to bag on someone else and their accomplishments. So easy to be critical of others.

Seems like you got your shorts in-a-bunch over the Clarkson issue and want to take it out on Andrew Reid because of his position. I commend Reid simply for the fact that he took a position and felt strongly enough about it to vocalize it. You don't have to agree with it, that is alright, but don't shoot the messenger. It is so easy and safe to play in the middle, don't take a stand, don't say anything controversial, and by all means, don't offend anyone. It is also gutless. Clarkson understands this and so does Reid.

  18. Well Andrew isn't directly defending assault, that's a little twisted. He is arguing that the BBC should have covered it up from public scrutiny. I argue it can't be covered up and as a public tax tayer that I expect transparency in the system. This is what I want to see: http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/investigation-summary.pdf

Andrew's article argues about how there should be a different law for people up there, but again, I disagree. There may be exceptional circumstances where lives are on the line (like immunity for war criminals/whistleblowers etc.) but respectfully: popular entertainment and Clarkson isn't up there with that power of leverage.

The rest of the article and his subsequent posts about the opinionated few, political correctness, and twisted analogies... are distractions that Andrew himself introduced into the conversation. And we all know how they escalate on da interweb...  ;)

What planet do you live on Lammy. Why do you hold Clarkson to a infinitely higher standard than your political leaders that actually shape public policy and control lives. They lie, cheat, steal, send young men out to get killed in useless wars to further their own agenda, perform false flag operations, political assassinations and order drone attacks that kill innocent civilians. Where is the outrage from people that think like you on that reality?? As a "tax payer" where is your outrage??

Get some perspective. Clarkson got involved in a very short altercation. No one went to the hospital, nobody died. You and others act like he went in and shot a bunch of kids in a school. If you saw the scene of Clarkson and the producer in a movie, you would consider it real life, which it is. The audience would probably love it.

Clarkson is a loose canon, but that is Clarkson. That is what makes him perfect for the role he plays so well. That is EXACTLY why 350M watch the show. In a world filled with political correctness and brown nosing, Clarkson plays the opposition. He is the poster child of rebellion against all the nonsense. If you can't see the greatness in that alone, then I feel sorry for you.

  19. Sorry guys, but I have to agree with Andrew Reid on this. This got blown way out of proportion and the BBC is acting stupidly in a very real sense. It will end up hurting the BBC more than they can imagine. Clarkson was the show, period. It was his irreverent behavior and sense of humor that made it what it was. If I were Clarkson, I would screw the BBC, take Hammond and May with me, use my own production company, change the name to "Next Gear", cut a deal with Netflix,  and stream pay per view worldwide.

People thought Glenn Beck was done when he and Fox parted company. He is doing better than ever!
