  1. Question to me is, did C5D intentionally produce a misleading review. Maybe their conclusions are just wrong* because C5D is not competent or able to judge the product? * Maybe they should have said "We've tried x, y, z, but could not find a way to see a useful difference in 8 bit versus 10 bit recording" ? - instead of saying something IS. The Slashcam article shows the editors are possibly not ready to work with the GH5 10 bit files, I think C5D should have taken this possibility into account. Like one would not judge the RAW photos without having an updated RAW interpretation. From the over processed video comparing 8 vs 10 bit I do think 10 bit does help a lot. On the other hand I think the 8 bit's limitation acts as a noise reduction filter, whereas 10 bit records more noise/detail in the shadows. This may eat more of the available bitrate leaving less for the well exposed areas? I think with a good noise suppression setting in the editor you probably can have a more pleasing result from the 10 bit recording. BUT we will see!
  2. HI Mathias, I like the dark shot more because it shows less background. Less background means less things in view to distract from the subject in the foreground. Having a more blurred background can also help to reduce distraction. A longer focal length gives bigger backgrounds in relation to the foreground. Anyway I don't have budget for much, so I'll have to be smart about choosing a less distracting background, and zoom in and step back to have better separation and isolation. I wish people would be a bit more precise. For dynamic range sensor size does NOT matter, photosite size and signal processing does. As I've learned from others. Chill out, it is not the end of the world. I think most of you can save up for more/better glass and camera's, you're not shackled to what 'you' have chosen in the past. Maybe we're a bit upset because we believed and followed other people's advice, and are now discovering that it was not the whole story? No worries be happy with what you have. MF appears to become a new hype, and I'm sure Fuijfilm and Pentax love it. But like Mathias has shown for a fraction of the price of new MF camera you can enjoy MF lenses on a FF camera you already have. Will it be 100% the same? - no, if only for the reason for more glass and different photosite sizes (DR). Will it be very close, yes. Sony A7RII - 42MP - 4.51 µ / pixel DR 12.69 EV Pentax 645Z - 51MP - 5.31 µ / pixel DR 13.11 EV Thanks for the worthwhile discussion, it is tricky stuff and I can use the practice :D
  3. I hope the GH5 can make it's photo and video look organic or video like. Like Ken and other say both have their uses! It would be nice to dial in any look one likes in camera, and shoot as you envision it right on the SD card, for a fast workflow. Custom LUT profile! For the times I want flexibility, I want a clean robust raw recording to massage and tune later on. My question is, will the GH5 offer a more clean, flexible and robust recording then the GH4? To measure this I think an external recorder and RAW is needed to really see what comes out of the HDMI, which I assume will offer the highest bitrate 10 bit data signal. For the run and gunner in me I also like to know how good the 10 bit 400Mb files are, the highest quality internal recording setting. Recording the best signal goes together with the best settings. Lenses and light are also key, so comparing to other brands should ideally be done using the same glass for comparing colour rendition for instance. For the sharpness setting, can we have something like "Off to 10", the minus numbers make no sense to me. Or does it actually mean blur?
  4. Because it is perceived as detail. Seeing 4k on a big screen is still a novelty. People are fascinated by it, like under a spell, or hypnotized. The sharpened image makes for a hyper real world, where there is more contrast then in the real world, rendering everything easier to recognise. Having this super vision may give the viewer an elevated sense of security and control. People see contrast. More contrast makes discerning easy. Only the smarter people recognise subtle nuance and detail. Lower IQ people only recognise easy to identify, contrasty, things. Thank you for the question, it moved me to think
  5. I think it's the compression that reduces the colours recorded, like PNG that assembles a small 256 colour pallet out of the wide 32M colours. My question is now at what image procession stage the colour pallet is reduced. In other words does the HDMI truely have 10bit UNCOMPRESSED. An external RAW recorder should be able to record the full rich colour pallet, organic noise and without the blocking and banding. I think the 400mbit data is very much needed to record the 10bit level of detail. Also a nice article about compression and Vlog: https://www.provideocoalition.com/v-log-l-on-the-gh4-don-t-panic/
  6. Looks very nice, the word flawless comes to mind. Using the full DR, SMOOTH roll off. Without the overly contrasty amateur look. Great stuff. However it was all shot during overcast days, in other words reduced DR light levels. So my challenge to James Miller and others is to make something silky smooth like this with a full sun. Thank you!
  7. Apparently a modified cineV was used; I wonder what the settings actually were. To me the DR of the scene does not look like much, allowing for a higher then normal ISO/gain setting, which in turn lifts the shadows, which maybe lead to less blocking/ more shadow detail. What do you think?
  8. I think this scene has too much added contrast. I hope TCS can make the raw footage available, so we can actually see what the camera can do / has done.
  9. Do you need to ask??? - Sure! Can I ask for some moire sensitive patterns? Some automatic refocussing? I must say that your GH5 footage is the most inspiring. Thank you for shooting it, and sharing the source files too!
  10. Can someone with a GH5 test the AF?
  11. if you already have vignetting on the GH3, I expect fast moving vignetting with the IBIS of the GH5 - It would be a feature to offer a variable crop mode on the GH5, to allow IBIS without vignetting.
  12. Ok, at the moment I've arrived at the Sony KD-49XD8099 It looks like it ticks all the boxes, accept it's a bit over budget ~900 €. As a bonus a few more inches, and H265 decoding! Apparently the 43" model has a VA panel; even though on Sony's website both panels are listed to have "Triluminos™ Display". http://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model-display/a20c636 shows what panel each display has. The Samsung KS8000 has a VA panel = instant disqualification. I'll look into the hisense. http://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/6f565f4 Sorry, non bueno, because it's a VA panel.

  14. Hi, I'm saving up for a G85, and with that I'm looking for a 4k screen. The screen is going to be used as a monitor for my pc. I like to have 40" +. My priorities are: 1) viewing angle 2) colour accuracy 3) NON flickering when set to low brightness 4) latency 5) HDR ready My budget hovers about € 700. Any recommendations? - Thanks!

  16. I think Panasonic could/should change the focussing for video. In photo mode a little focus wiggle at the end is fine. But for video I think with the DFD they should skip the focus confirmation rocking. This is so distracting. Without this confirmation focus racking at the end I think with DFD the camera would be most of the time in focus. If it is not in focus the continues DFD AF 's second metering should be bang on because the focus is already close to where it needs to be. This all I think is a matter of software/ firmware, or am I thinking to simply?
  17. Matt is checking out the banding in the highlights, but I noticed the lack of detail is much more severe in the shadows, due to compression. It is interesting to see how much compression and bit depth does to an image.
  18. According to DXO, the DR on the GH4 is just over 12 @iso 200, 7,66 @6400. On the GX80: very nearly the same. On the D500 it's 12,5 @200 - 8,8@6400 - 7,82@12800 (+1 stop). The A7sII gives: 12,66@200 - 10,24@6400 - 7,73@51200 (+3 stops) The rumour is +1 stop low light, but one can see that as merely offering a higher iso selection option, just applying gain and reducing DR, and not improving the noise. From the past, I expect no miracles in iso and DR, but just a very little improvement.
  19. I cannot wait to hear what the G80 / G85 will have, and cost...
  20. Question: Could 10 bit video also be used for the 4k photo feature? Personally I'm looking forward to a G8, with IBIS.
  21. Interesting discovery! What I notice is the colour in the back ground. Checking the colours in a photo editor, I see the following values: top left photo: topside back ground: R 176 - G 180 - B 176 lower side back ground: R 188 - G 198 - B 198 top right photo: topside back ground: R 177 - G 183 - B 177 lower side back ground: R 196 - G 204 - B 204 lower left photo: topside back ground: R 165 - G 166 - B 169 lower side back ground: R 186 - G 192 - B 203 lower right photo: topside back ground: R 175 - G 175 - B 177 lower side back ground: R 192 - G 198 - B 208 If I imagine a flat white back ground, I like the top skin colours a bit too green and warm, and the lower ones much too purple. When I adjust the white balance for the top left face, I can get a very pleasing result. Adjusting the WB on the others I can have good result too. Maybe, to make things comparable, record using the same manual WB settings? Maybe let the talent hold a colour checker, to measure the differences in the colour profiles, and see what has shifted where?
  22. From a youtuber / journalism / film making perspective I think the following features would yield the most IQ progress: - Global shutter, - 4k 60p - 4k 10bit 422, 200Mbit recording - Full sensor read out downscaled to 4k - NX1 level of focussing + tracking. - Auto iso in manual mode - + 1 stop in DR and iso. - 5x IBIS would be nice too. I like the idea of an oversized and/or multi aspect sensor. A cinema lens set would be cool too. Great to see so many responses here. I wonder if Panasonic employees actually read along.
  23. Can there be a movie without political messages? The 'global warming' and hate 'white men', as well as 'do not use resources' etc memes are destroying my enjoyment of extremely well crafted pieces of art.
  24. I think the BBC could have handled, and can still handle the matter very differently. The idea of having no options is often a very convenient excuse to execute an unpopular policy. It's a BBC failure if they noticed a problem a long time ago, and the only 'solution' was to give a person a thread, applying more pressure /stress, instead of looking into the work situation the BBC created and presumably allowed to go on.I assume that Clarkson does not erupts into acts of aggression in a normal social situations. So it would be interesting to me to hear what the previous situation was, and what problems the BBC recognised, and what they did to remedy the situation apart from dealing Clarkson a final warning.
