  1. Hey Guys,

    i need a new camera.

Sold my a7s because of colors and handling.

Now i want a bad ass stills camera that does good video as well.

No need for awesome 4k yet because im an 50/60p shooter. (working a lot with slow mo)

For serious work i use my bmmcc.

    I think my options are:

D750 - but the succsessor is around the corner?

D500 - you guys don liked it that much for video

M5 - we will see how good the 1080p will be

    Any other impressions?

    Dont like the m43 suff.

I will wait after Photokina maybe we will see a surprise from Nikon, but i don´t think so

Budged is around 2000€ for the body.

    Any suggestions?

    Cheers

Also i wont buy into a dead camera system :D

  2. Im looking for top stills camera but with also good video.

i think the D750 would fit in but dont want to buy a almost replaced camera...

Were is focus peaking? I dont know how to work without it anymore :D

I left sony for colors and handling... It just dont felt right to me.

Seems like no real option for me at the moment, 1dx II ist too expensive.

  3. Hey Guys,

there is a big price drop on amzon.com for the d750.

No drop in Germany, but seems out of stock... 1-3 months shipping time.

The past showed a 2 year cycle for a camera refresh, maybe we see 5d mark IV competitor at photokina.

    What specs do you expect?

  4. For me as 50/50 Stills/Video it looks like good deal... I sold my A7s and i´m thinking about to get a mark VI.

For me its the Colors, they look pleasing out of the box, how the mark III renders light feels completely different to Sony.

I never used DPAF but just imagine to put in on my Ronin and stop think about focus (more or less) is truely awesome.

For only video shooters go and get a video camera guys...

If i shoot something more important such an interview i will grab my bmmcc.

Whats my alternative ? a d750 without 4k and DPAF.

I think the mark IV will be a work horse for guys like me.

    PS. sorry for my englisch.

    @sqm

What's in your hackingtosh exactly? i5 or i7? either way, it's probably like 4 generations newer than the Xeon E5462 in the Mac Pro 3.1. That makes quite a difference in new instructions, optimisations, etc.

    Its a i5 4670k clocked at 3,9ghz, 16gb ram and a Gtx 850

Great Maschine but like you said i want a native mac...

Seems like i have to save to get a decent imac or something.

    Thanks :)

  6. That's a bargain.  The RAM alone is almost worth that much.
I still have the very same MacPro (bought it new back in 2008) and considered upgrading to a new iMac, but installed El Capitan and switched from FCP7 to FCPX.

El Capitan runs flawlessly and FCPX is much faster than FCP7.  I don't work with 4K footage, but I'm editing a video with 5 layers on top of each other, including keying and my Mac has no problem playing this.
I guess 4K is a different story, so it depends on what you want to do, but for 400€ I wouldn't hesitate.

Thanks man, great to hear, diddnt bought it yet bust testing it, witch the internal hdd its slow as f*** i will check that with an SSD

You are better off getting the Mac Pro 4.1 and onwards. The 2009 4.1 model can take the parts all the way up to the 2012 model if you upgrade the firmware to 5.1. Lets you use faster ram and potentially two 6 core processors, which you can upgrade yourself and still has decent heft. I've seen single socket 2010 models for £350, I wouldnt go for less than a 2009 model.

Thanks, the 4.1 models here are between 900-1000€ single cpu :( the cpu ugrades are from 500-1000... so lets say i upgrad once a time, then i´ve paid 2000€ for that.

For that price i can get a realy decent imac..

Just looking for something that can handle my stuff for the next year until i can buy a big maschine.

I will edit HD and sometimes 4k, but the main thing would be grading in davinci.

I would love to get Andrews imac, but dont got the money yet.... Andrew if you read this, maybe a two months fee ? :d

    Thanks guys.

  7. Hey Guys,

I thinking about to get a 2,8 ghz 8core Mac Pro for around 500€ from a friend.

Ram Upgrade to 32gb and to plug my existing gtx 570 in it.

Do you think this could still be a workhorse for editing and gradin?

I got a 4ghz quad, 16gb ram hackintosch, the power is enogh for my work, but i dont trust the hacked system.

  8. Yes, of course. But if you spread the 256 shades too far to the shadows and highlights, few are left for the midtones, where the action is, usually. Log profiles work with 10-bit (1024 shades) or raw. Even then, grading for 8-bit (i.e. Vimeo) means crushing blacks and sacrificing highlight detail for a better image, and in most cases the results will look like autumn leaves in the end ...

And: does 'grading' really imply excessive tone-remapping? HDR? Squeezing 15 stops into an 8-bit image at any costs? Many succeeded in color correcting threadbare consumer video before. Of footage that was much worse than that of the A7s. Very few, on the other hand, can present beautiful material from SLog-recordings. See what Mr. Sudhakaran, seller of the Wolfcrow guide, has to show. Does this convince you?

thanks for your suggestion :) youre right, his stuff looks poor..

    1. Use Slog2 and "de-log" it as much as possible with camera settings: use Pro color mode, add some saturation, shooting +2 over (set top right dial to +2).
    2. Don't use AWB- carefully set it manually. Do tests to understand how it will look in post vs. making judgments based on the camera displays, especially for skintones.
    3. A simple curve in your NLE will make the footage look pretty good right away if using 1-2 above (basically grab a point about 1/4 from the bottom and pull down slightly, sometimes also pull up around 1/2-1/4 from the top).
    4. For indoor/darker scenes try Cine1 or Cine4, Pro color, shoot at proper exposure (not over or under- set top right dial to '0').
    5. The Sony SELP18-200 is a great R&G all around lens. Better than Canon IS, decent autofocus, sharp, good color, great range. Canon 24-105 F4 also works pretty good. The 24-70 F2.8 II is sharper and faster, but no IS.

thanks jcs, i will test the slog -  de-log settings.

Did i miss something, isnt the exp dial only availible in auto iso mode?

Do you know a good source for the up and downsides of the different cine modes? i dont want to pester you guys with all the questions :)

    Cheers

  9. I watched the wolfcrow guide, learned many things especially the idea of setting the zebras to 70 and use spotmetering to place the skintones between 60-70 ire is great..

But its just a  slog exposure guide.

So slog isnt great for lowlight, what PP should is use instead and why ?

General wich PP for wich situation?

Autumn leaves is great, pleasing skintones and rich color in my opinion but it feels like there is less room to grade (correct me if im wrong).

I got the tokina 28-70 atx pro, the first ageneux designed edition... great lens but almost double the weight of the camera...Im looking for something small and lightweight for travel videos or similar.

  10. I would love too see an a7s guide from Andrew (or maybe someone else).

Picture Profiles, best native run n gun lenses with IS, wich exposure style? ETTR? or 2 or 3 stops over?

I would love to have one source for all information to master the a7s :d

Is it too late for that? in mind that the mkii is on the way.

    Cheers

  11. Wow, when Sony said they were targeting high end consumer level imaging products, they weren't kidding.  Most of my canon glass is gone.  The most expensive one left is the 70-200 mk2...  I should sell it soon.  Canon is dead in the water unless they can pull a rabbit out of their bottoms.  Their products are going to be worth less (or is that "worthless" hahahahah).  I wonder what the low light ability is for the A7RII.

wonder about the dynamic range too, hope as good as the a7s
