Some like the Olympus 12mm F2.0 have a mechanical mode, you pull back the focus ring to engage the gears.
A linear focus travel is something mirrorless manufacturers really need to start giving us, as a menu option.
And on future high end lenses they should also consider a switch which engages hard stops when in linear focus travel mode.
The current non-linear fly by wire system that's become so common is total nonsense really. Should never have been designed that way.

lt's keep this nice and friendly guys!

in answer to your innital question -

this is one of the reasons I don't like full frame as you do end up having to stop down to f4 - f5.6 range in general to make it match the dof of apsc / 4 perf 35mm film cameras etc .
I prefer to push a lens into its sweet spot of artistic look ....full wide open or just one stop down from there thats where I find the magic of a lens is looks wise...not at clinically perfect f5.6 - at which all lens are pretty good.

So stopped down to f5.6 in a low light situation is not so good as you either add more lights to the scene/ location (if you artistically can do that without altering the look too much )

or you increase the iso ,

I dont ever like to go over 800 iso on my Panasonics , I shoot f2 in low light as thats just enough dof without it getting silly narrow .

Thats why my Canons are only used for stills every now and then  and I shoot everything on micro 4/3 with speedboosters.
I prefer a smaller sensor not full frame.

JazzBox got a reaction from Julian in Gear Upgrade: Buy Canon 70D or more lenses for t3i?
    I had a T3i and I changed it for a 70D. Same image quality.

I didn't know EOSHD: then I read an Andrew's article about the G6, I bought it and IMMEDIATELY I knew that it was sooooo better then the Canon!
Why? 60p for slow motion, focus peaking, freedom to use old Canon lenses (and all the lenses you want) that you can't use on new Canon cameras.

After a week I sold all my Canon stuff, I bought some old Canon FD lenses and I had all the features I expected from my Canon. Funny that with 7DII those feature still miss!

If you don't want to sell the T3i for a G6 (of for a GH4) just take it and don't "upgrade" to the 70D, because it's not an upgrade.

    p.s.: here Andrew's article: http://www.eoshd.com/2013/07/panasonic-g6-review-the-gh2-redux/

    I like it!
But I prefer to work with Panasonic G6 over a 5D MkIII 95% of the times. It's a matter of taste, of course there is not a perfect camera that fit all works.
Last week I worked with a Canon 60D because the DOP that called me has that and did not want to use my camera. Other times I worked with a 5DMkII and MkIII, I had a T3i and a 70D...
I admit I like Canon's menu better then Panasonic, but I like Panasonic image better then Canon because it's sharper and 60p in 1080 is something I use often.
With Panasonic I have a better quality in handheld shots thanks to the smaller body, I can use lot of lenses (FD are superb)... I have the EVF and the focus peaking... it's something I cannot work without.

I really like the way ML opens up possibilities on Canon, even if it is not very comfortable to work with in situation where you are in hurry: 5D MkIII's RAW is probably one of the best image quality under 5000$, but - apart I prefer a more S35like look - it's too tricky for me to work with ML.

What I dislike about Canon's philosophy is the way they pretend not to know what ML can do on their cameras.

They clearly consider their DSLR just photo camera and want you buy a 10.000$ device for video.
It's offending, because they started a revolution and now they act as they did not know it: â€‹it does bother me their way to ignore how 95% of people work today. Just that :)

Francis Ford Coppola liked the GH2 best in the Zacuto shootout. Are some subjective opinions more important than others in the opinion soup? I do believe they are.

Fair enough! Now let's get back to talking about why there is no high spec video on Canon cameras under $5000.

Magic Lantern is the only reason that is keeping me working with the 5d  at the moment, I enjoy fiddling with raw, although is tiring and takes a lot of space, but the results are still worth it.
The 5d it's quite a bulky camera, not easy to take it around with you all the time, I would love to have something light that fits in my pocket.
I was thinking to get the panasonic GX7 when I get some money.
    Ciao ;)

Sergio Leone was doing Techniscope 2 perf on Spherical lenses back in the 1960s - poor mans anamorphic - this is just the modern verion of that .
Its a common process going right back to the first digital films , even the stuff shot on the Thompson Viper by Fincher like Zodiac 10 years ago was 2.40 extract ..... just Fincher is pushing it to the limits with 6K and the stabalistion wiggle room it gives him

if you read the article it says they used 17" monitors to pull focus as they shot fully wide open !! - I bet that was a nightmare for the focus pullers the Dragon sensor is 34mm ,  its wider than a regular Epic sensor so an even narrower DOF !! they had to use Leicas as the rear element only just covered the sensor , as Zeiss Master Primes did not....

Fincher does like to push the new stuff to the limit!

If Canon announced that they were withdrawing from the enthusiast stills camera market, you'd be surprised. It's a pretty big market. But withdraw from the enthusiast video market they almost certainly have at the moment, whether they meant to do or not.

there is not much differance in image quality between the T3I and the  70D both are apsc sensor

so its not a ugrade getting the 70d

I would get a Panasonic g6 or gx7 huge improvement in image quaility and peaking and a superb evf

or just keep your T3I and get some more lenses with the money you have allocated

You must have very low confidence in your own ability to come out with this stuff.

My clients don't come to me because of my secret tools. They come to me because I put much emphasis into the ideas and for my very stylised, visual style. They come to me for MY vision and how I apply that vision. My tool selection is just an ingredient of that vision.

People who work with me share information, talk to each other, borrow stuff, debate, exchange skills, ask for advice - because we are collaborators who have strengths and weaknesses, and we help each other to make better stuff. This is simple, basic networking - you never know who you will need in future!

I have no issues writing a blog post telling the whole wide world of amateurs and professionals about my entire music video production structure - from style to logistics. I'll be happy sharing because they will never have the same vision as me, and most importantly they may have something to share too which I can learn from and apply.

The secret sauce is your very self. Your ideas, your style, your personality, your skill, your results - it is this that clients buy. Have confidence in this and what everyone else is doing doesn't matter.

If nobody shared, nobody cared ;)

Maybe not on EosHD but they do on EOSHD.

Who are "They"? It's such a gross simplification you're trying to pass off as a relevant argument. The audience at EOSHD is mostly advanced amateur and pro. Enthusiasts with high knowledge and those looking to increase that knowledge. The advanced amateur filmmakers I know from my 4 years of running EOSHD just don't do what you're describing. They read reviews first and research the options. They choose the right tool for the job and one that matches their existing lenses. And nobody with high knowledge spending $3000 on a camera simply walks into a shop and blindly buys what the sales assistant recommends. You're talking about a specific type of customer with LOW knowledge who doesn't have a clue and doesn't really know the options inside out like we do... they don't know that Samsung currently have a better APS-C sensor and that Sony currently have better image quality. A Canon 60D is enough for them and it's cheaper, and it feels familiar ergonomically in the 10 seconds they have to try the cameras in the shop, so they buy it. This is the person you're describing and it's completely irrelevant to the topic you're applying it to.

Actually many of the general consumers are buying Sony at the moment especially the younger demographics, as they have always used LCDs to compose an image, and the optical viewfinder seems unnatural to them.

Big film studios have used a Panasonic. There have been major box office hits shot on the GH2. As for colour science, Panasonic VariCam - I say no more.
The big accessory companies in the US like Zacuto and the smaller more specialist ones like Hot Rod Cameras are big Panasonic supporters and these guys are as much a part of the big film studio food chain as top directors and DPs. Their stuff is used all the time in major film and TV productions. If pros never used Panasonic Micro Four Thirds, Hot Rod wouldn't be doing PL adapters for them.

So what? I'm not talking about that market! I'm talking about the high knowledge enthusiast crowd which is where Canon are failing right now.

And this crowd contains a lot of "influencers". The herd follow the shepherd eventually.

For the record iMacs are not overpriced. 5K screen for a start. Samsung TVs are not overpriced. They have a full range of models right down to bargain prices and the price / performance ratio is excellent on almost all of them.

    Well that's a great attitude.

    Says it all really
