    Ignore the a7 (i.e the a7 mk1).

As the a7S mk1, a7R mk2, & a7S mk2 are the only a7 series camera to seriously consider for film.

I think it's a nice camera but even if the price il low it doesn't have any real strong feature

  2. A few weeks ago I asked about the sony a7 because I've sold my 7d and I wanted to buy something "smaller"

After a few days of research I can't decide what to buy anymore.

My budget is limited and there are too many cameras to choose from.

tI do mainly stills but I enjoy making personal video projects, I would love to buy the fuji xt-10 but videos sucks...right? It's an amazing camera but in my mind it's a bit limited.

The a6000 is great for both stills & video and that's what I'm leaning to, the price it's not that high, xavcs, EVF...but I don't like the body that much, I can live with that tho.

The a7 is ok but from what I've seen the a6000 is better and cheaper :/

The olympus em-10 II  seems good but it's a m4/3, It has amazing ibis, great body.

Finally the gx85 , everyone loves it I know...but I don't like panasonic cameras for stills, even for video I prefer sony, yes it has 4k and ibis but I've already owned a g6 and a gx7 and I can tell you that it's a nono for me.

I know that the latest fuji is good for video too but I can't afford it, anyone has tried the xt10?

Probably I'm gonna end up picking the a6000, I've a 30mm 1.4 from sigma (canon mount) that i'd love to use it with my next body

Paired with the right lens there shouldnt be too much difference between m43 and FF, but everyone as he likes :) I just would not invest that money into an a7 body if i knew that i also want to use it a lot for video.

Mostly photography, that's why I'm interested in the A7 and that's why I'm still using a canon!

Yet if you have 600 bucks to spend for a body, I would go the GX85 route and use the rest (maybe plus a little add) for a cheap focal reducer et voila, you got your background blurs while having a better camera for video.

The gx85 does not have any microphone input, I already owned a panasonic g6 and I really don't like the m4/3 system, it has a nice ibis but that's it.

  5. I've seen that the first a7 body only can be found for like 600€ used, the price is really low for a full frame body, is it any good? I was thinking about buying this sony for both videos and stills using only old prime lenses

  6. I haven't always enjoyed the colours I've seen from the Panasonics either.

There's a recent thread on EOSHD about applying a LUT to GH4 footage - which did wonders to the colours! I don't own any Panasonic camera myself, but I really enjoyed the GH4 colours after that LUT was applied - so I recommend you to search for that thread and find out if it works on G6 as well.

Seems like I cannot apply that to my g6 footage due to the inability of my panasonic to play with advanced picture profiles, thank you anyway!

After I bought my G6 (thanks to Andrew's article on this blog) I regret all the Canon I bought :)
I sold that 70D and all the Canon digital lenses, so I had some money to buy the GH4.

I'm totally in love with Panasonic G6, I use it as second unit with GH4 and they can match really well.
Since I don't use 4k that much, the only drawback is the lack of live-HDMI: with an external monitor you can check only the shoots you made, but you can't monitor what you're doing.

Anyway the EVF is GREAT (try to do that with a Canon!), the dynamic range and the final quality are stellar and in my opinion they smoke easily any non-hacked Canon DSLR.

With G6 is also very simple to achieve a natural cinematic look in camera: just use "Natural" profile with contrast -3, saturation all the way down and sharpness -2/-3.

With Canon FD lenses and Zeiss M42 lenses you can shoot really filmic things.

I would never return to Canon DSLR, at least until they remain in 2009 ;)

Totally agree, I love the g6 and I'm not gonna sell it, I can't go back completely, I really can't stand the aliasing of canon cameras for example.

I'll try your setting, right now I'm testing standard with -2-2-2-2

If colour is your only problem then you're in luck my friend. http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/8438-pleasing-neutralising-panasonic-luts/ It was created by colour matching GH4/GX7 footage to Canon footage of the same scene and colour charts.

    I'll try that, thank you!

  7. So It's been a few weeks since I've got my panasonic g6, I really love all the features of this camera like 50p, touchscreen, peaking, evf, tons od detail, almost no moire and aliasing and I think it's a huge upgrade over my past canon cameras ( I had a t2i and a 5d2 over the past years) but I still regret my purchase.

Maybe it's just because I'm new to this camera but I cannot achive the same feel that I had with my t2i, mostly I can't get the righ colors, everything looks more "digital" and also pdc it's a pain with my cheap f/1.8 - f/2.8 glasses...

I also have an old 5d (the first model) for shooting stills and I'm really tempted to sell it and buy something like a 7d just to have the ability to shoot canon like video, It's a really strange feeling because I started hating canon recently and that's why I jumped on the g6 :/

    am I the only one?

  8. I agree with everything that Mattias says (although I've never used the rx100 series) :)

The LX-100 OIS is really quite good, unlike my Panasonic 35-100/2.8 which is a great lens for still but for video is full of jitter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1sNjEfD3GE

I used to own the E-M5 I (and E-P5) and really loved the colours and shooting video in portrait situations with shallow depth of field.  What I didn't like was how the image got all blocky when there was movement or if the shot was detailed/wide.  I really liked the camera for stills too, so I recently sold my Gx7 to replace it with a EM-5 II to get the better stability with longer lenses and the stills features that I missed.  The video isn't as good on the E-M5 II compared to Panasonic, but I will mostly be using it for close-ups and shallow depth of field and my LX-100 for the wider/detailed/4k shots.

As for flicker, I owned the E-M5 I, and shot both in Europe and in Canada and adjusted the shutter from 1/50 to 1/60 depending.  I really didn't notice any flicker, except sometimes a "skip" or "flash" that randomly happened in the video sometimes.  I saw this with both my E-M5 and E-P5 and other users on the OMD video facebook page said that they experienced the same and said that maybe it was interference from the IBIS?

I'm not really sure how much the whole 25/50 fps and 30/60 fps issue is.   I bought an LX-100 in Europe for around €700, but would have preferred to get one for $600 in the US.  I'm glad the E-M5 II is a world camera (PAL/NTSC), but I'm not sure how bad the flicker problem is?  What do people do with flicker when shooting 24fps?  I always just default to 25 fps in PAL-land as it is close enough?

Here are some stills showing some good video from the E-M5 I and some bad video:

Maybe the problem is that the em5 shoot 1080i and not 1080p?

Btw right now there's an olympus offer where the give you 100€ is you buy a em10 so I could buy that camera for 350€, it has the same processor of the em1, it should be a bit better than the em5.

  9. The LX100 is not very jittery at all, it's pretty smooth. Not Em5 smooth but smooth.

You could look at the rx100ii, it's a good camcorder .

You can somewhat avoid flicker by changing the shutterspeed.

Since the em5 is 300-350 dollars you could probably buy a used one really cheap and just try. Because it is a nice camera. Colors are awesome .

Yep that's the point, the lx100 it's about double the price, the em5 would be a really cheap body that I'm going to upgrade at the end of the year or in early 2016...maybe I'll try it, if  30p it's really that annoying i could sell it

  10. I used an E-m5 for a while. Loved pretty much everything about but that 30p drove me crazy.

I would look at the LX100 or Sony RX100 instead.

I don't really like having a fixed lens, the lx100 seems to have a very jittery IBIS (still awesome though, it's my second choice right now), the rx100 III is good but at that price point l would buy the LX100 even if it's a bit bigger.

The 30p is really that bad? I think that if there's a way to avoid lights flickering I could live with that, If I had the money I would love to buy the em5 II D:

  11. Hi everyone!

I know that nobody cares but I decided that I'll buy an OMD em5 or 10

Basically I want the stabilizer, I want to shoot a video while travelling and I can't bring with me tripods or sliders, I'm not a pro so I think that I don't need 4k or awesome codecs, probably I'm going to regret not having 60p for slowmo but I'll try to achive something decent with twixtor.

My only question now is "having only 30p is going to give me flickering lights?" I live in europe...is there any workaround? Because that would be a really big problem...

  12. I love my silver GX7+20mm but I'm ready to let it go in favour of the GX8, or the G7, or the GM5.

It takes wonderful images, great camera.

Things to note: The EVF in my opinion is also horrible. I notice tearing and rainbowy stutter on it that isn't enjoyable to use. and I never bothered with the in body stabiliser much :)

May I ask you why you wan't to change the gx7?

  13. Or just stop down, it gets crazy soft.

I love your youtube channel :o

I've seen some stuff from the lx100 4k downscaled to 1080p and i was like :Q_ Is the dynamic range the same as the gh4?

  14. If you start caring more about getting nice shots than the camera, I think you'll be fine no matter what.

I know that the camera is just a tool but that doesn't mean that is not important, I just want to buy something that suits my needs, I'll be fine also with an old 550d but now that I can decide what to buy I want to take the right decision because I can't afford to change gear every week

  15. I'm back!

I've found another deal on the gx7 but at the same time I started thinking about the lx100 and now I'm really confused : /

The lx100 has a great lens and the range it's quite good to me, but it's also more expensive...it has 4k and in body stabilization (IBS is something that i really care about), moire is more visible but not that much, I'm a little bit concerned about dynamic range and the focus ring (bad experience with the fuji x100).

On the other hand the gx7 is cheaper but just add the cost of 20mm and we are above the lx100 price. It seems to be better in low light but IBIS works only for stills, no 4k. I'll be able to use some legacy lens ( I love using this lens with smoooooth focus ring) but this could be also a problem if I want to travel light.

I really can't decide, the IBIS of the lx100+4k+compact size+great lens it's taking over but I'm afraid I'll regret not been able to use old lenses...

  16. Thanks to everyone, today I decided to buy the GX7 but the offer in the store was gone...I'll wait till next week for the amazon prime day and then I'll probably pick the a5100 because right now is cheaper.

  17. Yep, it's a great camera. In fact, I find myself bringing it with me for photos more than the GH4 because it's so tiny. The EVF is nice, but is really contrasty for some reason- you don't a fully accurate picture but I don't mind so much and it's better than no EVF. a5100 is also supposedly a very nice cam- not sure about still quality but it has a bigger sensor, slightly better low-light and slightly better AF,  but worse color (subjective). As far as lenses go, you have more options available for the GX7 in the lower price range, but Sony has a lot more high-end options (which probably isn't relevant to you at the moment).

GX8 will very likely be announced next week so prices could drop even further. I always recommend renting a camera before buying it- lensrentals.com is very good if you're in the US.

The bigger sensor of the a5100 is the thing that is holding me from buying the GX7

  18. I recently sold a fuji x100 and I loved the small form factor...now I want to buy something that it's roughly the same size but with a small budget.

I've found a cheap gx7, at the same price i can get the Sony a5100, my only requests are 60p and good stills.

I don't need the mic input but the evf on the gx7 is very usefull, is really comparable to the gh3? What about the a5100?
