This guy charges stupid money for things that you can find cheaper.

So, yes you can find them for £500, but certainly not from this guy.

Just because one person charges extortionate prices for things, doesn't mean that that is the price they go for or the price you should pay.

The lens the OP is talking about is not worth over £1K & only a fool would buy one for that price - there are cheaper & better anamorphics out there.

What other sharp 1.5x single focus options would you recommend in the ~£500 range? Specifics please.

The Samsung NX1's menus are superb. Very feature packed camera yet I'm never lost on page 9 of 12

Best camera menu I've seen hands down, couldn't agree more. They nailed it first time out. Why is this so hard to get right for everyone else? For example I like Olympus cameras, but their menus are a horror show.

In addition they seem to acknowledge the necessity to keep up with the 4K, 6K, and 8K race but that sometimes the preferable image is of a much lower resolution and they spend time trying to achieve that by softening the image up etc.

I watched the whole thing and didn't catch any of them saying that.

  4. Focus was maintained because I'm using the FM as the focusing device. In theory, this should make any zoom parfocal so long as infinity doesn't change for the focal range of the zoom.

That's awesome. I have an FM and love it, but have only put primes behind it. Thanks for the info. Time to play!

  5. Cineon then film contrast goves more control

But .fc is good too and .vs is less contrast version of .fc

I guess it means not using a print lut on the end with these other two, just curves and grade. I notice if the stack doesn't start with a cineon conversion it gets too crunchy with a print lut on the end.

I would learn to go slog to cineon, then start coloring with the filmstock I like (I like 250d and 200t and 500t a lot – 50d is a little too wild in the blues) – and then once that is good, go off to a Film Print – 2383, 2393, or their custom Film Contrast 1 or Visioncolor or even Fuji print.  And that gets you a good look.

Ed, question for you as a visioncolor power user: do you find much use for the _FC or _VIS versions of the stocks, or do you primarily use _CIN, grade then pass that to the output stock? So far I haven't found a workflow where I use the _FC or _VIS luts and was just curious.

  7. Can I get aboard that too? :d

The key, in terms of narrative, is to justify the bizarre ratio inside your plot or concept, not loosely but in a way that the audience thinks it couldn't have been done any other way.

About the number of views for the music video, Taylor Swift's piece has 6 minutes while Avatar has 162, plus one is available for free online while the other people had to pay in order to watch, so I think these factors make a difference.

It's not that they accept it, it's more like they don't really care if it looks cool. The absolute majority of the audience (I'd risk 99% of it) doesn't have a clue of what the hell is anamorphic. People just want to enjoy it, not dissect it and analyze it. That's what WE do (and love), so when we see something that brings both elements together (entertainment and technical finesse), we flip about it.

Now... I don't even remember why I started to write that.

Tito, I pretty much agree with everything you said.

This is the aspect ratio I've decided to do for my next short. Wide is great! Oh and it's mobile platform only release!

Now that is too wide. Way too wide.

  8. Just judging by the interviews shot under the Coelux, it has really convincing color temperature. Those people look like they were recorded in sunlight. If it's portable, then it will shake up studio lighting in a big way.
