  1. try looking for one thats 'broken' with autofocus not working etc

I got one as a spare one very cheap that way as I will never use autofocus as I dont have any Nikon cameras.....£200 broken

I was wondering that the NIKON 28-70MM F2.8 IF ED would give me the equivalent of a 44 to 112mm equivalent on a super35 size sensor. I was looking for something a little bit wider, with an aperture of f/2.8. Do you have something else wider andy?

    Thanks.

  2. dont forget Nikon - the Nikon Nikkor 28mm AI-S is an 8 element lens and THE BEST lens Nikon ever made its almost distortion free!

    They also do a 24mm AI-S

If you waNt a great all in one lens - shoot almost an enrire movie on just one lens - then the NIKON 28-70MM F2.8 IF ED is THE KING !

This is without doubt a killer lens - everyone on this forum wants the - Cinematic Look - well shoot all day with this lens at f2.8 and you have it - Its has a look very similar to Arri Zeiss Master Primes......nuff said!!  get one!!

    Ok, thanks I'll take a look ;)

What do you think is a reasonable price for the NIKON 28-70MM F2.8 IF ED on eBay?

  3. yes you are looking in the right place

The Yashica ML 28mm f2.8 is a great lens and will match in with your ZEISS C/Y 50mm

PS Im also a huge fan of the Canon FD 28mm f2.8 - its very very good and very cheap - so if your camera will take FD lenses its also a very good lens

    Ok great, thanks Andy!

If we leave aside the fact that I wan't to match in with my Zeiss, what others options do I have for a wide lens at a reasonable price?

    Thanks.

  4. Hi, (sorry if I deviate a little bit)

So I am looking for a wide(ish) angle lens to match my Contax Carl Zeiss 50mm f1.7. I know there is the 28mm f2.8 or the 24mm from Zeiss but it's more money than I am willing to spend right now. I heard the Yashica ML are good but not all of them. Is the 28mm f2.8 good?

If there are other options out there, please let me know. A lens with an aperture of f2.8 would be a great!

    Thanks ;)

PS: I know Andy will find me the best lens possible :D

  5. I filmed a short documentary in the tramway last month, we send a mail for a permission to the company, they never answered so we just went for it. We where well prepared and everything went very well, we didn't had any major problem. The crew was small which made everything easier and faster. Be prepared and scout the places you are going to shoot in, so you can solve creative and technical problems before the shoot. Just try to be discret and to always have someone watching out for the police. ;)

  6. Perhaps now that the price has dropped it's getting used more. On sticks it wouldn't seem like much more production work than shooting ARRIRAW. Looking forward to a shootout between the ARRI 65, Sony F65, and Red Dragon to see how their latest color science compares (current top of the line 'true 4K' cinema cameras (more than 4K Bayer is needed to accurately capture 4K RGB)).

Yes that would be great! Is there any footage of the ALEXA 65 yet?

I do agree with you, the F65 has amazing colors, Winter Sleep was such a blast visually! (The movie is great, but clearly not for everyone.) I would like to see it more often used on feature films.

  7. Great list Andrew! Those are very good cameras with their pros and cons! The best camera will always be the one that suits you the best (your shooting style, etc...) or the camera that will help you achieve the best possible result for a specific project/job. One camera might not necessarily be the best camera for two different projects!

The 1DC seems to be a great camera and the best one for Andrew then so be it, get over it guys.

I myself am not very fond of the 1DC mainly because of the price but, but if Andrew found a reasonable price (5000 pounds) then I think it completely justifies the purchase.

    Cheers.

  8. Not sure which focal reducer you have but, the RJ has an infinity focus adjustment. I also have GX7 and Contax Zeiss 50mm f/1.7 with the same problem you have. RJ sent me this picture so that I can fix it. But I just didn't have time to do it. Just be careful though; mark the current position and rotate it in small increments until you are satisfied.

In my case, I can focus to infinity but I just have to dial it back a bit. This is to fix it so that when the focus in at infinity sign, it is actually focused to infinity.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for answer, I have the Mitakon focal reducer it's seems to have the same screw, I'll try it later and see if it works.

  9. Hi

So I recently bought a Contax Zeiss 50mm f/1,7 for my Gx7. I bought an adapter to fit my focal reducer (C/Y to EOS), everything is working well but I just can't focus to infinity with apertures like f/1.7, f/2.8, even f/5, it only seems to focus to infinity at f/16, I don't know if this is normal (maybe it's a stupid question), It maybe has something to do with the adapter or the focal reducer  I don't know. I did put a small piece of paper between the lens and the adapter for it to be tight.

So could you please enlighten me on what is going on?

    Thanks.

  10. Last week I realized that I had learned a lot of things this year, but specially that I still have to learn a lot of things! This website and this forum has been a huge help for me, it's a very good community, and lots of people willing to share their knowledge.

I would like to focus more on the content of my work than the technical part, I tend to focus to much on what camera and lens I am using rather than what I am shooting. And don't have to forget that they are just tools to support the story and the content.

And I hope to get accepted in the film school I am applying to. :)

  11. Not very exciting I am afraid, not only are they late to the party (is "better late than never" really a reason to be excited?) there is also no chance that Canon will offer anything with specs that will cannibalize C series sales......

So we will get a better late than never Canon mirrorless with underwhelming/outdated specs.

Well let's just wait and see who knows... It's christmas anything could happen :)

  12. They are solid, I just bought a couple of them, but they were a little bit tight when I had to screw them to my Canon EF- micro 4/3 focal reducer, so i just I had to sand them a little bit and then it was good. I also had to put a small piece of paper between the lens and the adapter for it to be tight. I don't know if this has something to do with it but the lens seems to have a problem with focusing to infinity, this has maybe something to do with the adapter I don't really know :/

I do have another problem though, I am using a Mitakon focal reducer and the image is a bit soft when shooting a f/16 and other apertures I don't know if this is normal. The lens I am shooting with is the Contax Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f/1.7

  13. Ok thank you, I have two and they are both very tight, I am going to try to sand one of them a little a see what happens. Right now I can't buy anything else unfortunately I am on a trip, but could you recommend me a brand for the c/y-eos adapter andy?

    Thanks.

  14. Hi,

I just purchased my Gx7 with a Focal reducer (canon EF to MFT) and then I bought an adapter (C/Y to Eos) for my Zeiss glass but when I mount the lens to the Focal reducer it's very tight, I don't know if it is normal and I am scared of breaking something.

Have you had this problem? Will the metal wear off with time or should I just buy another adapter?

    Thanks.

  15. We have to remember that film schools give you opportunities and an education, You will know people there that will probably work with you for the rest of your life, It's more about the people you meet! You might afterwards work with one of your teachers on his next movie, or not, going to film school doesn't mean you WILL have a job, but it will certainly help a lot!

It's true that doing everything by yourself is what a lot of people recommend but we have to remember that those guys are geniuses (unless you consider yourself as good as Tarantino, Kurosawa, Nolan etc...) Doing everything by yourself is hard, and it depends on what your are aiming at!

PS: here in France we don't pay film schools, la Fémis and Louis Lumiere are almost free and they are one of the best schools in the world. (la Femis is number 5 worldwide, students have won many prizes in Cannes and other big festivals) The difference is that we have to pass a very hard exam in the beginning which is very selective. So money is not a problem, you have to earn your eduction not pay it!
