Clayton Moore reacted to Cinegain in Andrew has been spot on about Canon
Not really, that's more a thing for NAB and Photokina I guess. But just in general Canon kind of seems behind if you're looking at the competition in the same categories, so it couldn't hurt them to break radio silence, perhaps giving Canon users a little glimp of what's in store for them with a little teaser of some sorts.

    Great write-up!

I couldn't agree more! To me that's the essence of this camera.

Great tip, thanks! Hadn't thought of that!

First, I too think it looks sharp. :-)

The hard zoom in definitely, and I'm pretty sure there's a couple of frames at the beginning of the track back that would fail (hard to be definitive on Youtube), and the BBC would potentially fail you on the speed of the dolly back itself. Yep, its that tough.
They let a ton of micro-skew go in the 5D2 days, but have tightened up recently. If you want to know why they, Discovery, Fox and others are so vigilant on skew and micro-shake its because it messes with the layers of compression they need to get it to people's homes.

Now is your film fine for a web customer?  Sure! Looks really nice.
But for me, the A7s is only a specialty camera right now UNLESS I invested the time to learn its quirks.

    Hope that made sense.

You won't regret it. As long as you can control the light on your set the GH4 will give you great images, and the first time you drop 4K on to a 1080 timeline and reframe it you'll be sold. Plus all the other niceties and fantastic button ergonomics. Even the 96frame is not useless.

Very well written Andrew and complete.

This is not the first time Ive read about people using the GH4 as B-roll for the F55.  I know someone who did that and it was for SONY who hired him to do an F55 video.  For me its about over-all GH4 ergonomics and the flexibility 4k gives me in editing. I Love the A7s image but Id rather wait for the FS7, which I have the cash for, but Im not ready to move there just yet.  Meanwhile the GH4 will be my 4k training ground.  Its the best value to feature ratio Ive ever seen.

It's a sexy looking camera that's for sure.

I expect the C300 Mark II to be 10 bit 422, with 4k and 120fps at 1080p. I would also hope that the C100 would receive a firmware update after the C300 Mk2 release to enable 4k (but at 8 bit only, HDMI out maybe).

This hope is rather pointless right now - my business is saving for the new FS7 which looks to be an outstanding product, a great investment for the long term. Paired with an A7S, it's all systems go (further!).  B)

About EOSHD opinion: I'm also 34 and I prefer Optical Viewfinder much more for photo. I don't understand why you always stress talk about EVF/LCD, it doesn't matter for video. DSLR can have good video too, as Nikon D810, only flip LCD is a must for video.

Thank you for your interview, it was interesting! Did you see DPreview interview?

DPreview: One thing we know from our own testing is that Canon DSLR sensors can’t quite compete with some modern sensors from Sony in terms of dynamic range. How important to you is developing sensor technology?

Canon: We are very focused on getting the best image quality. I’m not sure what measurements you’re looking at but when it comes to dynamic range for example we consider image quality as a whole, from low to high ISO sensitivities and on balance we consider our sensors to be the best.

My ideal camera is one that can take a picture in any environment from complete darkness to the brightest sunshine.

It looks like Canon is satisfied with their product completely!

I think we all know what the deal is.  You have said it before, so theres no confusion:   Video sucess on dslrs was an accidental success for canon.  A nice suprise at the extra interest and sales.  So they created the spin off cinima eos lin to carry the pro video forward and charge as much as the market will pay for it.   The dslrs then just continue to be 100% stills orientated.  The 7d mk1 and mk2 are mainly for sport protographers.  Where the crop is an advantage (as long as the sensor is higher resolution) and high frame rate (with good autofocus) is of prime importance.  The video is just an added extra.  Its just there if they happen to need it.  But kept at consumer level quality, with all video improvments like better autofucus squarely in the consumer arena.

What a couple of rubes!  (The Canon reps, I mean.) That was fucking pathetic!

Quote: "The application of the technology is still good, it’s still simple, but the specification is looking ‘lesser’ compared to the competition at the same price.
John: No! I don’t agree with that."

Grade A bullshit right there.  A7S, GH4, Blackmagic all destroy the Canon offerings for video.

I think this interview says a great deal about what Canon thinks of the DSLR video user.  Thank you Andrew, great job!

Someone I know was hired to shoot a video for SONY using the F55.  He used a GH4 for B-Roll and said when the whole thing was down scaled to HD it was freeking amazing.  Said both he and SONY were very pleased.  Said that the GH4 when the in camera 4k gets downscaled to HD 1920x1080, it makes by far the best looking HD he has ever shot using an affordable camera.  Even better he says then the BMCC 2.5k. Since most of us wont actually deliver much of anything to clients in actual 4k.  Sounds like a prretty good deal to me.

Not sure where to start here honestly.  Both new cameras look pretty cool.  BUT here is the problem they have if they dont offer some promissed updates to exsisting cameras.  How confident can buyers of the new stuff be that they will be fully supported with the new products they buy, if customers of existing products get very little in that regard.
