    I wonder what the story is here.  Does that mean it needs to be restarted to create a new file, or it will overheat if run for more than 10 minutes?  10 minutes is too short.

    Yes, sharpness absolutely can be quantified.  Image quality is a vague term that doesn't really mean anything from person to person.

I think a lot more has been made of replacing glass because of the higher resolution sensor than needs to be.  The D500 has the same pixel density as the D850, but I don't hear the same arguments.  In general, a higher resolution sensor will make any glass look sharper.  You can see that by looking at DXOmark tests.  Higher quality glass will just look even better.

    The a9 looks pretty clean.  So does the GH5.  The problem is everyone in the studio shot looks like they have sunburn with the a9.  Also when you look at the brush, it looks like it has some artifacting with the a9, likes it's being oversharpened.

    From everything I've seen, it's not a Sony sensor.  It's Nikon's design, manufactured by a third party (not Sony).

    I expect rolling shutter to not match the GH5.  The GH5 is 20MP, and the D850 is a massive 46MP.  That's a lot of data to read.

    I'm not seeing the aliasing you are talking about.  What are you looking at?

    Actually, Nikon designed their own sensor for the D850.  It is unknown at this point who actually builds it for them.

I wasn't expecting GH5 level of video features on the D850.  Let's face it, the GH5 is nothing short of a technological marvel.  However, I was happy to see "no crop" 4K on the D850.  Hallelujah!  Canon appears to purposely cripple their DSLRs for video.  Crop on the 5D Mk IV 4K.  No 4K at all on the brand new 6D Mk II.  At least Nikon is finally pushing ahead.  Focus peaking and slo-mo on 1080p is nice, although it would be nice to have that on 4K.  Nikon's codec is very good, and the colors are good.  I'm anxious to see some samples.

    I worked for a union company.  I can give you a whole list of reasons why it is a bad thing.  The biggest is you can't fire people who don't work.  The union will protect them every time.

    Why is a corporate monopoly bad?  Unions are nothing more than labor monopolies.

    The saturation is up so high in the grade to fix the skin tones, the sky has now gone bluish.

     

    I love the dynamic range.  It really is good, but trying to band aid the Sony colors seems like an exercise in futility.

This story has made me think a lot about an article that came out recently on the connection between creative genius and mental illness. Lucas and Vonnegut were participants in the study, among others. The full paper has yet to come out but the article is a preview of her research. Robin Williams seems to fit right in, very sad.

    I've seen this relationship for a long time.  I've dated some actresses. :)   It's a bit of a sad reality, actually.

  12. It's funny.  I was not a fan of him in Mork and Mindy, although I know a lot of people who loved the show,  But he grew on me as time went on, until I was totally hooked on his his work and looked for it.  It's sad to see him go.

  13. I'm just looking at the A7S image by itself and there I see no yellowish tint. And it seems you're grasping at straws here. First you emphasized on the A7S skin tones, and when that didn't work out you had to cherry pick from the scene.

    That's enough personal attacks for me.  You are now on my forum ignore list.  Don't bother responding, because I won't see it.

That's because you are comparing it to the GH4, which is also a bit yellowish, although not as much.  Compare it to a Nikon, and look at her neck.  Also look at the girl to the left, too.  If you look at the paint mixing bowl, the brush has almost no color with the a7S.  At the paint mixing platter, the yellow next to the red looks the same as the yellow next to the teal for the a7S.  For other cameras, they are not the same yellow.  The one next to the teal is a darker shade with a bit more green.  Also the green fur over the Asian girl's head has a bluish cast.  It should be green.

Dpreview has a comparison tool for comparing camera output for raw, JPG, and video.  The a7S colors are off for JPG's and video, especially the skin tones, which have a yellowish cast.  Other colors are off, too, but not in a consistent way where you could just adjust white balance.  When looking at the a7S raw images, though, miraculously, the a7S colors look fine!  They compare very well with Nikon and Canon.  That says to me that Sony's JPG and video color processing stinks.

Did some comparisons with the a7S and D610 on the dpreview site, this time for stills.  The a7S JPG's have similar color problems as the video.  Surprisingly, when I changed the format to raw, the a7S color problems went away.  Skin tones looked fine, and other colors looked good, too  I think it boils down to Sony's JPG and video color processing stinks.

  17. The a7s is interesting to an amateur because of the shoot in any light ability.  But we amateurs are also notorious for not always having external stabilization and shooting hand held.  That doesn't seem like a good idea with aht a7s... unless you go into APS-C mode.

    I also think the a7S is out for an amateur, because most amateurs do not have the time or skill to fix the colors.  In fact, even though the pros are excited by the a7S, it doesn't seem like they have a handle on fixing the colors either, at least for daytime shots.  The Nikon colors are good right out of the box.
