drewski310 got a reaction from Art V. in Iscorama and Contax Zeiss
    Hello,
Long time lurker, finally decided to register to learn and contribute.  I've been doing a little testing with some of my Contax Zeiss glass as a taking lens to my Iscorama.  Previously, I've only used a Helios 44-2.  The Zeiss is noticeably sharper and seems to work well.  Sorry, no lens flares here - just a quick test of overall sharpness and bokeh.

I tried using a Contax Zeiss 45mm f2.8 pancake, which made a a nice, compact setup, but it unfortunately wasn't as sharp and I'd hoped for.

Top frame is SLR Magic (from a sample video).  Bottom frame is from my Iscorama.  Perfectly oval bokeh in both examples.  If I didn't know which is which, I would say the Iscorama looks more "videoish" because of the sharpness (which is more a function of the taking lens IMHO).

There's no holy grail lens, some may be better than others. This whole "filmic" thing is stale...what you're noticing is how this lens resolves detail off the sensor. No matter how it's sliced or diced in camera you're gonna get back what is captured. I think what you're expecting is totally wrong. From what I saw so far this lens will capture the very best as well as the very worst of what the sensor is capable of. To me thats a great lens. No doubt this seems to be a quality set of glass and I bet if it were the baby Hawks you'd be saying the same thing. "It's not filmic"...well wrong. Actually what you mean to say is "cinematic" and there's a lot more that goes with that than a lens can offer. Just my 2 cents, I think it's unfair to blame to a lens when in all actuality you should be blaming the sensor or one better, just blame yourself.

Almost everything that could go wrong on a shoot DID go wrong on this one. Without going into details, I feel like the video is 60% of what it could have been. I had a MoVI that went down on the very first day of shooting, which forced me to rely on our backup brushless "FauxVI"  Alexmos based gimbal. Also had a lot of MoVI handheld shots planned, but those had to be cut obviously.  The prototype GH4's had some quirks that were challenging to deal with but I'm sure they are solved by now with firmware update. All in all I was really impressed by the image coming out of the GH4. We posted this in front of a 60-some inch 4k monitor and the shots looked stunning to me.
And responding to someone previously, yes all 8 lenses and two bodies absolutely did fit handily in my carryon backpack, minus the ocotcopter of course! ;0)

I sent mine into Rich and had him do the mod and smooth out the focus. Mine was the same way and id hear the stoppers clicking it didnt sound very nice. Now its a treat to focus...I just need a follow focus setup for it

Well I traded in my 45mm pancake to KEH for the 60mm makro.  So hopefully I will get some pretty good results with the 60mm setup.

drewski310 reacted to Sebastien Farges in One Week with SLR Magic anamorphot (OM-D & Sony A7) !!! :)
Hi everybody and anamorphic lovers !
Here is my 1st movie with the upcoming SLR Magic anamorphot 1.33X - 50 anamorphic lens on OM-D & Sony A7 !!! :)

It's now since one week that I own the upcoming new anamorphic lens from SLR Magic, the anamorphot 1.33X - 50.
It's a compact and light 1.33X anamorphic lens, working from 40mm on full frame and 20mm on M43 systems.
It has the particularity of having a focus ring for close focus, it's very convenient because you can use it without diopters. Another difference seems to be the usuability of shooting at fast apertures. I even did a fast test at T0.95 on the SLR Magic 25mm and the image was still usable ! More tests to come.
I've used two cameras with two different lenses on this movie.
First the OM-D OM-5 from Olympus. Despite it's not so good video codec, this camera has what the other cameras don't have (yet) : an incredible 5 axis stabilization system. The addition of the Lumix 20mm with the SLR Magic anamorphot on the OM-D make quite the perfect combo. The problem that I still have with the love-able OM-D is finding the best image mode. I'm usually using the "Art3" mode Pale&Light Color (like in this movie), or sometimes "Art4" mode Light tone mode.
Second the new Sony A7, the first full frame hybrid camera. For me this camera is very lovable too. For the first time it's offering the same flexibility than M43 systems : putting thousand third part lenses (such as Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Contax, Leica, M39, M42, Cine lenses, and so on....). And enjoy those lenses in full frame.
The 50$ Nikon 50mm f1.8 is a cheap and very good pancake lens. I've put on the Sony A7 with a Novoflex E to Nikon mount adapter. The result with the SLR Anamorphot is very good too, and there is less distortion on the edges than the Lumix 20mm on the OM-D. It's real obvious when you watch the difference on the flares from the two lenses.
Using the diopters on the SLR Magic anamorphot improve the sharpness of the image. The 0.33X achromatic diopter from SLR Magic seems good and offer more sharpness, but it is not indispensable for close focus, because of the close up focus ring of the lens. The 1.3X gives the possibility to film closer to the subject, and the 3X I'm using too... The three diopters of the movie are reavealing tremendous flares, as you can see at the end of the "Crêpes scene".
Thank you for watching ! Any comment are welcome ! :)

This combo seems to be the sharpest, even at f2.8.  I measured the actual squeeze of my Iscorama and it's 1.424, which works out to 2.53:1

The taking lens was the SLR Magic 35mm T1.4 Cine Mark II for both of these, used at F2.8, the camera was a GH3.

A live acoustic video, on this one I've intentionally gone for a look with flares:

Some night street footage, at F2.8 it's a bit tricky when there's not much street lighting, I may well re-edit this video, maybe to include more footage.

This was a 1.5x oval aperture and the iscorama 36 in very low light:-

not really a good indicator of sharpness but it illustrates the more pronounced 2x ovals

being a m4/3 user you have the advantage of being able to use the speed booster to get away from the loss of lens speed.
