JeremyDulac got a reaction from Sage in GH5 to Alexa Conversion
Png does seem to help a lot with these posts.
Your skintones are second to none with your lut. No one else is doing what you are with the subtractive nature of GHa. The smoothness and gradation of color is totally amazing!
Always look forward to your updates!

I was wondering how that one would look with V2; its quite stunning as the sun hits the scene!
Did you try .png? Curious if the colorspace will be handled differently for uploads
I am a big fan of the natural color handling of plain GHa, but the contrast in the film look with the sun is great. And my god, skintones
Btw, I took a little step towards something big this week, I know you'll love it.

A Couple more. First with just GHa and second with my film look. Superb highlight roll off!!
Side note - My god does the contrast get messed up with direct photo uploads!! Color looks SO faded compared to the actual stills. I gotta get a flickr account lol.

Human + Skyline, one of my favorites with this color science
(120fps, 8-bit no less)

Hey thanks! Yep, i used your olpf suggestion, loving the effect. I agree, that blue green separation along the skyline is fantastic.

Its looking slick! Is there a little bit of olpf texture in there?
I always liked the way foliage and blue sits in with skintone with Alexa

Here are a couple quick stills from some current work - shooting Vlog. First still is just with Gha with some grain, second with a film print lut and the gamma converted to Cineon. Loving this GHa lut!!

Thanks Jeremy!
On their own, as a conversion to VLog, they are really accurate. Looking at the point cloud throughout the color space, they're near perfect.
But it is my impression that Vlog is superior for locking in skintone nuances and absolute smoothness. This is essentially because combining two really intricate conversions magnifies translation error. This doesn't apply to the simpler PREs (i.e. Premiere 10bit VLog and ProRes), because of their uniformity.

Great stuff, Alex! As i am working my way through testing I am wondering - Are the 'PRE' files good enough now that using HLG is just as good as VLog straight out of camera?

@dxotic One neat thing that I geek out over, is that it is so smooth -

And the PREs are so much more accurate (8 bit/Premiere/photo styles) -

Its the conversion process itself that is entirely new; its pretty impressive

Some recent tests with my new anamorphic adapter and Vlog. Really loving the color separation the lut gives. A few frames arent in focus...still practicing this anamorphic thing

I think it is really a subjective/preference topic because I love the look of 16mm. I can understand not loving it if you prefer a clean look. I personally am partial to a clean image and like something a bit more imperfect and organic. There is just something about grain that looks so good to me and makes an image come alive.
But hey, to each their own!

Pretty crazy. When I was young we busted our ass to try and get rid of Grain, and now every wants to add it!

Looks a bit like old 16mm footage with all that grain. Like it!
Color separation indeed is great using V-log. With HLG it's kinda lacking...

This is actually really impressive. Top work!
How does the GH5 footage feel to grade once converted? I presume it wouldn't handle quite as nice as actual Alexa footage?

Working on something now that I think you're going to like ; )

That checks out;
When closely matching contrast and saturation between the two, the brighter greens, darker blues, and smoother skin tone from shadow to light really stand out here.

Hey Jeremy; It can be a matter of taste, as technically there is no correct way at the moment. If above 4500, it is closer to daylight, and below, tungsten. And each tube will differ in it's spectrum, so the most fitting conversion may vary from it's proximity to one end or the other. Go with what feels most right ; )

Ok, so I have been running some tests under fluorescent lighting that I am pretty sure is somewhere around 4800-5200(not sure because it is ceiling light at work). I have some stills here with the GHa tungsten then daylight applied and I am curious what everyone thinks looks best? @Sage Do you recommend using Tungsten for fluorescent or daylight? I also attached my film print graded version. I am really liking the way the GHa lut is grading! The highlight rolloff really is fantastic.

Yes, all exposure adjustments should follow the conversion. Technically speaking, exposing to the right will maximize signal to noise ratio, resulting in less noise. With native color, there is a penalty to ettr because rolloff is problematic. With GHa, there is no rolloff penalty, so you can center the choice around protecting highlights as need be. Practically speaking, it will interact with GHa Soft for a different starting look. An underexposed image will be more saturated, and ettr will be less saturated and cleaner. Overall, the Main and Soft profiles were made for middle gray at 40 IRE.
