The vision color ones (the ones made specifically for Sony) are pretty good I'm finding but I prefer FilmConvert. Also I have made a LUT for Panasonic cameras that incidentally works quite nicely with this slog setup

Cheers! <Aybe you want to share it :D?

  2. Quick question. Is anyone getting noisy shadows with these recommended settings. I did a quick check as I have a shoot tomorrow and using the settings on an A7s2 I can see a lot of noise in the viewfinder and monitor. Haven't had the time to check the stuff on a computer properly but just wanted to put this out there.

In a quiet room, automatic gain control ramps the gain up so high you can hear a pin drop, so it amplifies the sound of the IBIS operating to a dim hum. Using a proper plugin rode mic or in a normal shooting environment you can't hear it.

Wait..this has a socket to plug in a mic?

  4. Have used the OSMO with the X3 so can just tell you about the operational bit and not the image quality.

It's pretty much good to go out of the box. Of course it's best you customize the settings like the the sensitivity/deadband etc as per your liking. It's worked better with iPhones than android devices with us, but did crash a lot in 4K (DCI not UHD). I believe a firmware upgrade has increased the reliability and battery life. IT works well for following, orbiting and panning. The panning does feel "electronic" but it's good. Mind you it's quite light so keeping your horizon level can be a bit of a challenge at times. I think the z-axis arm should solve this.

Thanks! I'm somewhat familiar with the approach but never fully quite grasped the use and effectiveness of proxy files. Is editing the proxy also editing the original media? Wouldn't it take up more space or am I getting that wrong?

One would usually create proxy files (lower res and bitrate than original or editable codec) as a lot of systems earlier on couldn't handle big files. You probably still  need to while shooting RAW. Creating proxies do take up additional space! When you edit proxies you don't edit the original media. The proxies proveide a reference to the original media which you reconnect/relink before your final export, grading etc.

I assume they would rather have control of the entire device (stabilizer/software/camera) -- than deal with myriad customer service problems caused by different camera/lens combinations, software settings and operator errors.

At the same time, in spite of having complete control, I've read a number of posts regarding performance issues with the OSMO.

At least DJI can attempt to address those problems knowing that the hardware in the field that's been sold is uniform.

The OSMO has a lot of issues. Seems to have gotten better over time. Things like 4K would crash it a lot. We ended up using it on 1080p. It would crash most Android devices too.. And sometimes the stuttering was really really bad.

The 4k image is nice, and hard to beat at any price range, but it's the overheating. I've never had my camera overheat, even under stress testing, so good copies do exist, but I would be dishonest to suggest that the chance of getting a good one is even close to acceptable. There are tricks you can do with ram heatsinks, and similar, especially if you can cope with the articulating screen losing it's articulation, but how many times are you going to tolerate it overheating at a wedding? It depends I guess on how you use it - if it's strictly a camera where it's nice if it gets something, but you never rely on it to get the product absolutely perfect, then why not, but if you think that it could let you down even once, well, it's up to you!

Hmm...I guess I'll pass. Unless a firmware update fixes this issue. I usually shoot in warm weather

Well, on the ones I have it won't work precisely, and it's noisy as hell (I use them for manual lenses, I'm faster and more precise than the screwdriver), the 135 and 85 have the worst color fringing wide open I've ever seen, older lenses don't have it that pronounced, maybe it's a digital thing... Btw,these lenses are the dark age for nikon.

Hmm. I thought there was a lotta love for the Nikon "Bourne" Zooms.

    For what use?

I'm a user, and the only use i can reccomend it over any other camera is if you want a small interchangable lens camera that will take great shots no matter what you are photographing, holding its own in sports, landscapes, portraits etc - though a compromise against larger cameras or cameras specializing in a narrower area of use. I couldn't reccomend it over others as a video camera, unless 4k is REALLY important to you, and even then, it has it's issues. It's also the best emount crop camera, if you're into vintage glass photography, it's a seriously good camera.

    tltr: Photography, yes, video, no

Well sadly, video. I shoot weddings, events, low end corporate stuff where I don't necessarily rent gear. Even when I do it's usually an A7s or A7s II so I even though the new Panasonic GX8x looks tasty the A6300 should match well with the other Sonys. 4K is definitely important. (More for cropping in than delivery). This will also serve as a back-up to the Sony bodies that I rent.

Also since my trusty 600D also stops recording occasionally with magic lantern, I would prefer something a bit reliable. Love the "Canon" colours but I've started enjoying the Sony's too. In my line of work people don't care about colour accuracy that much.

Not too bothered about rolling shutter.

You can't fully correct bad white balance.

If it has a red/blue/green cast, you might dial back that colour to correct any white in the scene, but completely screw up the skintones, scenery etc.

It's a major, major issue... AWB, WB settings, manually dialing in temps... It is so hit and miss and i'm certain that is the cause of all of this.

The only time I find the camera (A7s) tends to get it right is shooting at night... Maybe the engineers tailored the WB for the ultra low light shooting?

That's why I try and just correct the skin tones as much as possible.

  11. When I screw up the exposure big time (under) and then need to boost it in post I rely on Neat Video. Definitely not the best way to do it. As Ebrahim says becomes super plasticky. In some cases it's very useful. Totally depends from situation to situation.

  12. Andy Lee and other owners of the Nikon "Bourne" lenses. How well does the Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8 match with the 28-70 and 80-200? Also, is the bourse lens the 80-200 AF-D or 80-200 AF-S. TIA

  13. One of the reasons I've struggled so much with this. Being physically unfit takes a larger toll than it does for most others. Then back to bad habits, sodas, junk. One of the reasons I've decided to get things in order this year. I love the art and science of filmmaking, but I love myself more.
