  1. I would order 82mm .. specially if you are budget constrained. There are plenty of of high quality lenses with 82mm filter thread. Like the image stablized Tamron 24-70mm 2.8.
  2. D16 + micro 4/3.. that would be the thing. Speed booster to it and voila. In the age of these big companies with their unfair and greedy practises we need to support the allternatives even harder. Consider that when we manage to keep the alternative players alive.. What can or could they bring to us when they are no longer economically so constrained. The second or third product.
  3. I hope the best possible (optically) reasonably priced wide-lens will be made available to this system.    That lens is offcourse the Carl Zeiss 21mm 2.8  http://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Camera-Lens-Database/Carl-Zeiss/Carl-Zeiss-Distagon-2.8-21mm-ZF2-Nikon/(camera)/485   Then one would have a new kind of Landscape wonder combo.    Allso if Zeiss Decides to design the next OTUS as say a 24mm instead of 35mm. The new 55mm f1.4 OTUS is apparently amazing glass so one can only hope similiar performance in wider form.
  4. In the days .. I spent two years choosing a 24" monitor that would replace my 19 Eizo. Then I finally settled for a HP-LP2475W.. I'm still using it.   These days there are alot of good models to choose from. Even Asus has PRO-Graphics focused product.   USB3-hub and all. http://www.asus.com/Monitors_Projectors/PA279Q True Color, Absolute Fidelity: Professional 27” Pre-calibrated AH-IPS 16:9 2560 x 1440 WQHD LED-backlit Monitor   @Axel It's interesting product segment. There are multiple models based on the same panel. AOC is just one of them and aparently the more expensive LG model might be bit better.   This one. http://www.lg.com/uk/monitors/lg-29EA93
  5.   For RAW .. you will need alot of HHD*s .. so you need a large case as well.    Swap the case for Fractal Design XL 2 http://www.fractal-design.com/?view=product&category=2&prod=111   Swap the cooler for a cheaper non Zalman. Zalman uses non sntandard fans and is very expensive.  Look out for Noctua.    You can cut down on price by choosing a different graphics card by getting a GTX 670 .. Still quite powerfull enough solution. Specially if you plan on running Premiere. http://www.silentpcreview.com/ASUS_GeForce_GTX_670 Like that Asus pretty much the best  GTX670 available.    Try to choose another memory kit .. A kit that does not have that long heatsinks. The heatsink like that are useless and may interfere with some heatsinks. Buy a standard kit of 2x8GB .. so later on you can add it up to 32GB. Dont buy windows 7 HOME premium. IT's ram support is limited to pathetic 24GB .. WIndows 7 Pro is the one to choose.    If possible get a Westerndigital 3/4 TB Red harddisks. they are efficient, silent and resonably priced.    When Choosing a monitor make sure it has a IPS panel .. or a more recent IPS tech panel.  A good monitor might be The AOC 29" ultrawide .. or the LG derivate of same kind. all these 29" ultriwide models use the same LG panel.   Here's a review of the AOC. Notice it can be calibrated to have very good colors.  http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/aoc-q2963pm-ultra-wide-review,3591.html     I personally opted to get 32GB of ram two kits of the same type.. This way I was guranteed to have same memory from the start.  A reasonable choise for a system disk is the Westerndigital's latest Velociraptor line. I have a 500GB one for software and an older 150GB for the OS. SSD's are nice but pricey.
  6. I would not write this off just yet. It could very well be that the new Sandisk cards will enable write speeds in the range of 120MB/s.. such speeds are nothing to be upset about. Some one needs to be the initial tester tho. How about Andrew.. If you arrange a donation campaing I'm willing to throw 1-2 euros towards you buying one 128GB one and testing it in a 5DMK III ;)   A little snippet ppl may have missed .. from Sandisk anouncement:   Increased Speeds Across the Product Line To coincide with the launch of the 256GB SanDisk Extreme Pro CompactFlash card, SanDisk is increasing the speed across each capacity of the SanDisk Extreme Pro CompactFlash line. The other SanDisk Extreme Pro CompactFlash cards, available in capacities of 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB, will now feature read speeds of up to 160MB/s4 and write speeds of up to 150MB/s4, as well as the same VPG as the 256GB card.   Oh and they announced a first ever 450MB/s card btw. (Apparently this is what Adrew was excited about)   http://***URL removed***/news/2013/09/13/sandisk-introduces-first-cfast-2-0-memory-card?utm_campaign=internal-link&utm_source=news-list&utm_medium=text&ref=title_0_3
  7. The phone has two "new" NSA features the motion sensing and finger print reader. Even tho those features can be used to benefit the user as well. The sensor size is a needed improvement even tho a modest one. 8 Mpix is plenty enough.   The pureview camera in the Nokia 808 will likely still be the absolute king in image quality even tho processing might pull the image quality above it in special situations from the Nokia 1020.   Then again Nokia phones are no longer owned by Nokia so I will never buy one again. I'm from Finland and I certainly dont take it lightly when it comes to Microsoft phones and Elop the MS agent.  This iphone 5s might be my next phone.   That would be my first proper smart phone. ;)
  8. Kineraw mini at say 2500 dollars .. would be a good price point. When considering the 4K path .. I understand that you need the 290$ module for that. Then later the ~3300$ box   Some calculations .. I could not help my self :D     BMCC - 1780 euros Chinese 12v 6800mah LI-ION battery - 25  euros each x 2 = 50 1TB Samsung 840 EVO - 500 euros   =  ~  2330 euros.  (get's you 12bit at good enough resolution RAW + Resolve 9 ) Canon mount or passive m3/4..    Only problems in my book are the multiplier and large size along the poor form factor.     BMPC  880 euros Chinese Nikon battery 4 euros a piece.  x 6 =  24 euros Speed booster when available  550 euros Sigma 17-35mm  1.8   750 euros. 3 x 64GB Sandisk Extreme pro = abouts  360 euros.   total ~2564 euros..
  9. I'm all good about Zacuto doing great products and having financial success.. But like CRFilms wrote I could only ever consider a Zacuto product if I found one from the used market. This situation mayby different later on the line. If financials improve in the future I will gladly pay premium for optimal gear. Naturally even then it's a consideration about price and performance. Brands have very little meaning.. Functionality and quality at a reasonable price is key.
  10.     Interesting. My WD*s have worked like a charm and I have plenty of them from different eras. I might consider Samsung as well. But .. my guts tells me that even tho they are not that practical the tape solutions are the best and most secure method one can easily obtain from the market at a reasonable cost.  I how ever have not owned any kind of tape based storage solution
  11. Komputerbay 256GB CF card ... 1200x   137MB write speed tested.    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EM9I6II/&tag=planet5d-20/ref=cm_sw_su_dp     Availability = non existent.    Sounds like the dream card for 5D Mark III raw recording.  BUT IT does not aparetly work.        http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=7801.0     Tested on 5D mkII, mkIII and 7D. The cards was tested to be compatible with magic lantern and canon firmware unlike the 1050x. Benchmarks show similar results as 32 or 64 gig 1000x. The cameras seem to be the limiting factor. When formatted as 256 gig via your computer or straight from the box, the cards will initially be seen as such by the camera. However, when you format the card in-camera, it will reduce its capacity to 128gig. Tested the 5dmkII for capacity test indicates it cannot record past 128gig on the card. (we recorded 116gig) For now only 2 card readers are confirmed and tested to be compatible, the lexar and transcend card readers. Other brands will only show the CF card as 132 gig only.
  12. Best disk money can buy is the Westerndigital 3TB Red atm.    -low power consumption -fast continous write speed -silent    It's such a shame that they havent launched the 4TB Red yet.    A USB 3 dock like Bruno suggested is a very good idea. The only problem I see with such approach is that the connectors may eventually brake down due to wear.    Another solution is a Large case with a lot of HHD slots then you keep the case open and just swap the cables when you need. (such is my workstation right now)
  13.   I watched this film that has been linked on these forums as well about the transition from film to digital. Key point there was that big studios pack a working reader + computer along the archival medias.    I've had poor quality CD-Rs brake in two years (my friends first ever music production batch). In the days of CDR-R's I personally used high quality CD-R's for my storage needs and those discs do still work. How ever I would never use DVD or Blueray disks for archival purposes. Unless it is a third medium beeing used along say tape and HHD's
  14. Finally one made by the chinese.  Price is much more reasonable.    Has anyone tested one out allready?   http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-5-EVF-HD-Electronic-ViewFinder-HDMI-LCD-Screen-With-F750-Battery-For-5D3-7D-/251318461720?pt=US_Viewfinders_Eyecups&hash=item3a83bf6518   YES i'm not a friend of those ~20X profit margins of Zacuto products  ;)
  15. According to the DXOmark.com .. the 100mm f2.8 L macro has much more Chromatic Aberration than the non L version.    100mm 2.8 L  http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Lenses/Camera-Lens-Database/Canon/EF100mm-f-2.8L-Macro-IS-USM/(camera)/795/(cameraname)/Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-III   100mm 2.8 non L http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Lenses/Camera-Lens-Database/Canon/EF100mm-f-2.8-USM-Macro/(camera)/795/(cameraname)/Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-III   The holy grail of image quality for me is the lack of chromatic aberration, low distortion and beatifull bokeh.  from that perpective the 60mm Coastal Optics macro is very much a dream lens. If only it was available for Canon fullframe. Aparently it has no chromatic aberration at all.   http://diglloyd.com/articles/CoastalOptics60f4/
  16. in my view the GOOD WAY is Staying humble, transparent to a point and open to dicussions. Open to all products without bias Clearly stating sponsorships Talking about personal preferences is not bad since one cannot after all own and use evertyhing Not whining or taking things personally. Dont be a control freak either. Not licking big companies behind as a default is good starting point.   Then again If one is open to all gear... the main focus in one's hobby and work is likely the gear. Is there time for anything else?
  17. Those lenses produce very nice quality. I specially like my lenses to me as minimal in Chromatic Aberration as possible. Those lenses seem to be very good in that regard.
  18.   What is this "Film" I hear from time to time. Is it a new RAW videocamera? .. is it made by some company named Kodak? Sounds interesting.. ;)
  19.   Plenty of truth there. 60D + editting software + spending time doing it. Learn! LEARN!  :D  I personally chose GH2 to get things started. The image quality after all is enough for a real film  if it comes to that .. even tho the GH 2 sucks with it's monitors ( my biggest gripe with it)
  20.   Sure is. I hope the project is a success. We need third parties that create new paradigms.
  21. When one thinks about the MK3.. and the reality of CF*s as of now. I actually came to the conclusion that the Black Magic cinema camera is a good buy .. since it's same price and uses SSD's (much cheaper than the CF*s, no need to play around with the KomputerBay lotto) and you get Davinci Resolve.    Blackmagic cinema cameras image is quite good when Andrew made the comparison bwtween MK3 and BMCC.    Getting the pocket cinema camera and speed booster  for Canon glass might be a good route. Then you are buying glass that can be used on Mark III and on Blackmagic Production camera and C100 and C300 etc etc later.
  22. Sony keeps owning with RX-line.. good stuff.
  23. Product feature request sent.    Do your part  :D
  24. Could very well be that Canon has pushed them to dropping it. Then again if user based asked for it in numbers they would have to bring it back. Simple as that.
