  1. Most shops around here in Sweden don't sell Sachtler, so I have no idea about how those perform. However, when I got my Manfrotto 503HDV head, I tried panning and tilting both 501 and 503 heads in the shop. The 503 felt much smoother and concise compared to the 501, which made my choice easy.

So, my advice is to try to find a shop where you can actually try them out. Then you can probably figure out if the difference is large enough for you to want to save a bit of money from your budget or not.

I do not know if this rule applies to both fluid and friction heads.... my cinema teacher said that before using the video tripod we should do some circular movement with it (60/120/more seconds, it depends how cold it is). so doing those movements its mechanics becomes warm and it is more fluid. this is because external temperature may be cold and the mechanics needs to be warmed. did you have warmed a little bit them before the try? maybe the 501 seemed less fluid because of those reasons.

  2. As far as I know ( i do  not claim to be an expert), a fluid head uses the flow of viscous fluid to smoothly control the rate of panning. As you turn (or tilt) the head, fluid is forced through an opening. The wider the opening (which is often adjustable) the less resistance on the movement.

With a friction head, resistance is determined by two washers (i think nylon usually) that can be compressed tighter together to create more (or less) resistance.  The use of solid friction makes the resistance much less smooth than a fluid head. This is why most serious video tripods use fluid heads. Friction heads are more commonly used in photography.

Personally I think if you are serious about video, you should't skimp on the tripod. It's something that is extremely important for quality camera movements, and even more important, they last a lot longer than a camera body.

thank you for your explanation! :) I'm going to spend part of my budget to buy the tripod really soon. I'm really in pain because I have found two options and I do not know which to choose. the first one is the Manfrotto 525MVB + 501HDV at 390 euros (used from a friend so I trust in the conditions). the second one is the Sachtler ACE 530 euros (new). If you can help me to choose I would be really grateful I think I'm going crazy! :D  thanks a lot!!  :)

    • Sachtler Ace M
    • Sachtler FSB 4

    Friction Heads

    • Manfrotto 701
    • Manfrotto 501
    • Manfrotto 502
    • Manfrotto 503
    • Manfrotto 504

Can you help me to make this list please?

I need to separate fluid heads from friction heads.

I will update the list with your info.

I wish to understand and clarify with your help which kind of video head are better... friction or fluid?

....and what is the mechanical difference can you post some example please? schemes?

Which are the best price/quality ratio tripods for both categories?

    Let's start to understand! :)

    Thanks for your help!!!! :)

  4. ok, solved. :)

    found here: http://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2711

then restarted the software and it worked.

    -----------------------

I see that I have some glitch, for example video thumbnails show ugly vertical black stripes. also on the timeline. any fix for that?

I also ask for a tip. I opened h.264 clip 1080p (shot wit EOS 550d). Audio and video have some playback problem. It's "slow" if you know what I mean (no fluid playback).

I believe the cause of this may be that the preview window that show the video is in HD. On premiere I can set the video quality but I cannot find the option here, do you know where is it please?

    thanks!

    edit.

  5. Resolve 10 has basic editing functionality in the edit tab - if you're doing basic in/out type edits I could see maybe using it to cut something for the sake of not having to go out to an NLE and back. But I think for most even somewhat complex jobs you'll probably still want to use Resolve in conjunction with a full NLE.

Blackmagic is clearly beefing up the editing abilities of Resolve, though.

    thanks for help. :)

NLE is a common editing software? what the acronym is for?

I have a problem maybe. I have opened Resolve 10 to try it for the first time but I had no luck.

I try to click on the tiny triangle to find my video content, but if I click on the triangle nothing happens. It does not show me anything like if C: where empty. Can you help me with this please?

    edit.

In addition I have another HDD drive (external drive), but it does not show me on the list as you can see in this picture.

  6. All that I know about this software is that it allow to edit RAW footage. For example can I edit the whole film with this software? I mean "doing everything" like in premiere? Adding transitions, cut, copy, paste pieces on the timeline? Adding audio tracks? I mean what I have on my PC installed now?  Can I tell that i's a free premiere alternative? Does it work with H.264?

I have a couple of candles preserved in my room somewhere for something special, is it the case to light them?  :)

    Thanks a lot! :)

  7. I really WISH to buy this camera, but the crop factor does not allow me to do it. it's just impossible.

What should I need for? spend how many money in new lens? which focal length?  I'm just a budget filmmaker student that wish to shot in RAW. which cheap fast lenses should I buy for this camera? This situation give me a BIG sense of frustration.

thanks help and sorry for this confidence.

  8. Sorry if my reply sounds rude: Sometimes, there's a point where people who haven't used the camera and don't understand the concept of a digital cinema camera versus a camcorder should just shut up.

You only get noise-free images from consumer and ENG cameras because they have built-in noise filtering algorithms that, in most cases, can't be turned off. Likewise, your consumer or ENG camera will algorithmically sharpen the image and punch the colors.

A cinema camera records an unprocessed image: without noise filtering, without sharpening, and with "dull" colors that optimally reproduce the sensor's dynamic range but don't optimally match the human eye. Noise filtering (if wanted), sharpening (if wanted) and color correction (absolutely necessary) must be done in postproduction.

Judging from the Vimeo videos shot with the Pocket that run in ungraded Cinema log, it seems as if this camera asks too much from most people who buy it. They will be better served with a G6 or GH3 - and I don't mean this pejoratively at all. I'm just tired of these misunderstandings.

It's as if we'd be on blog for audio production, and people would complain that the Korg synthesizer they just bought as an upgrade from their Casio keyboard has no built-in rhythm section and auto chords and no built-in speakers, and sounds dull over Mackie studio monitors. (In audio production, btw., the difference between consumer and semipro technology is no longer really a difference of price point. Video production now just catches up with something that has been the reality in audio production for more or less a decade.)

why should I just shut up? cant you just explain what people does not already know without hurting them?

  9. 1) BMPCC is newer than BMCC 2K, does it improve in some way right?

    2) at low light RAW shooting (1080p) which is better? and which is the most usable ISO for professional use during night shots on both?

    3) does BMPCC has image stabilization?

    4) which is the crop factor in both cameras?

    5) BMPCC is compatible with canon EF mounts and also with micro 4:3 lenses? I do not need adaptor rings?

    6) does BMPCC and BMCC works with adaptor rings for old vintage lenses (example M42)?

    7) does BMPCC and BMCC have cropmarks (like ML) or some solution to shoot 1:85:1 or 2:39:1?

    8) does its take photos?

    9) I have a canon 50mm 1.8, that would be my prime lens on APSC because it's cheap and has fast aperture: if I choose to buy a BMPCC which lens should I choose now?

    T.H.A.N.K.S. :)

  10. All depends of the money they want to invest and the kind of project, in audio equipment cheap never is good, i use Tascam and Rode so this what i recommend based on my experiences, of course there's more advanced equipment and from other maker.

    Basic:

-Zoom H4n or Tascam DR-100 MKII

    -Shotgun mic Rode NTG-2

    -Boom Pole or mic fishpole.

    -Shotgun Win protection.

    More advance equipment:

    -Tascam DR-680

    -Shotgun mic Rode NTG-3

When i need a lavalier i have the Sony UWP-V6.

    Cheers.

thanks. if I need to take dialogue which one of this microphones do I need and which tool? I need to take dialogue indoor and outdoor. and sometimes at a little bit of distance from actors.

    thanks! :)

  11. hello, I need help about which audio devices to buy for some friends. they need some devices to record the sound during shoots on short movies. I thought about a zoom h4n + 1 rode microphone, but which rode? and which would be the ideal audio gears to start taking sound on the film set? If you can give me an index I would be really grateful. Maybe they need something that I do not know.

    thanks bye!
