Im going to go out on a limb here and say that I don't think Canon "can" do any readout other than a crude 1:1 sensor readout and deBayer technique. We know that Sony has fully mastered 6k readout, deBayer image processing and seemless downsampling to 4k today. Sony Semiconductor WILL sell it if Canon wants to pay for it. Hell, Panasonic was only doing simple 1:1 readout in 4k too. They bite the bullet and buy Sony 1inch-type sensors and Sony IMX272 for their GH5 and BOOM! Now Panny has 6k/5k overnight with no problem!
I suspect Canon is WAY too proud to buy Sony 6k scaling engine or sensor readout patents.
So?....Canon is still stuck in 1:1 readout.
how about Fuji? did they buy that from Sony?

There's about 5 years of pent-up demand in Canon's fanbase for affordable 4K video with a decent spec.
So this is a right slap in the face whichever way you look at it.
An entry level camera is $350. This is $900.
Here's the main innovation - Canon has realised that the days of savvy customers carefully researching a camera and weighing up the pros and cons is long gone, what makes the big money is YouTube and celebrity stars with massive social media followings pushing products on their followers.
Canon just got the bigger picture, just not for semi or professional producers
in the total 4 billion online users, how many of them are actually viewing the videos in 4k?
in sites like eoshd, cinema5d, probably over 50%
but in reality, I would be so surprised to get a number over 3% who got 4k screen and enough computing power to actually play 4k
the truth is 4k is not the mainstream and will never be in the next 5 years, the bottle neck also includes the popular smartphone display resolutions and network bandwidth.
for an average user, M50 is acceptable camera and lenses from Canon are a lot cheaper. it's affordable and nothing serious
for people who is dealing with real customers, get the a6300, a6500, a7riii, a7sii, gh5 etc

Wow PM got the unbox
Have they FINALLY done it? 4K Canon M50 UNBOXING
it will still sell like a hotcake lol

Women will buy it.
It's small enough to fit in their handbag and very easy to use.
yea and thats why they make it white color too
M50 meant to be a simple camera for youtube vloggers not professionals, just look at the price tag and dials controls
and how many people are actually watching 4k in youtube anyway? I would be surprised to see over 5%... and I predict even 5 years later most people will still watch youtube in 1080p

Have you seen the video with Gordon Laing? This is even useless for vlogging in 1080p... they seriously need sensor stabilization... I mean, Fuji has come around and Canon is still playing the segmentation game. But the real ones to blame are the people that will still buy this crapgh.
no offense to Gordan Laing but he does have real shaky hands, i mean real shaky
1 minute ago, Inazuma said:Plenty of vloggers walk around with their cameras and hold stuff up in front of it or turn the camera around to look at points of interest
yes, thats the reason why they cannot stand Panasonic
even Casey got tired of that out of focus and going back to 6D
-
the crop thing like we all predicted, its around 2.4-2.56x before they finally revealed
the lack of DPAF is pretty bad, but still it would make good interviews at 4k resolutions
and yea the battery dropped 20% from M5/M6 I expected before it released but seriously this is an entry level camera
Honestly I am a bit disappointed about the lack of DPAF in 4k mode but afterall it's a solid release for $779, in fact some regions is selling this @ $700 body only
what I suggest to buyers is simple: for vlogging go with 1080p, for a bit serious projects shoot manually in 4k
34 minutes ago, fuzzynormal said:Regarding auto-focus, maybe I'm watching the wrong vlog stuff on YouTube...but...do people really move around all that much? Most "Hey Guys, sorry I'm in my parent's basement today, but I want to show you..." video I've watched is a simple talking head w/jump cuts and the person is the same distance from the lens ALL. THE. TIME.
So, ummm, why is AF the hot spec right now for cameras that these people want? Where exactly is the need for awesome AF?
Or is it us, the enthusiast market that has more practical uses for it, that's clamoring for it?
yea its kind of funny.
in fact, GH4/GH5/GH5s probably got the worst AF in all cameras
I am seriously interested in the design of a6700 though

Pretty sure vlogger using m6 and G7x a lot lol, not many people use pana for vlogger in the first place. You'd think rx100 will be the first to be popular with vlogger but most one i've seen use G7X .
pretty true, most are using G7X, G7XII, 70D, 80D
rx100 is always a bit overpriced
g7x is a lot more affordable, great color SOOC, IS is better, menu easier to use and G7XII low light is even better than RX100V...and not to mention the useful touchscreen that Sony never includes in their lineup

Kitted with the 22mm would be interesting.
most eos m owners already own that 22mm, its a sharp and fast lens but really not suitable for arms length vlogging
11-22mm probably much better, even with 2.4x crop it is 26mm which is totally fine
without crop the 15-45mm is perfect
it will be the best seller in youtube industry and hurt a lot of Sony/Panasonic entry - mid range budget cameras

"For 720p" lol
Hey 2008 called... It wants its resolution back!
Let me run out and buy a 5D Mk IV... I am so excited for that 720p! Especially as my GH5S only does 1080p 180fps and now 240fps for almost half the money. Hmm.
For the price (M50) it's actually not too bad, we can never buy a GH5 under $1000 in the next 24 months.
M50 will be one third of the price of GH5s

No 4K 30p and 720p only for 120fps points to a slower than normal sensor readout.
Well, we'll wait and see.
Could be a good PowerShot for YouTubers.
Might be better to wait for the M5 Mark II or whatever they call it, with same new tech but higher-end body.
720p 120fps slow motion from 5D Mark 4
The quality is actually pretty good for 720p, similar to a6500's 1080p?

Unlikely. It looks more like the the M5, which I believe was $1000.
it actually looks more like SL2/ 200D
and the battery is the same as 100D/M
material by the looks of things are composite
fewer dials without weather sealing, body wise it's a downgrade from M5/M6

"Frame cutout from 4K movie is possible"
The makes it sound like the default 4k has no crop??
I currently am camera-less and this is starting to sound like it ticks a lot of boxes for me. Size, ergos, IQ in video and stills. Just hoping for the 35mm f1.8 to be announced too. Also fingers crossed for $1000 or less.
composite entry level camera, it should be priced similar to M6 $699 body only
the white color i believe is for female vloggers

this is the entry level camera
it wont be expensive, based on design and battery choice

Nokishita posted an exhaustive list of the specifications of the upcoming Canon EOS M50, and there are new images too.
The Canon EOS M50 appears to be a very decent mirrorless camera. Now let’s wait to know the price. But I dare to say already the EOS M50 will be a bestseller, especially if Canon eventually decides to deliver more and more serious EF-M lenses. Announcement expected for February 25/26, 2018.

Digic 8 is the stills version of the DV6, which is in the C200 and XF400/405/XG10. It will have the same hardware capabilities for video, so the M50 will shoot 4K as 8 bit 150 mbps H.264. Likely 30p (the cameras with the DV6 do 60p, but those have active cooling), and probably a crop. FHD will be full sensor 60p 35 mbps.
interesting, unveiled in a week anyway

Exactly. For some being available in a store close by is enough to be "best".
As a side note,
I went through the popular tourist district (gamla stan) in Stockholm today.
Lots of people from Japan, Finland and Russia walking around taking pictures.
I would say 30-40% where smartphones.
I saw a couple of bridge cameras and advanced compacts.
One Fuji
One Olympus
The rest where Canon DSLRs, they outnumbered the smartphones I saw in use. But of course every single person most likely has one.(not a single Pansony or Nikon in sight.)
not surprised at all, Canon's been always leading the camera world

Nokishita didn't say anything about 30fps or 100Mbit.
Vitaliy at Personal-view seemed to draw it out of thin air and add it to the list of specs on his site.
That being said, I am not surprised to see 30fps and 2.3x crop though

The capabilities of excellent 4k shootings are there in many smartphones, however one of the worst thing about them is the ergonomic. Now with this face tracking and stabilizer it seems like a no brainer for me to get one. DJI also improved the battery from an hr (the last generation without mobile shooting) to 3.5 hrs.
One down side is the weight, around 500 grams but still we are talking about the whole package under 700 grams for smooth videos. Share your views on this device guys

I am pretty sure Canon will, eventually with the increasing number of users shooting in 4k
from the design perspective M50 is an entry level camera, very much like SL2.
M50 is just a test of Canon finally going full 4k with Digic 8 processor
so there will be M5 Mark II, 90D, both probably can use DPAF in 4k very soon
