  1. i think its entirely possible that a firmware update could bring 10bit hdmi out.. the fact that the world is still waiting for features as simple as peaking or punch-in while recording is completely beyond me.  i mean, really, what the fuck!? how is this possible???? somehow canon is 5 years down the line, and they are still operating as though they just now discovered how to make a dslr shoot video.. :(

  2. I've never understood this project. Wonder says that he wanted to use a scale not available to the everyday shooter and thusly chose anamorphic lenses on f3's, yet this "scale " is all but completely destroyed by an overly complicated graphical overlay, and time-mapping done in way that made it feel like a cheap gimmick. It's mentioned that a goal of the piece was to show the scale of this iconic train, yet the blurbs displayed are of such a cursory and superficial nature - they are also next to impossible to read amid the visual clutter.
  3. I'm thinking about putting a rokinon cine kit together for my gh3. The speed booster will make it rather versatile. 14mm = 20/28. 24mm = 33/48. 35mm = 49/70. 85mm = 119/170... I'm not holding out much hope for a smart m43 speed booster. Might skip the 35 and splurge on a Zeiss makro-planar 50mm later on. I now have an erection
  4. B&H just has way higher demand than any other camera store. Manufacturers do favor them because of this, and they often times get more product than other stores, but not at a scale relative to the massive skew in customer base. There is no way for them to keep up with basically the entire country turning to them first for new equipment.

Anyways, I took gravitatemediagroup's advice and was able to snag one from Samy's. Canceled my order at B&H after they told me that I would likely not get one from their current shipment.. Excited to finally get this thing all up in my gob.
  5. Blanche,

wow, i just happened to see your Moroco video on vimeo yesterday! ( i was browsing for stuff shot on gh3) it looked great!

I think getting the mke-400 and a Zoom h1 could be a great audio setup. Dan Chung at DSLR News Shooter and many of his collegues love that recorder.

Add an Audio Technica AT803B Lavalier mic with XLR to 3.5mm adapter and you have a VERY versatile and compact audio setup. Also very cheap - just in case it happens to get lost or stolen.

  6. B&H says they have no ETA from Panasonic at the moment, while the panny web site says jan 28th is the next shipping date...

a local chain here in Seattle, WA, US said they are expecting a shipment in med february.

    Gravitate,

thanks for the tip, i tried it last week. they are completely out of cameras and also have no idea when they will be getting any more shipments.

  7. Ben - There was a lot of talk about this lens creating moire.
However when Andrew tried it at a Panasonic shoot, he said it was very minor and nothing to worry about. BUT, he also added that because the gh3 sensor captures with such high detail, softer lenses like the voigtlanders and slr magics tend to produce a much more desirable image.

Personally, I'm very into the idea of having a totally sealed run and gun kit that requires no rain jacket and has image stabilization... But I'm still waiting for my camera ATM.

Another strike against this lens is that if you plan to eventually move up to the bmcc, it be basically useless.
  8. has anyone actually gotten their gh3 yet?

as far as i can tell, b&h in the states just recently sold out its first shipment, and is now waiting for more cameras due around JANUARY 30. looks like the camera is currently in stock in the UK, and either sold out or not yet selling everywhere else.

  9. Whatever camera this is in wouldn't even need any capture API. Just the ability to feed hd-sdi/hdmi. It could just be a simple camera head. No internal power even. Put a 1/4-20 on the bottom, a lens mount on front, and uncompressed hd out the back. Would save gobs and gobs of development money. And bring the retail price way down. You could even do away with most physical controls and simply use a smart phone for that (a bit extreme, i know) There is no reason a camera needs to be responsible for anything but the feed anymore. Everything else can be modular. Anyone remember the silicon imaging s3? Or even the Alexa m or mobile or whatever?

Imagine how cheap a camera with no power solution, no recorder, no screen, practically no housing, could be. Let people part that stuff out to the specifications they need/want. Most do anyways. (Meaning they already have the hardware required to run a rig like this.

I'm very excited to see what the axiom campaign will look like and what kind of numbers they will need to pull to make it happen.
  10. Re. Alternate gh3 press release:
Yes that would have been amazing. Also the fact that the camera has a massively powerful processor makes me think that the sky is the limit in terms of hackability. It would have been earthshaking to see them announce open firmware - a camera designed to be hacked.

Photo/video concessions: before the bmcc I don't remember the last time I got excited about a dedicated video camera. Everything out there has been shoehorned into a hybrid package, and had to make major consessions to get there. It still seems that other than the gh2, there hasn't been a "slr" that has even begun to tip its scales towards video over photo.

I do think that crowd sourced cameras with open development are just around the corner. It's just a matter of time. Imagine a native aptina sensor, plugged into something like an arm processor, with interchangeable lens mounts... Wouldn't even need on board recording. Just buy something from bmd or atomos. Wouldn't need onboard power, monitoring, or sound for that matter. Interface could be purely Bluetooth and the capture feed could be chained off to any number of monitors.
The amazing thing is that all this tech already fucking exists. The entire dev process would be pure application.

QHR: u just went full retard
  11. We all know the past was hdslr. And before that was 3ccd's and dvtape. And before that was, what, hi8? We know that $3000 US is the sweetspot for innovation. We know that a bit of catering, a bit of dedication, goes a long long way for us video fetishists. We know that we can get inside, tinker around, tune that shit and come out with unprecedented results. We know that, given those results, the big guys have been holding back.

The gh2 looks like it was a bit of a fluke. The BMC, though marred with a very botched release, looks like the first truly innovative camera to come out since the 5d2. Sure red, arri, sony, canon, even panavision have innovated. And perhaps we are at a crossroads where that innovation is truly starting to trickle down to us common-folk.

We haven't seen a truly open camera platform. We haven't seen a crowd sourced camera project headed by competent, sensitive engineers backed by ingenuitive and savvy entrepreneurs (the digital bolex looks like hipster runoff IMO). I think the market is still wide open for any scrappy little outfit to get that deep penetration, if they so choose.

So, what are the possibilities? What are we forgetting?

  12. Dude, I think, you didn't move the camera (GH3), to check for Moire. I saw, some appearing, but, before the camera could start developing moire (or atleast allow it to be noticed), you ended the video (and so, the test).

There is moire in this shot, but its very fine. Seems to be more in the beginning. If you feel like doing it again foggyflute, it would help to start further back, then move in to as close as you got before. Maybe try moving back about 3 times as far. thanks again.
