  2. Yea, the F3 is a beauty and very, very tempting. Coupled with a hyperdeck, it is a hell of alot of bang for $. Certainly worthy of a feature.   I just really wanted to give up on external recorders and big rigs though. I was an early user of the HVX200/s35 combo and the huge tripod to go with it.... I hoped those days were over.... lugging that setup around Iceland in winter was not fun!   If i was in a studio environment though, the F3 would be at the top of the list.

Unless something changed in the last month, you can't order one unless you are in China and there is zero worldwide customer support.   It's not a camera that is on the market, as far as i'm concerned. Also "only" 11.5 stop, more than workable, but i've always thought that 12+ is the magic number.   Looks interesting though, especially the mini.   BMCC and the speed booster might be an interesting combo too
  4. I hope so....   S35, 12+ stops and 10bit/4:2:2 internal and I will be very happy. I'm not putting my hand in my pocket until those 3 specs are met or bettered, under $10k.   I have a gut feeling that Panasonic will come out punching at NAB.... They are never scared to bring pro features to a prosumer price bracket.
  5. Are there any S35 or larger 10bit cameras for under $10k?   I do think we should be at the point where we see 10bit come down to cheaper cams.... But I would not expect Canon to be the 1st!   Maybe Panasonic will launch something at NAB
  6. Much like aliasing/moire on a 5DII or BMCC..... You just need to test the situations that create banding and try to avoid them or use a different setting to minimize it.   For 99% of your shots though, you should be fine shooting C-Log. It has a great look and is surprisingly gradable for 8bit (if it works like a C300).
  7. Anyway, it is beside the point.   Just because one software issue is deemed legal (for now) it does not mean all software issues are legal. That would just be ridiculous.   This whole thread started because of this "Disabled movie restart on all DIGIC V cameras due to legal uncertainity"   So, while you seem very sure of yourself, the guys at ML clearly aren't. Probably because what they are doing is, unfortunately, 100% illegal.

I wonder if the S35 crop mode keeps its resolution through the HDMI out?   Would be a sweet little setup, if you get C300'esque 1080p pro-res 4:2:2, for those jobs that don't need 4K.   Also, filmman, if you get a chance.. can you see if the S35 crop mode can do 60p? If it does... Then getting C300 quality 1080/60p is a huge plus point.
  10. whatever you say. It's not my neck on the line.... Just trying to pass on info i have from nearly two decades in and around the software and digital production industry, dealing with many copyright issues.   The fact you don't think jailbreaking is a DRM issue says it all.

  12.   That doesn't mean it is not illegal.... Canon's lawyers would just serve them papers, you think a cop is involved in every lawsuit?   It has nothing to do with digital rights management, which is what affects the jail broken iphone. You may as well say ripping a film is legal too, as that also takes place in the digital domain.   I don't know what good comes from spreading myths? I work in the software industry. ML is a clear breach of copyright laws, eg, illegal. This is not me saying they are wrong to do it, i'm all for ML.... But misinformation is not gonna help anyone.   If ML stick to adding small features that don't affect Canon's bottom line, i'm sure they will be fine.
  13. Canon own the copyright on the software/firmware.... Any modification is in breach of that copyright, therefore illegal.   Bruno - I think Android based cameras are really exciting, Java is a very powerful language and has the potential to add many cool features... I just hope a manufacturer is brave enough to open up the full hardware. From what i understand, not many variables are open to the Android devs on the recent cameras. It is more about applying filters and features once the image is stored, rather than manipulating the image off the sensor.   Early days though.
  14.   Surely the recent "1-DC is a rip off" posts proved that software engineering costs $49.99 and is fail safe?
  15.   It isn't though.... Better not to spread the myth that what they are doing is legal. It simply isn't.   Do i think they are doing any harm to Canon? No. Is it legal? No.   If you all want ML to continue, it is better that they use caution and only add features that are not gonna get Canon mad.
  16.   I am a GH2 fanboy (well, i love the camera). I still can't get my head around the people on here who feel cheated though.   Canon, Lumix, Sony, BM, Nikon etc all have tools that are more than capable of making a feature that could be shown on cinema screens and wouldn't see people walking out for a low resolution image.   Product separation, product crippling etc.... Fine, have a moan. But don't feel hard done to, you have some great tools out there.   btw - if Canon operated like people want them to... They will go out of business in 5 years. Not ideal!
  17.   Ridiculous statement.   We are talking about image making machines. Not narrative film cameras.   Do you think some indie kid shooting his friends reading out a poorly written script is far more important than, say, a guy sat in a hide for 9 hours trying to capture footage of a mountain lion?   We are all on here for different reasons. I've been involved on indie shoots, but my main work is nature imagery (stills/film). My view is just as valid as some indie filmmaker.
  18.   I wouldn't blame them either.... They produce various cameras that are hailed by indies... They fix up all the well known problems and the indies just bitch because the resolution isn't quite as good as a gh2... even though more important aspects, like DR, colour, skintone and low light are far superior.
  19.   The point you raised is that Canon have priced you out of making your project... Forcing you to either choose talent in front of the camera, or features in your camera.   I put forward the counter argument that Canon have already created a budget indie camera that shot Shane's film and made him a good income and received praise from critics and viewers alike. In fact, they added a better codec, better low light, less aliasing and moire in their 5DIII upgrade.   Face it, Canon have provided cameras that any indie film maker could shoot a watchable film on, if they have the script and talent.... prices from $500 to $30,000.   I'm sure we'd all prefer more features.. resolution, dr etc.. and we'd all prefer things to be cheaper.... But the art of making an indie project succeed is to find ways around such problems and use your talents and script to drag people into the art.   Anyone sat on a script thinking they need to wait to shoot it in 4K, or with 14 stops DR, or must have raw, or must have x lens are just wasting their own time.   If you have a good script, buy a D800, a 5DIII, a 6D, a GH3... hell, grab a 2nd hand GH2 or 5DII.... Learn to light your scene and get pristine audio... and go do
  20. I'd ask why Panasonic, Sony and Nikon haven't even made a 4K DSLR, rather than bashing Canon for making it happen, but out pricing you.   At least Canon have one on the market. If resolution is that important to your film making, shouldn't they be applauded for getting the ball rolling? It is still the cheapest (by some way) 4K solution on the market.   As this article mentions Shane, you realise his film, "act of valor", shot on the 5DII, grossed millions and was well accepted by the film goers and critics? No one was sat moaning about it not being 4K.... They were just engrossed by the film.   It seems to me that feature lust and pricing might be being used as an excuse by people to not just go out and shoot a project.
  21. I should have been clearer..... If all other things are equal, a FF sensor is better for low light   also, if the lens f stops and focal lengths are equivalent... focusing will be just as hard/easy, regardless of the sensor size.
  22.   I disagree, but I'm not gonna continue arguing, people should make their own tests.   The GH2 is a cool camera and has an ok DR.... It's plenty usable.
  23. D800 is littered with moire and aliasing.... Surely that negates any plus points (and yes, for nature and shots you can avoid the aliasing/moire, it has a beautiful image).   Canon get alot of stick... but Nikon are the real no-show in this... They could completely dominate
  24. GoPro 3 would be in my list.... Probably C100 too.   Both stunning and affordable cameras for their target markets.
  25.   When did i mention the 5dII?   I said the DR on a 5diii is better than a gh2....which it is.
