  1. Holly %$#@! That's cool. I thought I was looking at GH3 footage graded or something. My home movie cameras (modified flip MinoHD) are in the trash now. How much is this thing....

It is a little pricey at 650! I think $500 is a little more reasonable but it was worth it to me to have something pocketable and not as imposing as a dslr
  2. So happy to see the RX100 on this list. It is certainly not the best performer but I think for its price point exhibits the most innovation and progression in camera technology this year. I wish the RX1 would have followed suit with a zoom lens, but I really what Sony has done with the "RX" line so far and hope to see more.

  3. Canon 6D with a digic 5 wouldn't hurt to check out.  Nikon D800 is nice tbh

No reason to buy the 6D if the 5D3 is in your price range.

Nikon D800 is another nice option again if you dont mind the moire. The D600 would probably be frustrating as you can not change the aperture in live view. Though i suppose if you only use manual lenses thats not a huge deal

  4. I THINK the A99 is the only one that does 1080/60, but it suffers from moire/aliasing like crazy. Same with the VG900 camcorder. Still, If that doesn't bother you i've seen some beautiful footage out of the A99.

With the recent price drops it seems like the 5D is really the way to go if you really want full frame.

  5. so a rhodes mic would be better?

It depends on the situation. If you are plugging the rhode directly into the camera then no. It will pick up a ton of background noise. I use the H1 for interviews all the time - just get it close to the speaker and set the levels

  6. The H1 does not work like a shotgun mic - it pics up a lot more ambient sound. If you are recording interviews or dialouge, especially in a noisy location, you will want it pretty close to the subject. If you were recording a performance or B roll then leaving it on the camera should be fine

  7. lol! is that the 24-105? It's funny how misleading the box to this damn thing is. I thought my wife had went above and beyond on Christmas a couple years ago. I saw "L" and thought, "yes sir!" ...Only to fake a smile 10 seconds later.

Too funny! We've all been there...

  8. You could always use it for this! :)

Lol!! I'm not sure that would end up too well with the "push-pull" design. I'd probably extended it so I could fill that sucker up, then zoom out and spew coffee everywhere

  9. Hey folks! Stumbled across this lens the other day at a flea market, picked it up for $5! Problem is I have no clue what it is. I'm not even sure what brand it is. Any ideas? What kind of mount it is as well? Will it work on a Canon crop or full frame? If it ain't worth 5 bucks, at least its a nice decoration :)

  10. Honestly this one smelled from a long distance. 48fps was enough to keep me away, but having a Hobbit book made into three 3 hour movies, that's just too much for me, I can tell you straight away they'll be boring, especially the middle one, but still I hope I'm wrong, or it's such a waste.

I'm not against new technologies for the sake of it, but seriously, did it have to be tested in a film this big? Probably yes, as a smaller production would never have the power to convince theaters to display it in 48fpa and 4k.

But still I can't help but see it as such a waste. These films are VFX heavy, and VFX houses already struggle with the render times required to complete projects of this scale at 2k resolution. These films will require 8x the rendering power, as each frame is 4x bigger and there's twice as many. That's huge! And then you can double that for stereo, we're talking about 16x the rendering times of the VFX work on LOTR, and all the work needs to be more detailed so it holds up well in such detail, that's no easy feat, and apparently such a waste now that the reviews confirm what seemed so obvious all along.

Just turn smoothmotion on on your TVs, it renders any film horrible, and that's what I expect from this. I don't disregard the technology though, as it could be great for video games, etc, but there's one reason film stayed at 24fps.

Many people associate it with digital and the future, but the fact is that we could have had 48fps on film many years ago if it looked any better, I guess in the end blockbusters will always be looking for some kind of gimmick to get people out of their sofas.

I agree, however I think it is only being made into 2 movies

  11. Again Nahua - Thank you very much ;-)

Which class are the cards you are mentioning in your own examples?

You'll probably need something like the Sandisk extreme pro - they record 95mb/s

    They're a bit expensive though!

  12. You cannot use a 200mm lens handheld. I thought you were a cameraman?

Yeah, bearing in mind I'm also on a crop sensor. With a full frame sensor and a handheld rig i'd try it in a pinch. I wouldn't want to do it without IS

I will be locked down on a tripod though. Just wasnt sure if it might still be jittery while i'm pulling focus or whatever

  13. I'd like to see you go hand held with a 200mm lens on any camera.

Lol, wont be doing that! I've used the 70-200 2.8 IS with a monopod and that was perfectly usable. A few shaky shots here and there. The only handheld use for me will by photos during the day time

    Thanks for the input.

  14. Hey folks - simple question here. Is a 200mm prime going to be useable without IS on a crop sensor? Even on a tripod? I ask because the Canon 200mm 2.8l is available used for pretty cheap. I'd like the depth of field options introduced by having a telephoto, but don't want to bother if its going to be too jittery. I'd use it mostly for filming interviews but also for photographing nature

  15. For something a little different...check this out. For portability/flexibility I love it, and I love having a rechargeable or plug in option
