NEW FIRMWARE UPDATE FOR CANON EOS 5D MARK III DIGITAL SLR CAMERA PROVIDES UNCOMPRESSED HDMI OUTPUT SUPPORT AND IMPROVED AF PERFORMANCE
LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., October 23, 2012 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced a new firmware update for the EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR camera that significantly improves the camera’s performance and usability. In response to requests from professionals working in the fields of cinema and television production, the firmware update enables the use of uncompressed HDMI Output support, making possible more efficient video editing and monitoring procedures. Additionally, the upgrade supports the advanced needs of photographers through improved AF performance when capturing still images.
    Uncompressed HDMI Output Support
When shooting video, HDMI Output makes possible the recording of high-definition uncompressed video data (YCbCr 4:2:2, 8 bit) from the EOS 5D Mark III to an external recorder via the camera’s HDMI terminal. This, in turn, facilitates the editing of video data with minimal image degradation for greater on-site workflow efficiency during motion picture and video productions. Additionally, video being captured can be displayed on an external monitor, enabling real-time, on-site monitoring of high-definition video during shooting.
    Improved AF Functionality
Even when the EOS 5D Mark III is equipped with an extender and lens making possible a maximum aperture of f/8, the firmware update supports AF employing the camera’s central cross-type points (currently compatible with maximum apertures up to f/5.6). Accordingly, the update will allow users to take advantage of AF when shooting distant subjects, benefitting sports and nature photographers, particularly when using telephoto lenses.
The new firmware update will be available, at no charge, in April 2013 from the Canon U.S.A. website and can be downloaded by end users or through Canon Factory Service Centers.

    In short, not yet.

I personally think it's to early to decide for what I've seen of the footage coming from a GH3. Shure it's better built and sports some nice features, but for now I don't see it as a worthy upgrade. Maybe if Stalin succeedes in hacking it and Panasonic resolves the moiré and aliasing issues, it will be worth the money.
It really is a shame that people have to keep hacking their products. Why can't they just produce a camera that everyone likes
  3. Hello Everyone!

Has anyone had any success using thunderbolt hard drives yet? I've got an iMac and a macbook air, and it'd be great to have a faster connection than USB while I'm on the road!

Also, I'd prefer not to spend $1,000 on one of those giant desktop drives. I do travel a lot, and am still relatively broke :)

you'll get a natural hiss with all audio recording.
I think thats a bit misleading...."noise" maybe yes but certainly not a hiss! Certainly not at a noticeable level if you're doing it right

This website is a seriously great resource for anyone delving into the world of audio. The guide is immensely helpful and covers a wealthier of topics

ok relax Zach. Keep it in the pants...

I'm perfectly relaxed! Just found your question to be funny. The above resources are great. May be helpful to just pick up a basic photography book, thats how I got started.

Also check out philip blooms website - he's got a lot of camera reviews and explanations.

    thank you for your reply!

So is the 20mm good for shooting video? The lens is so small- it is hard to manual focus, especially mid shot, so maybe I need a better lens for video.

I just ordered the canon fd 50mm, will this zoom?

DO I need a zoom lens for video?
Lol, you're cracking me up dude.

The "mm" after a number refers to the distance at which the lens sees. So for a 20mm or 50mm, you only get one distance - no zoom. A zoom lens would be titled something like "7-14mm" or "35-100mm." Meaning you could start at a length of 35mm and zoom all the way though 100mm.

The 20mm is just fine for video. It may be a bit hard to focus with so just keep that in mind while shooting.

You will need an FD to micro 4/3 adaptor to shoot with the canon fd lens by the way

I know there is no head phone jack but are the audio levels visible or are they buried like the 5D Mark II. THANKS in advance.....
Here is some not so great 720p footage. I tweeted canon Australia asking for some 1080 24p footage, and they responded saying they would attempt to get some up. Not sure if that will actually happen. No clue on the audio levels

I will say some of those low light shots are great, given that they are at F4

No, you're missing the point. This has nothing to do with what the hardware is. This has everything to do with who's buying it.

Low budget film makers aren't looking to use 4K. They don't need it. It's a hassle for them. A lot of low budget film makers shoot in 720p since it is easier, faster, and more convenient for them.

Did you pre-order the 1D C? Do plan on buying it? If not, then you are not customer, and this product doesn't apply to you.

If you want cheap 4K go get mad at Black Magic Design for not releasing the Cinema Camera with a 4K resolution.
What a ridiculous point of view! I can't buy it because its 15K! If it were the price of the 1DX with the exact same hardware, I very well could buy it!

I've been experimenting using 1/50 sec shutter in lower light and then dropping the 50 FPS footage in a 25 FPS timeline. I think this should look the same as if I had been able to shoot at 25 FPS in the camera.

    (3) http://lensmateonlin...ge-adapter-kit/ seems to me to be the most promising solution for fixing an ND filter to the lens.
This has been my biggest question regarding the camera.

Thanks for that link! I'm about ready to purchase

To everyone that's complaining of the price point, were you ever going to use a 4K camera? Do you even have the hardware to do so? The computer to process all that footage? The hard drive space to store all those files? Do you even have the 1D X? No?

They even said it's aimed at Hollywood. It's not aimed at the average consumer.

You aren't a customer of this product, why are you complaining? Canon doesn't care. If the film makers in Hollywood were complaining, they would care since that is their target customer base. But they're not since it is one of the cheaper cameras available to them that does 4K and is a good form factor for tight spots when needed.

The 1D C isn't part of the photography market, it's part of a whole other market, cinema/film. It's a strategic marketing strategy done by Canon to make exclusivity to high-budget film makers. If you're not making movies ,even 4K movies, then stop complaining.
You are completely missing the point. The point being that it is the same hardware of a camera half its price. At the price of the 1D X, that puts 4K INTO the price range of a lot of low budget folks hands. Its not insane to think that small studios or even independent film makers have machines to edit 4K these days

    Hi fellow filmmakers,

I'm writing because I have a little cinematography challenge on the shooting of a make-up brushes advertising clip, and I'm wondering whether you could give me a piece of advice on what settings I ought to use. I'm not a trained DOP, I mostly direct but I'm getting to know the skills of my 7D which I sometimes have to operate myself.

I'd like to get slow-motion images of the brushes falling vertically before the lens, spinning and bouncing on the ground in full shot and medium closeup (sort of this in video slow-motion : http://vimeo.com/10109873). In order to get a sharp enough focus, I have to set the shutter speed high, but I loose light and must therefore increase the iso. The result as you've already guessed is too much noise. I'm using a 7d at 60 fps and two kino lights in a studio, and then I slow the images down using twixtor in final cut.

    - What settings would you use in order to do this shot ? The brushes don't have to be perfectly in focus I guess, but the image should be clean enough.
    - Do I really have to increase the shutter speed or should I stay around 1/60 ? Could I go lower ?

I look forward to reading your suggestions,
    Thanks !
    Ernest
At 60fps you should be around 1/120. What lens are you using? That should be more than enough light for this situation without having to bump up the ISO

I dunno.... I was very excited to get the BMCC but after factoring in the added expenses for the recording media, storing media, v-mount battery rig, and the purchase of a new wide-angle lens to account for the 2.6 crop factor I am really considering the GH3. I just make shoestring budget indies and intend on shooting documentaries with dslrs. The GH3 has fantastic image quality and higher data rate etc.... My biggest qualm shooting on my 60d setup is the lack of headphone jack for monitoring and that is addressed with the GH3. Obviously there are many improvements on this camera versus a traditional DSLR. I am wondering if the recording codec on the GH3 is 4:2:2 or 4:2:0. I haven't been able to find that out yet. I guess that will really determine whether or not I save up much more for the BMCC or jump on the micro 4/3rds wagon.
Tis 4:2:0

Fixed aperture is lack of manual control, isn't it? Who would want to leave liveview, change the aperture, then come back to liveview on a regular basis? That would be seriously annoying if video is primary reason to buy D600
That is correct, however everyone was making it sound as if you can not control any settings in live view. I just wanted to clarify that it was only aperture. You still have control over ISO and shutter. Yes, a major oversight sadly
