I shoot wedding and think they are total blast. Its always a happy day, you get damn good free food, cake, and a chance to seriously improve your skills. There seems to be a negative stigma surrounding them which I simply don't get. 

 

If you're using the GH2, the Panasonic 12-35 is a great choice. On the cheaper side of things I'm not sure

Whatever they used had some pretty sick slow mo abilities. And I'm assuming they had the ability to swap lenses because they had some serious macro capabilites, and serious telephoto abilities.

I started watching "North America" on the discovery channel tonight, and the production value was just insanely good. I was able to dig up some cool behind the scenes and making of information on their website, but am still unsure what kind of cameras they use on shows like this and Planet Earth. 

 

Anyone know off hand?

Also worth mentioning is that their use of the cineflex system for arial and ATV shots was astounding. Props to this team. 

Suppose it depends on what you're filming, but I believe the vg20 will film till the card is full whereas the nex5 has a 12 minute limit. But if you aren't shooting events, I agree there's not really a good reason to buy one.

The VG-20 had a nice image, similar to the 5N. The newer ones though indeed are not good

Absolutely RX100. Never leave my home without it. Fantastic RAW stills, great video

Pretty impossible to be excited about at the moment, but probably will be useful, especially for event shooters with camcorders

I can't quite wrap my head around the workflow. Is it spitting out a bunch of still frames, or is it a video file of some sort? 

Because of the way ML has re-structured their code, There is no question that they are going to be pushing the FPS beyond 60fps. Look, if the 5D3 is able to do RAW at 3K, I would not be surprised if H.264 1080p@120fps is possible. The camera has already shown that it can handle huge loads.

I think they'll like it. Canon DSLRs are about to get a big sales hike.

The question begs asking, why not enable it themselves from the get go?

My intern just got one and I got to shoot with it 2 weekends ago. If you don't mind moire and aliasing in the footage, its great. Slightly better in low light than the 5d in my experience. Overall image is the same

Before we go on... can we establish experiences responses to my original questions?

 

1. Can the GH3 be graded or given certain settings/hacks to get that "cinematic" movie quality feel that you get with the Canon DSLR full frame cameras, but with the sharpness?

2. Can the GH3 perform excellent in low light with certain lenses and programs (NeatVideo)

3. Can the 5DMKIII be brought to be as sharp as the GH3?

 

More needs to be done to the GH3 to get it as "professional" looking as the 5D 3 in my opinion (based purely on Vimeo & YouTube :) but if it could work it would be the BEST option due to m43 and price...

2. By todays standards yes, its a good low light performer. I'm happy to use it at 800 ISO. 1600 in a pinch. Better than Canon APSC cameras by about a stop. I used it to shoot a black and white film alongside my 5D, and I used it at 1600 and 3200 ISO with some great performance, though we were going for a grainer look. 

 

3. Not quite. It sharpens nicely though, and on a TV its hard to tell the difference. The whole sharpness craze is a little silly if you ask me.

 

I think the benefits of the GH3 are greater versatility with lenses, 1080p 60fps, and a nice sharp image out of the camera.

they do care, wen they ask what i shoot with i say mark iii, they say 5d ? i say yes, they say amen

the more clients are impress the less they ask question (more concentration for me) and they also listen more (production gets done faster)  

This is unfortunately the case around here too. If you're shooting your own projects and short films it really doesn't matter. But if you're doing freelance, a lot of people expect (even if they're clueless) a 5D, or c300, etc. 

I am a 5d mark 3 owner and I say go with the GH3. I used the t2i for over a year before I had the 5D, and made some great work with it. The GH3 definitely has a leg up on low light over the crop sensor cameras I've used. Unless you find yourself shooting in caves using a cell phone as a light source, I really don't think the 5D's low light performance is all that useful. 

 

I'd say go with the Gh3 and invest in some good fast glass, and make sure you know how to light properly. 

You can't make Mark III footage sharper than it was shot.  

It actually sharpens pretty nicely in post, though it is of course limited

I'm so glad others share my eBay sentiments.

I sold a synthesizer recently. After receiving payment and shipping the thing, the guy claims he hadn't received it and PayPal slaps me with a negative balance while the case is on going. All only 2 days after the auction.

After several phone calls and emails with eBay and PayPal, I realized I would have to take matters into my own hands. They sided in the buyers favor because I didn't upload shipping info immediately, despite the fact that I had uploaded it once he opened a case. He had my synth and my money for a week!

Well I crafted a legal looking document and threatened to sue the guy and he finally sent my money, in addition to a hateful email about how big of a jerk I was for threatening a lawsuit.

Never again

It begs the question: Was Canon just throwing us a hidden gift with the 5D3?
