  1. Andrew, a great review!

Previously, I owned a GH4. With the Vario 12-35, and the Metabones for my Nikkors, I had over $3000 US unjustifiably tied up in that system. For me, the RX10m2 is a better fit for my uses, at least until the Nikon D8XX with 4K and a high bitrate codec becomes available. Then I'll have my do everything, all in one camera.

It is funny though how people see things differently. I've found that video and stills from the RX10m2 are quite sharp and measure up well against the GH4 and 12-35 combo. I have also found the AFC in video to be useful. It hunts a bit at first but then seems to lock on and stay there on moving targets. I've done plenty of pans out to 200mm on moving targets all while keeping the subject in good focus. All I need it to do really. I would however say that if I needed to be sure, I'd probably just use the manual focus option. I would like to see a firmware upgrade to make the focus peeking more exact. The GH4 was definitely better in that regard.

Lowlight isn't so great in my opinion but I suppose I've only really stress tested it there. With proper handling and good post work I wouldn't be at all surprised in your findings up to 6400. So that's good to know and I'll try to get better exposure when shooting low light.

All in all and again, a great review and I much appreciate your time in not only doing it but for the forum to discuss these things!

  2. Why can't Sony just do it like Canon has done it since 2009? When you press the shutter button, the camera stops video recording takes a picture and then resumes. The video itself doesn't cut but during the photo capture there's a second of black.

    Works brilliantly.

Personally I think that it works less than brilliantly as you are stuck with the same shutter speed as you are using for video i.e. 1/50 or 1/60 which is going to end up with blurry images 50% of the time.

  3. It was £1500+ yesterday, I promise you. I know that is not the real price but it was. Even showed up in ads at that price on Facebook and other web sites.

It is currently £700 and as you don't seem to believe me I have uploaded a screenshot: http://postimg.org/image/ljzmf2nof/

I told them I will buy immediately if they guarantee it does 29 minutes, not 5. I won't get a reply though.

It's £1289 from that same seller now. I can only assume that the £704.50 was a screw up on the part of Amazon. You should have bought at that price as you could always return it under the DSR if it only shot 5 minutes versus 29'59".

  4.

The camera is £1500 on Amazon UK today and nearly half that price from importers or in Thailand shops, so it is a legit question they are dodging.

It's £1289 on Amazon today. It's never been £1500. It's only £1199 at Wex. I live locally to their retail store so walked in & bought mine over the counter last week

  5. The problem is that you are using an unsupported hack to enable TRIM on 3rd party drives. In my testing having TRIM on or off on the  Crucial M4 or M500 in my Mac pros made no difference so I didn't bother using TRIM Enabler & hence I had no problem upgrading to Yosemite & this is doubtless the same with the others posting here who are running Yosemite with 3rd party SSDs without problems.

Here is the explanation of what's happened with TRIM Enabler from the author of the software http://www.cindori.org/trim-enabler-and-yosemite/

  6. 50% of retail is a pretty decent price to get for anything on eBay unless it is very desirable &/or in short supply. Don't forget also that what you actually get in your pocket will be even less with eBay/PayPal fees & the cost of shipping. I have sold quite a lot of stuff on eBay recently & the loss that I have taken on some stuff is terrible but if it's the choice between an item for which I paid £250 sitting on the shelf & that I will never use it & clearing £50 for it then I would rather have the money.

  7. RAW video with ML on 7D or 5D2 is an incredible PITA it's up to you whether the effort involved is worth the trouble.

There is supposed to be a Metabones smart Canon EF to MFT Speed Booster announced soon. That would make all the lenses that you have access to useable on the GH4.

Also, apparently, in sensor technology Canon hasn't really innovated in the last half decade. Almost At All. Only on paper, not in actual field tests.

You seem to have forgotten about the C300 sensor that then trickled down into the C100. It gives outstanding quality, resolution & dynamic range at an affordable price. Six years ago when I started shooting professional video it was with a Canon XH-A1 that was then equivalent in price to what a C100 is today. The XH-A1 was a great camera but the C100 is better in so many ways & it's all down to Canon's innovation especially with the sensor.

  9. I'd love an affordable medium format. Say what you like, there's nothing compares to that look.... well... apart from large format ;)

Medium format speed booster for A7S anyone?

I suppose that Nikon or Canon moving into medium format digital could be a logical step if they made something more affordable than the 50 megapixel Hasselblad.

18 megapixel might be 'good enough' but people are always going to want something bigger/faster/better than just 'good enough'. $15K+ for a medium format camera will be too rich for most but one at $5-7K could be a big seller to professionals & aspiring amateurs.
  10. I just sold a bunch of CF cards on eBay as we only have cameras that use SD cards now. I sold as Buy It Now with a Best Offer. I priced the cards at about 60% of retail & accepted 50% as an offer (I like this way of selling as some people will pay the asking price & those that like to offer & feel that they got a bargain can be happy too). The SanDisk cards sold within a day or two whereas the Transcends took about a week even though the asking price was 50% less for the same capacity & performance.

  11. It is possible at a pinch for a Steadicam operator to use a wired follow focus with a very lightweight wire running to the camera. However  I have only heard of this being used with a proper setup with a vest & arm and the OP specifically mentioned a handheld stabiliser where one hand will always be supporting the stabiliser so this wheeze would be less convenient.

  12. Are you sure that you want a laptop? You pay a large premium for portability or conversely you get a lot more bang per buck if you spend the same money on a desktop system.
