  1. All of these manufacturers get close to optimum but don't reach it.

3 Blackmagic models and none of them satisfies me completely (stops, sensor size, rolling shutter, weight, there's always something wrong).

2 Kinefinity models and they seem to get it right but, honestly, price is almost double.

x Canon cameras that make the job but not out of the box and not without limitations.

Personally I think that the first company that puts on the market a camera with the following specs:

    S35 sensor size

    FullHD

    12 stops

    Raw + ProRes or Cineform

    normal SSD internal recording

    2000-2500 $ price

    will sale tons!

I think none of us needs 4k, nor wants to use Compact Flash, nor wants to buy add-ons to make the camera work, nor wants to struggle with crop factors, and most of all none of us goes for Raw if dynamic range is limited.

Really weird how the Japanese manufacturers still wont compete. I think though it would be tough for any manufacturer to compete with BMD who own resolve so can afford to do that cheap but also they have cut back on everything except for the image to achieve this price point. I think also the BMD blueprint is the future as far as professional film making goes.

  2. The BMPC 4K is ergonomically poor and the weight is all on a narrow plain, which isn't something that can easily be solved by rigging, except for adding yet more weight.

And the Mini is a box which needs as much rigging as the BMPC

What I enjoyed about the MINI is that it is so small and light.

The pocket camera is small and light and does prores as well as raw.

The image quality of the sensor in the BMPC is suspect. Some people have said 8 stops usable dynamic range and ISO 400 native

    .

    That's hearsay and vague

That's a really noisy, dynamically range challenged chip. I don't see how they can clean up the output to get 12 stops from it. Global shutter has a big trade off for image quality,

You just turned hearsay into fact and made the 4k into an 8 stop camera  because of its global shutter and just decided BMD were what? Lying about it being 12 stops?

unless you're investing millions in bespoke CMOS technology like Sony with the F55.

And you actually know Sony invested millions into global shutter research?

So I'd rather have a rolling shutter and better image quality. That's the main factor for me in the BMPC vs KineRAW MINI debate.

BMD have said the 4k camera will have 12 stops you have decided it wont I guess we will know when the footage comes out but until then you don't know whether its 8 stops or 13 as some have suggested it could be when converted down to 1080p

I think if the KineRAW had a Canon badge on it, the internet would be on fire.

I think you are wrong but then everything in your post is guess work dressed up as fact, All highly misleading. Anyone would think you have an axe to grind against BMD?

  3. Mark are you drunk? Not talking about the pocket. Talking about the Production Camera 4K.

    What you actually said

The image quality of the sensor in the BMPC is suspect.

I misinterpreted that as meaning the Black Magic Pocket Camera but it's clear you mean the Black Magic Production Camera . So apologies for my misinterpretation However I think it was a fair assumption AS THERE IS NO FOOTAGE that I know of for the 4k  so how on earth did you work 8 stops out?

  4. The Kineraw mini is 3199 euros PLUS VAT Then you need to buy THEIR SSD drives which are 500 euro's for 250gb and you would want two especially as cineraw is offline that you have to purchase separately. Also you have to purchase their battery handgrip lens mount and monitor separately.

By the time you add shipping and VAT you are paying an awful lot more than a BMC. there are a lack of reviews and a concern over what happens if things go wrong. A chance that many would be more happy about if the price was competitive with the BMC. Unfortunatley for Kinefinity BMD have cornered the market here.

  5. Can you read? I'm saying they are better featured. Never mentioned sales at all!

If they are better featured then they will have their own niche in the market. The point being they don't as they are in direct competition with BMC As for slow motion 4K sensor and a new recorder for 4k as well as cineraw is skirting the issues Those who buy these cameras want raw and prores that the kineraw doesnt do and is a fantastic BMC second choice as for cineraw on the mini its offline and anyway easy if you want to take DNGs to cineraw anyway. But then again cineraw is compression that in the early stages you don't want. I had an email this morning advertising a 3T hard drive for £75  Who cares about saving space when hard drives are coming down. If I really did want cineraw I would buy it for a BMC.

Your argument for the Kinefinity being able to compete with BMD is fatally flawed. My answer was to be non confrontational However the proof lies in the future in davy jones locker which I'm afraid to say is where the Kinefinity IN MY opinion will end up

  6. There's no need to drop the price. KineRAW MINI is not a BMCC clone. It is getting a 4K upgrade path and has a better image than the 4K BMCC. That's worth paying a bit more for.

So you're saying they are selling well. Oh okay as long as they are. Obviously the general public see it differently to me and kinefinity are not on the titanic waiting for it to go down.

  7. Excellent! That sums it up and my key point is that when you start with a BOX form-factor versus the one Millionth decendent of the Leica (which was designed to transport film in the image path >>>http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/dd/Ur-Leica_IMG_0259.JPG/800px-Ur-Leica_IMG_0259.JPG

You stand a way better chance of moving the product design improvements in a logical and perhaps, modular direction.
RED got it right with the concept of a box that is upgradable. Sony FS700 also 'gets that memo'.

If the folks at KineRAW are as smart as I suspect they are ( they have been listening  to USERS after all) they will follow RED's lead and develop modular cameras that use common 'Chasis', heatsink and component interfaces.

As for cost. Nothing is more expensive than a cheap camera that you entirely replace every year.

What you mean like the sony f3 or maybe the canon c300 Yep you can certainly offload all your dosh on a pretty camera alright. The BMC does RAW and err prores with 4k ON BOARD. You don't have an argument The kinefinity doesn't compete Nor does the canon C300 or the Sony F3 Not if you want to make a film that is

  8. Yes I think he will be remembered as a pioneer and inventor of modern film making that actually competed with film. I wont say beat or replaced film as in my opinion film has a much richer nicer look but that's my opinion. But I wouldn't be looking forward to my new BMC if it wasn't for him. When I first heard about Red I really thought it was some kind of joke. He wasn't joking and turned digital literally on its head.

Thanks Jim the World needs visionaries like yourself.

  9. If Kineraw bought the price down and sold a usable camera instead of trying to cover up maximising profits they would sell like hot cakes. Especially with the mood people are in over BMD. Surely they could do that. They could establish themselves right now for the future But this way no one in their organisation will make lots of money and will disappear off the radar in my opinion.

You need the hard drives and stuck with kinefinity ones. Basicly its the old arri trick of selling all the little bits and pieces to make you a millionaire.

The Kinefinity was something I would very much consider but they just don't compete and will go the way of the Ikonoskop

Yes its nice to have a larger sensor than the pocket or the BMCC But they have an answer in the 4k Every way you look at it the Kinefinity canoot compete. Shame really.

I think the problem was they left it to long The bolex has done the same thing.

  11. The problem is it costs £8200 to make the camera function and that's without a monitor. Its competitor should be the BMC which if you factor in a couple of hard drives is £3000

How on earth could anyone be considering buying this over the BM's lineup. Or is money not a consideration these days?

  12. This is quite misleading on BM's part They said shipping in July then CVP put up a notice available on the 14th Aug I called them and they said their shipment is imminent. However they don't know how many they are receiving and could be as few as 5.

If I told you I was going to give you a thousand pounds and later informed you I was going to pay a penny a week until you had a thousand pounds that would be deceptive wouldn't it.

This is not very professional I'm afraid.
  13. People have changed because of new technology and shorter attention spans. Video games with non stop action have influenced what people want to see.

Investors want a guaranteed return Where a studio making six pictures might make two high budget films to make their money and make four that are lower budgeted and more of a gamble. Now investors want to cut the waste and just make as much money as possible on every single release. That though will eventually lead to staleness and an eventual decline. While people may initially be in shock and awe at the new effects that are getting better and better at a massive rate they will eventually have their fill and want to return back to story and acting. I have been hooked by spectacular trailers for films like clash of the titans only to be disappointed by the relentless effects and silly story.

To say Spielberg or Lucas have become past it is stupid. They are both masters although Lucas has been indulging in his own glory and idea of trying to be on the forefront of technology instead of concentrating at what he can be very good at and that is telling stories.

How do I know this? My cat auditioned for Lucas as a replacement for jar jar spinks part

    https://vimeo.com/5985169

    He was impressed.

Spielberg though is a master an if he is saying something is wrong then there is something wrong.

  14. It's a difficult one. If I could afford decent lenses I'd go with the EF 2.5k The 4/3 2.5k has that nice big fat overhead plus a larger sensor for more bokeh and probably better to use. The 4k with global shutter is the best on paper but no footage so far and the pocket camera is the lowest resolution smallest sensor but it is convenient.

Personally I want the 4k but again its more waiting and no footage. so I think go with the EF 2.5k.

  15. Actually JG It's a little like medicine improves but only for the select few. Not many have been able to get hold of the latest camera's either through pandering to pro's or just unavailable. The only stuff that is new are the hacks being made for and by technology starved consumers.

  16. When a site has sponsers they MUST lose some of their independence i think Phil Bloom is very very careful about that and often comes with warnings

Not all though are as good

    http://www.dvinfo.net/sponsors

This site actively promote cameras and on site Gurus will wax lyrical about the virtues of the cameras they promote under the protection of Chris Hurd who protects his own interests.

Really you have to ask is there a point to believing one sided reviews/discussions from a forum if the sellers cameras you review are paying you? Maybe useful as a demonstration site but as a forum? All your going to get is guru led promotion and fan followers. sprinkled with self proclaimed experts following the site line or worse being paid by a manufacturer like Sony to sell cameras under the guise of being unbiased and naturally reaching their conclusions through proper testing and superior knowledge. Perhaps useful if you have a problem with your chosen camera if you can overcome the I'm a pro Before they steer the conversation somewhere else and make you fell like a prat for even asking but mostly taken over by bashing or removing of any criticism. So you get bashed brainwashed and then spat out if you speak against them. But then there are a few wretched sites exactly like this Often you may get a professional who becomes a celebrity who has a boot boy gang surrounding him The celebrety takes pleasure in ruling the surfs often with great cruelty and hurls insults at newbies for entertainment. (Bullies)What is worse though is how the majority of the site back such behaviour and encourage it.

  17. Genesis was very beautifully graded. Brighton doesn't really look like that. The oranges from the fair ride horses shot at magic hour Andrew also captured a taste of that in one of his films (I downloaded some of his DNG files and had a little play in AE.)

I think Shane Hurlbut could have used this hack as a crash cam for his new film Need for Speed if he doesn't want to risk the Canon C500 4K. Maybe Top gun 2 could that as well.
