  1. Resolve is great seeing as its free but its limitations compared to the paid Studio package are basically sans: Noise reduction and motion blur effects, stereoscopic workflow, limited to UHD, grain, lens flare and light ray effects. full list here: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/compare Keep in mind that it is GPU intensive and you'll need a good rig to get it up and running. Just download it and see... It may take a little getting used to especially if you are new to a node based workflow - but thats what internet tutorials are for...
  2. Thanks, if you think its a good choice then thats more than good enough for me. You have just justified my purchase BTW I contacted Tamron and Blackmagic about the Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 VC working with the Ursa mini 4.6K and got no response even after a follow-up email. Oh well... Just waiting for my Ursa mini to arrive - whenever thats going to be (ordered 8 weeks ago...) the reseller, videodata.de (german shop) have no idea when to expect shipments from Blackmagic. They have great service and and are very open about the whole thing.
  3. I'll dig this up again. I have decided to go in another direction and have ordered the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens EF together with the 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens EF. Cost-wise they add up to just over what the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM will cost. So essentially I'm throwing stabilization out of the window for a set of much faster (sharper maybe) lenses that I'm only hearing good things about designed speciffically for APS-C. Now I just need the Ursa mini 4.6K to arrive (ordered 7 weeks ago from Germany) and am trolling the Internet till then... Anyway thanks for your advice guys - much appreciated.
  4. Very easy to come to that conclusion from a first world country. The world is a much bigger and uglier place along with the internet that connects it. I would hate for any organisation to have the power to shut down websites willy nilly. Total freedom doesn't come in a nice package and Internet piracy is a loophole that has been used (abused) since the early days of the WWW. Personally I'd like to have access to sites like wikileaks, un-moderated chat groups in google, etc... Who would decide which sites should be taken down - private companies, the Americans, Chinese, Russians, EU, UN...? Would it stop at piracy, would it get political, would it take on a commercial role? Sure its a thorn in big media's side, personally I don't care. Who hasn't downloaded a copy of After Effects\Premiere Pro once apon a time to get to know the software - then invested in a CC license once paid jobs started rolling in? Adobe got it right to introduce a subscription model as opposed to a lump sum up-front, genius. Netflix also has a pretty cool alternative to piratebay. We need more innovation from the private sector, not a blunt heavy tool operated on a national level...
  5. I think its up to Blackmagic to add support to the Tamron lenses. I hope that a firmware update or two down the line may sort this out. The active EF mount from Canon is third party tech that BM and Tamron have to reverse engineer to get it working right. Maybe its not that simple...
  6. Thanks - I'll check them out but as it stands at the moment on the Blackmacic forum: Lens model: Tamron SP AFA012C700 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD (EF Mount) Focal Length: 15mm-30mm AF works: No Aperture control: No (No readout of aperture or control) IS works: No Vignettes: No Lens model: Tamron SP 24-70mm Di VC USD Canon Mount AFA007C-700 (Model A007E) Focal Length: 24mm-70mm AF works: Yes Aperture control: Yes IS works: No Vignettes: No Lens model: Tamron SP 70-200MM F/2.8 DI VC USD Canon EF (Model A009E) Focal Length: 70mm-200mm AF works: No Aperture control: No (No readout of aperture or control) IS works: No Vignettes: No
  7. Oh my goodness - you just made me homesick. I'm originally from Botswana. I hope you realise how lucky you are to have seen both leopard and wild dogs in one trip, very nice. Looks like you got there well into the rainy season, all that green doesn't last that long. I'd recommend going again in the dry season when everything had dried out so you can see further (no green leaves blocking your view) also with water at a premium (outside of the Okavango) more animals are attracted to watering holes - things often tend to get interesting. Anyway, awesome footage and thanks for sharing. The hippo running along the bank gave me goosebumps, those things scare the crap out of me
  8. Thanks IronFilm, I'll look into the Tamron lens however on the Blackmagic forum: https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=45950 This particular lens hasn't recieved much support: Lens model: Tamron SP 24-70mm Di VC USD Canon Mount AFA007C-700 (Model A007E) Focal Length: 24mm-70mm AF works: Yes Aperture control: Yes IS works: No Vignettes: No Anyway will keep digging - Thanks
  9. I'd like to get some insight from the community on EF lens options for the Ursa Mini 4.6K. I have one on order and am slowly building up UM4.6K rig, coming from a long DSLR background with the NX1 being my go-to camera at the moment. OK the question is basically for my first EF lens its a toss up between the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM and the Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM. I do a lot of handheld stuff and won't have a tripod with me absolutely all the time so my reasoning is that Image stabilization will be critical on the lens that I'm using. The 24-70mm f/4L IS USM has stabilization (and a macro mode too) but at the cost of speed vs the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM without stabilization. What would you go for, speed vs stabilization. Any insights and broader knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  10. Thanks Mattias, I didn't think so as I couldn't find anything about it. Would be nice though...
  11. Guys does anyone know if its possible to use Samsung NX glass on an EF mount? I have the "S" series 16-50mm and want to try it out on and Ursa mini 4.6K.
  12. Reporting from Warsaw in Poland. Video is OK here. I have a mate who is self sifficient with a GH4. I have another mate with his own Red Epic - also does well for himself. Its mostly a game of who you know in the biz, if you want hi-end work and for the wedings, corpo jobs etc... a good reel and a reasonable price is key. I Have tendered for a job alongside a friend and charged double what he asked for and got the job. Thus I learned that of you are going to under charge, you will only attract flies (lots of buzzing and fussing over s##t). Its all about networking and delivering consistently. I never do spec work and favours BTW...
  13. Thanks Geoff, I am literally two weeks past warranty now so I gave this a try. I did a "factory reset" from the "System Parameter" menu and it did indeed reset to factory settings, had to re-enter my timezone, choose language etc... The problem still remains though. Andrew, I think you are right, looks like I'll have to send it in for repairs and that's going to take ages and the cost??? We shall see. When I got the camera new a year ago it was stuck in a reboot loop out of the box so I had to send it back but it got fixed in six weeks. I live in Poland, ordered it from a company in Hong Kong who shipped it to me from a shop in the USA only to get it sent to Korea for repairs. Oh well it looks like the fun is starting all over again... I really love my NX1 but all this is pointing my head towards the Ursa Mini 4.6K with a set of Rokinon Cine lenses... Just saying
  14. Yep, it takes a minute to actually navigate the menu - its that sluggish. I tried installing an older firmware and to my surprise it actually worked. I downloaded and installed v1.31 and the problem persisted. Then I connected via i-Launcher and updated to v1.40 (the latest firmware) and the sluggish interface, trouble reporting battery levels, slow menu response etc still persist. I assume that its some sort of memory leak...
  15. Thanks Sekhar, Settings> reset> all. All that does is reset user settings. There is no way to fully reset to factory defaults on the NX1. That is why I am on this forum in the first place. Firmware ramains at version 1.40. Frustrating...
  16. Thanks for your suggestions... I was using a Sandisk Extreme pro 64GB sdxc 95MB/s. The same card I have been using for months without any issues. I have tried formatting it on camera and on the PC too for good measure, tried a Transcend card too. The symptoms remain the same with and without SD cards mounted. Also I have left it overnight with the batteries out - no change. I have also tried completely draining the battery and then fully recharging it to no avail. I have spare batteries and SD cards and have ruled them out as the root of my woes. The NX1 is functional but very sluggish to navigate the menus to the point where it eventually freezes. I have contacted Samsung about the issue but got the usual "have you tried turning it off and on again..." level of helpful suggestions.
  17. I'm new here so I'd like to say Hi everyone. I have run into what seems like a memory leak issue or the operating system keeps tripping over itself. I'm a film maker not a programmer so please bear with me. Yesterday I was filming in the studio with my NX1 (Firmware 1.40 - latest to date) with HDMI cable attached to a monitor for preview only, internally recording 4K, 24 fps, no sound, no picture style, movie quality set to Pro, smart range off, Luminance level 0-255, Gamma control set to DR. All was fine untill half way through the session the camera froze. No big deal as these things happen from time to time so I removed the battery and put it back again. It took me about a minute and a half to actually get to the camera in its frozen state as it was in an overhead rig requiring a stepladder to access the camera. Since then it has been behaving like a rebellious yet very lazy teenager. It has trouble booting and the interface flashes on and off for about five seconds or so. The menu is very sluggish and eventually becomes unresponsive. It has trouble reporting battery status for the most part just being blank though sometimes I am able to get a reading for a while. I can still take photos and record video but the previews are very slow and eventually just freeze up. Changing shooting modes sometimes speeds the OS up a bit (changing from Manual to Aperture priority for example). I have tried resetting everything in the settings menu (a feat that takes about a minute to navigate to) but all that does is reset my user preferences. I have tried updating the firmware but it already has the latest installed 1.40 and won't let me reinstall. I am past my warranty at this point but all I am looking for is some way to do a full factory reset or somehow refresh the OS somehow. Any suggestions or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...
