  1. Can someone advise real quick on the differences between x-h1 and x-t3 for video after the firmware updates?
  2. Good deal. As a casual filmmaker on a budget I’ve never really been invested more than $1300 or so in any one setup so this makes the most sense to me. Honestly can’t wait to have a 18-55 lens again after shooting with a Native 35mm lens only for the last 3 years (Plus some Nikon glass which I will get an adapter for). Now if only my Sony will sell on eBay...
  3. Ha! Good to know! I think this was using color transform in resolve or a 1d lut slog 2 to rec709. Tried a couple different ways. My struggle was that I could pull the highlight info back but the shadows were too dark. Then I didn’t want to fool with masking. I’ll need to look into luminance mapping...I was eyeballing after conversion to pull the image down.
  4. I thought X-H1 could also do 4k but was limited to 20 mins? Yeah I’ve seen the X-H1 used pretty cheap. But yeah, I’m sticking with 4k so I think the xt3 is what I’m gonna go with.
  5. Yeah for now I’m sticking with internal. I was watching some old films of mine shot on the ole Nikon d5300 and what impressed me most was that the out of camera colors seemed more naturally pleasing than what my skills are able to pull out of the Sony. I just bought a gimbal I haven’t used much so I’m thinking maybe I’ll give this a go. One of my reasons for transferring to Sony was the IBIS and wanting a flatter profile but funnily enough I’m being driven back to an easier to grade profile. I do want ibis but can’t afford the xt4 and also want 10bit so I guess compromises have to be made. Looks like I can pick up the xt3 and a 18-55 2.8-4 kit from bh for $1,399 brand new with a San disk 64gb 170mb extreme pro card and extra battery. I’m used to having a 128gb but never have filled it up so this should be plenty to get started shooting. Perhaps if I truly can’t live without ibis I can sell and try something else? For the price all in I can’t see anything else that hits my specs for less?
  6. These are some good points! Good to know on the firmware update. The only downside I can find to the Fuji i can find is probably ibis. Seems like their native primes at 16mm and 35mm are reasonably priced. Still wondering about GH5 but I’m sure I won’t be satisfied with the photo capability. I think I may pick up the x-T3. I also apparently live under a rock and didn’t realize the atomos ninja V can be had for $500 ish used. Would be a nice upgrade with a cage and top handle to shoot prores out the gate no? I’m not really a rig guy but didn’t realize it was that affordable. Is my San Disk extreme pro 95mbps 128gb card compatible with the higher codecs of this camera?
  7. Hey man, was hoping you’d comment as I’ve seen you post about using this. I have a 2019 MacBook Pro base model with a 6-core processor and I think 4gb video card. How will it handle the h.265 in resolve or premiere? Also do you have to link up the files over 4gb? How is that fringer adapter for photos? I wish I could afford the x-T4 but it would be pushing it. I’ve really thought about the GH5 but I just don’t think I’d be happy with the micro 4/3rds sensor. Yes I know I can speedboost it but I think I’d be happier having some form of usable video af over ibis especially since I already have a gimbal. This would force me to actually use my gimbal since I’ve only done a few tries with it. Are there any other cameras I should consider? I may pull the trigger on one this week. Looks like I can actually get a new body for around $1k if I don’t want to buy used? This seems like a pretty decent deal and the quality should be an upgrade from the codec/color science I’m used to right?? (Although the eoshd profiles were really great for out of camera color!)
  8. After much debate over the last year I am finally selling my Sony a6500. I decided I just wasn’t happy with the Sony aps-c system. Now the fun part (camera is still waiting to be sold): My main wants for video are the following: 4k, 10 bit (no more 8 bit please!) At least 60fps and 120fps Great out of box color with log capability Decent battery life (better than a6500 with 7 battery) Ibis Decent native lens selection (ie not $1000 lenses) Good photo capability Decent low light performance up to 3200 or 6400 Prefer an APS-C size sensor and hybrid capability ruling out the BMPCC4k as cool as it is... After looking at the above I’ve realized having recently purchased the zhiyun crane v2 I could technically rule out ibis. My ideal setup is a 16-50 2.8. Having said this I’ve realized the x-T3 should meet a lot of these requirements and the 18-55 2.8-4 is really close natively to what I’m wanting. Once my camera sells I should have $1200 to pick up a body and lens and I’m really thinking about getting one of these. In time I’d expand my lens selection with a native prime but would pick up a dumb adapter for vintage glass like I did on my Sony as well. Any thoughts from those who have used this setup?
  9. So some thoughts... 1) This filter for $60 is excellent. The blue sky performance isn't bad at all compared to my previous genustech filter (nearly $200!) No X pattern thanks to the hard stops 1b) I will be returning this filter because it's just not strong enough for outdoor work. I have ordered the ND8 version which will be here in a couple days. 2) I suck at exposing slog2 but truthfully haven't used it that much over the years Below is an image I grabbed really quickly this afternoon pulled out of resolve in a) slog2, b&c with a simple rec709 conversion and color correction to taste. Highlights are blown on the clouds because the ND wasn't strong enough but also the whole thing just looks way TOO dark. 3) I know from shooting film my Nikon e-series 28mm 2.8 vignettes pretty bad but with the viltrox speedbooster, it also vignettes. This image isn't soo bad but on some others, it gives off the horror look without intending to! Even my Sony 35mm 1.8 vignettes badly as well... I've read the Sigma 16mm 1.4 doesn't vignette that bad but with the lack of an affordable, native zoom below an f4, I don't think I can continue with this Sony system on my low budget...Thoughts on the stills (minus the obvious missed highlights) are welcome. I don't believe I've ever posted actual work on here before..
  10. Update: Over the weekend I ordered the k&f nd3-32 filter and my step up rings arrived from bh today. I must say even at nd32 I’m not noticing a gross x pattern or noticeable cross polarization (or whatever it’s called) in the sky. Quite impressive with a $60 filter. The only downside is...I think I need the nd8 version because at “nd32” i’m still getting blown highlights in the sky at the base iso if either cine2/4/SLog2 and this is with stopping my lens down to a 5.6. (Was working with my Nikon 28mm 2.8 on a viltrox speedbooster.) I’m going to test later this evening but I’ve instead, ordered the nd8 version which supposedly has 3-7 stops vs 2-5.
  11. Say what you will about Phillip Bloom but I found his hour plus piece on the A7SIII to be quite enjoyable. Well enjoyed over a cup of fine coffee as I did. I do take his review for what it’s worth as again he is paid and he does have access to nice and expensive Sony glass (of which I do not). For those of us who casually shoot and can’t afford the $3500 body, surely there will be a trickle down of some of these features to the a6XXX line at some point right?
  12. I should add roughly around $1500 used or new.
  13. I believe I will pass on the Sony 18-105 f4, after much research. F4 is just too low for me personally. I'm really thinking about the Sigma 16mm 1.4. I'm also obsessively researching other systems while I await my nd step up rings to arrive on my new 82mm ND, the budget-friendly K&F Concept Variable ND. Curious to see how this performs versus my 5+ year old Genustech Variable ND. I've decided to rule out the X-T3 for now as lack of IBIS. I shoot most of my videos handheld and with super shaky hands, IBIS does help. My time for video fun these days is actually limited because I'm in grad school when I'm not at my 9 to 5. That said, it's fun to research what systems I could get in if I sold my current gear. I'm torn between getting a video-first camera or a hybrid but I think ultimately, I want a hybrid because not having a photo camera would be no fun. Phillip Bloom's hour plus review of the A7SIII certainly has me wanting this body but alas even if I sold my whole setup, I'd only have approximately $1,200 for a new system. I realize this is near BMPCC4K territory if I were interested in video only. (could just get a nikon adapter and use my glass in the meantime) A lot of the cons of the sony a-series system are just fixed on this. Hopefully the next axxx body has some trickle down with the a7sIII. Being that I don't make my living from video, I just can't justify dropping $4k on a setup when I"m not financially ready to do so. The under $1500 crowd with 10 bit, is looking pretty interesting these days though. GH5, X-T3, BMPCC4k,Panasonic S1, Z Cam, any others?
  14. And this is my only issue with this lens...F4! A lot of times I wind up filming with available light and while I often stop down to f4 I don’t know how comfy I would be having that at my min, but man that range is what is drawing me towards it. Better lens in what way? I think I’ve actually demoed one of these at Best Buy. Is it sharper than the f4 lens? I don’t think I can deal with a 3.5-5.6 lens but it certainly is quite a range! What cons would there be to swap my setup? Fuji mount is adaptable so vintage and other glass can fit. I’d be gaining 4k 60p, 10 bit video. But I’m also kind of wondering what a6xxx camera might get announced now that the a7siii has come out. I probably will wait until next year to switch systems but it’s always fun to browse eBay and see what else I could get into lol
  15. Okay this is a long stream of consciousness type post so take it for what you will. I recently went down the lens rabbit hole and picked up a Samyang f2 for my Sony A6500. My intentions were to have a nice wide lens in my kit. My current kit consists of the following: - Sony 35mm 1.8 - Nikon E Series Primes (28, 50, 100) with either a Viltrox speedbooster or dumb adapter I couldn’t get a satisfying image out of the Samyang to my liking. After two months of toying with it, I put it on eBay and that sold in one day. I now have $250 I can put towards the purchase of either a wide prime or zoom lens. I’m not wanting to jump the gun this time so I’m trying to do some research. I’m leaning towards picking up the Sigma 16mm 1.4 but I wonder if there is a zoom I could consider. I only hate that the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 isn’t native e mount. I miss the tamron 17-50 f2.8 I used to have with my Nikon. Autofocus in photo wasn’t great but it was so convenient to have this range, quite a shame the Sony version is so expensive (I’m sure it’s a nice piece of glass but I’m on a budget). So regarding the lens I really want to stay under $400-500 used and do want AF for photos. I think my options are probably - Sigma 16mm 1.4 - Sony 18-105 F4 (I don’t think I want the Sony 10-18 f4) Ive also had deep thoughts of swapping my entire setup (minus the Nikon primes that live with my Nikon FE2 film camera) for something else entirely. I figure used I could maybe get $1100 for the kit at $800 for the Sony body (with accessories), and another $300 for the Sony 35mm. I’ve seen the Fujifilm XT-3 used on eBay with a 17-50 equivalent 2.8-4 lens for around $1200 on the low side...Also have looked at maybe picking up a used GH5 but I don’t think I want to go micro 4/3 route. Also have toyed with a BMPCC4K used for that price but don’t think I can live without having a hybrid. (Still like taking photos every now and then). I guess the thoughts driving my upgrade is that I don’t have a ton invested in the system and would want to upgrade to a 10 bit codec. That said, I use EOSHD profiles on my camera and I’m usually pretty happy with the look even with all the Sony a6XXX hassles.

Wound up listing this lens for sale on the bay. Just not in love with it. Really not sure what direction I want to go right now. Thoughts include: -Picking up a sigma 16mm 1.4 (leading contender) Also have considered over the last year, selling my entire a6500 kit (several batteries, 35mm 1.8) for approx $900 give or take a $100 and investing in a new system. I’ve considered picking up a GH5, GH5s, XT3. 10bit is very attractive, I’m pretty much done with shooting SLog2, I’ve been experimenting with it the last few minutes months but honestly it takes the fun out of shooting for me. As a casual shooter with limited free time I don’t mind some light grading but just not a great colorist. Love my eoshd pro color profiles I usually use. Will stop this rant here because I’m derailing the thread but you get the picture.
  17. Edit. Pulled the trigger on the ND2-32 model. Will see how it goes!
  18. @Trek of Joy quick question..which one of these is more useful for video? K&F ND8-ND2000 K&F ND2-32
  19. @Trek of Joy so which nd’s would I need help if I just went the regular route? An 8 and 16? Also if I get the k&f I’m not sure which version I need, the 2-5 or 3-whatever stop.
  20. Thanks! Yup might pick up a new Nd filter. Don’t want to drop the cash for the Peter McKinnon filter but it seems to be the best engineered variable ND. After watching Gerald Undone’s variable nd test, I might try the k&f filter or honestly may look at regular nd filters.
  21. All helpful suggestions thank you! 1) Filter size is a 49mm and it’s definitely the cheaper apsc lens not the newer FE. 2) There are no additional filters mounted to the lens. Was literally just using the step up ring and filter. 3) Understand with regards to the diff in polarizers and vari-nd’s. I think some of the problem is the Sony screen is so hard for me to see what’s actually going on in great detail. There are min/max markings on my filter but they don’t really line up. Some additional thoughts...would I be better served by getting a newer variable Nd filter? I’m def not dropping cash on a peter McKinnon vari nd. I also wonder about picking up some magnetic step up rings instead of the screw on type I have. I tried my new step up ring for my 12mm Samyang f2.0 lens the other day and I think just due to how small it was, I had to use contact cleaner just to get the thing off the variable nd filter! (Btw I’m probably going to sell this lens, have not had favorable results)
  22. Wow! Just watched the leaked video. Certainly out of my price range but wow seems like Sony should have a decent hit here. If I had the money I’d upgrade from my a6500 in a heart beat.
  23. Apologies if this post should be moved to the lenses thread... I have used a Genustech Eclipse Fader 72mm Variable ND for the better part of 5 years. When I originally acquired it, I was using a Nikon d5300 and a tamron 17-50 2.8 lens with a 72mm thread. Having moved over to a Sony a6500 three years ago and a Sony 35mm 1.8, I figured I’d just buy a step up ring and I’d be good. I quickly realized that while the Sony 35mm vignettes on it’s own, this combined with the 72mm filter provided for uneven polarization of the sky and vignetting for a not so filmic look. Recently upon browsing YouTube I came across a video where a fellow “filmmaker” was saying he uses an 82mm filter to help with the vignetting. Is there any merit to this? He also showed off a slick looking magnetic regular nd filter that obviously didn’t have any of the issues I’m getting with my variable ND. Any thoughts on affordable $100 ish regular nds? Is my Genustech Variable ND just behind the times or is the Sony Lens just going to make all nd’s vignette but perhaps a better Nd might help with even polarization of bright skies? Also my Genustech seems to always result in weird colors. Which is a shame because I remember it being fairly expensive back in the day but hey no hard feelings. Thoughts/Advice is welcome as I realize this is a bit of a rant. I should add my current lens kit includes a 28mm, 50mm and 100mm Nikon E series primes I borrow when not shooting film. Idk maybe I should just sell the Sony 35mm and get the Sigma 18-35 everyone seems to have? Lol
