  1. Still playing with the LX100, I tried a lot of profile settings and Highlight/Shadow curves to get the best image for color grading.
Finally I recommend the following settings :

    • Contrast -2 / Sharpen -3 / Noise reduction -2 / Saturation 0
    • Highlight -2 / Shadow -2

As it's impossible to apply a real LOG flat profile in-camera, so I created a LUT to flatten the image the safest way.
I based this LUT on the rendering of the VisionLOG profile with some adjustments.

    Download (.3dl and .cube in ZIP, 2.5MB) :  IWLTBAP_Flattener_LUT.zip

Just keep testing and posting, and really thx for the LUT!

If i want to go cinematic, i go for Supertone settings, and it looks good, check it out: http://www.supertone.dk/#!GH4-Optimal-Film-Setting-works-in-stills-too/c24o4/8E18836A-F271-4A14-AF0D-C575B9D5F4B6

And here is a really nice ISO3200 footage from the little camera:

  2. How fast is Neat Video on your computers? For my i5 3570k + 7970 Ghz it takes 2 minutes to compute a 10 sec 1280x720 50p footage (demo version's resolution limit). It would take ages to work with 4K. While Davinci Resolve's noise reduction really use the GPU, and it can reach "even" 6 fps with 4K > 1080 noise reduction + downsampling. Of course Neat's result are waaay better.

  3. 1. AF/AE lock button works perfectly

    2. Standard profile have good colors, -5 contrast looks good, but combined with -5 saturation the skin tones goes to orange. I use Supertone if i want to go filmic ( http://www.supertone.dk/#!GH4-Optimal-Film-Setting-works-in-stills-too/c24o4/8E18836A-F271-4A14-AF0D-C575B9D5F4B6 ), and Standard 0,-1,-4,0 if i want massive colors. It's hard to get nice flat from LX100 (Maybe Standard -5,-5,-5,-3 without curves is the best choice)

    3. iDynamic is lifting the shadows heavily, With iDynamic High you can underexpose the image more than -1,33 EV, and it will still looks good. But it comes with lot of noise, even at ISO 200. But the image is contrasty and colorfull, and the dynamic range is expanded, so i think iDynamic: Low, -0,66 EV exp correction give you nice results. iRes is useless i think.

    4. The Luma range is 16-255 on the LX100, Earlier version of FCPX had some trouble with it, but in 10.2 it's fine.

  4. Hi!

I think you should use distortion correction on the gopro footages (Lock & Load plugin from coremelt.com has a free one), without it the difference is too obvious. You used a really wide angle lens (7-14?) on the GH4, which has a really close field of view to the gopro lens, but without the barrel distortion.

The GH4 footage is punchy, but the gopro footage lack of a little contrast compared to it.

The dynamic range difference is too obvious, maybe next time you should underexpose -1EV on GoPro Protune for some highlight protection, and dont use Superview, it's much harder to correct in post

I think 24p or 25p would look nicer than 30p, it's "too fluid"

Anyway it's a nice postcard, the interiors are great!

  5. I don't think there's a skin issue here the entire place is just orange. If you want to fix it you substract orange by adding the opposite colour (teal) on the colour wheel, just like a white balance fix. With colours wheels you can take colours anywhere. orange.thumb.JPG.73c356fccf4ebc72b027bbcorange2.thumb.JPG.e5da68f2b0a244168bc0e7

    Totally subjective.

You were right, in this case it's a WB issue.

Inazuma, im already using your LUT's and i really like them!

  6. Dear All,

Could you help me how to fix orange skin tones?

Im testing picture profile settings on my LX100, and i find a good one for the dynamic range, but (sometimes) bad for the skin tones.

I attached a picture about the problem.

You can try youself to grade it, here is the link for the clip: Orange skin tone

    Settings for the footage:

    Lx100 @ 75mm F2.8, Standard, -5 contrast, -1 sharpness, -4 NR, 0 Saturation, +-2 shadow/highlight curve, iDynamic: low, -0,66 EV exposure, ISO200 auto shutter, 4K 100Mbps downsampled to 1080p25p in FCPX

If i can fix this problem somehow, this would be my "flat" settings. (maybe -3 to saturation will also help)

Simple desaturation in post is not enough, After curves orange comes back

  7. You are right, LX100 dont have LOG profile, i tried with "standard" profile all dialed down + curves.

Something like this (https://vimeo.com/109709153) is the result, it's not log, but fairly "FLAT"

The codec on LX can usually handle +1 stop without clipping but not more. i will do some tests with fixed +1EV as you mentioned.

I think CineLike D on GH4 is still Rec709, with lower contrast and with a littlebit different color profile.

SLOG2 on the A7s would be the only compressed codec which can have real benefit from ETTR, but the noise performance on that camera is not an issue :)

But A7 II users will love it :D

  8. I also tried to shoot ETTR with my LX100. I also had lower noise, and good colors, but the grading process is far longer, because i got different exposure on almost every scene. I dont think there is enough benefit to shoot ETTR with compressed codec, it's easy to clip highlights, and much more work for just a littlebit better results.

  9. When you look at the DPreview studio test at corners it's as sharp or sharper than FZ1000, CANON GX7 or SONY RX100 III

By the way, how much the 4K videos recorded handles croping in postprod?

If you crop the 4K video to a 1080p size for exemple? do you get a sharp enough 1080p image?

Here is an example of (probably flat -5-5-5-5) 4K to 2K crop:

    The Original:

It's has beautiful film look, probably flat, but graded. Unfortunately i don't have exact informations about this video.

I just cropped the 1920x1080 area from the center in FCPX

Keep in mind the source was already compressed h264, and i recompressed it.

Anyone experienced that Premier has much sharper output file than FCPX ProRes?

It's really sharp, but with natural 0-0-0-0 the image has some fine grain even at base iso.

    Check it out: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7Sh3eieBnyTZVhaakN1elZLRjA/view?usp=sharing

Im suprised about this 100Mbps codec, it can really hold the fine detail, even grain.

    Here is another one:

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7Sh3eieBnyTUEFoYTFLd0Y1MWc/view?usp=sharing

Source from various reviews, cameralabs for example.

Cropped in Final Cut Pro X, encoded to Prores LT.

If it's natural -5-5-5-5, and base iso, the grain is negligible at 100% crop.

In my tests 80% crop + h264 can wash out the grain and most of the noise.

Oh and it's far sharper even at 110% than my RX100
