  1. Not really. I use mine mainly for stills and I am using a pair of CDAF only cameras (M4/3 GX7 and FF A7s) and I use a non focal reducer Kipon smart adapter for the GX7 and a few different smart adapters for the A7s. I do like the 40 2.8 STM which is small and light even after adding an adapter, Sigma 150 2.8 APO macro and EF 100 f2. Even the cheap and cheerful 18-55 IS ii kit lens works for me. It covers FF from about 24mm and up with Sony as well as being able to use it in APSC mode and on M4/3. I have used a few others too and they were all ok for AFS on the GX7 (with Kipon and latest firmware). On the Sony it is combination dependent but should be much better with the A7Rii. AFS at least is very fast with the GX7 and Kipon and all but one of my EF lenses. AF (again AFS) is very slow with all my adapters and A7s. The only lens that doesn't AF at all on my GX7 and Kipon is an ancient 28-90 kit lens from an old film camera but it is not a good lens (it does AF on the A7s though slowly). IS works with both (not needed on your cameras) though with the Kipon adapter, Canon lenses don't allow IBIS to work even with non IS EF lenses for some reason (not much of a loss with the GX7 and no loss for video). Be careful with Canon APSC EF-S lenses with some smart focal reducers, I am led to believe there is an issue mounting. Not something I have encountered but I think I have seen posts about that. I want to try at least an APSC 10-18 STM lens on the GX7 and at least see what it covers FF (if anything) on the A7s and the same with the APSC 55-250 STM lens.
  2. Since you are using both, I would suggest maybe just one or two native lenses for each and use Canon lenses with smart adapters so you can use them across systems. There are focal reducer and non focal reducer smart adapters for M4/3 from both Metabones and Kipon and a gazillion different EF to E mount smart adapters for FF E mount. Video AF will be very hit and (mostly) miss or even non existant but MF and AFS and depending on the combination of camera/lens/adapter even AFC might be somewhat usable (though maybe not).

If you do look at FD lenses just make sure there isn't an issue with dissolving bearings. My 85 1.2 FD L has that (dissolving bearings) so the focus ring is very loose. My 24 1.4 doesn't have the issue. I did have the 50 1.2 L and loved it but had to sell it. I prefer to use them FF but do like them on M4/3. I have to get an FD focal reducer though (only have "dumb" EF and a very poor Nikon F focal reducer.

FD 24 1.4 L and focal reducer? Could match up with the FD 50 1.2 L?
  5. That makes more sense. Again, for my limited video use, I wouldn't use that in a dark restaurant. I guess it wouldn't matter what you are shooting (music video or not) if it was useful why not. I doubt I would find it useful in a live video though.
  6. Sorry not me. I take whatever lighting I get on a stage and sometimes backlight can help but away from the stage I will do whatever possible to avoid it. My video is pretty basic and not much beyond recording songs live. I doubt I would even try and light a dark restaurant and would also just take what I got. Since I am mainly shooting stills, I hate back lighting generally.
  7. If you ask Sony, they would likely say that the A9 isn't designed for you and the A7sii is the current camera they would want you to upgrade to. I am not sure there will ever be an A9s or if there is it will sell in much smaller numbers and therefore be even more expensive. There MIGHT be an A9R (probably will be even though maybe not until the dust settles from the A9). I would think there will be an A7siii before there is an A9R though when that arrives, who knows.
  8. If you mean in music videos with bands playing live, that is often what there is. I shoot live music at seven different usual venues and some are lit by the venue, some are lit by the band and some are a combination. One in particular has a lot of lights shining straight into the camera often (the lights change a lot but often incudes severe back lighting). Even the best venues can have it. I mainly shoot stills but also do videos of songs when I can. This is at a new venue I have started going to and I love the place.
  9. All the early reports now the embargo has been lifted show the camera is the real deal. Maybe if they kept the pixel count down, A7siii could be even better for AF. 24 or 30 fps? With a slightly increased buffer, who needs video? Again though, I am not sure it will be coming quite so soon and I doubt the 7 series will get the 9 "series" AF any time soon. It would also need a massive change in direction for the A7s cameras from CDAF only to PDAF/CDAF hybrid.
  10. If there is an A7siii or not, I don't think it has anything to do with the A9. The A9 is a high end camera for Journalists basically and not aimed at the movie making market. When the A7siii comes is anyone's guess(my guess would be early next year though would be nice if it was earlier). While I wouldn't be surprised if there was an A9R or similar, I doubt there will ever be an A9s as that would other wise be pretty much the pro Sony video area that they are already in. Maybe in a few generations Sony might be ready for a Sony version of the 1DC but don't think the demand will be there. My guesses would be A9 just released A7siii and A7iii and A7Riii to come within a year. A9ii and A9R IF the A9 sells well (and I think it will be a big hit) a bit later than the A7iii cameras. A10 in a few years time about the size of a matchbox and does the lot.
  11. It seems we will be flooded with photos (and videos) on Wednesday when the embargo is lifted. https://www.redsharknews.com/production/item/4532-sony-a9-impressions While I suspect the camera will be excellent (for its target market and not so much EOSHD video people), the way Sony have done this seems superb.
  12. What strikes me as weird is he chose to use his name there. Makes me think he did it for the attention he is going to get or it could be someone else having a lend.
  13. Agreed. This is the first serious camera with a larger sensor that uses an electronic shutter mainly with a mechanical shutter as the secondary. All the others till now have been the other way around and that is what makes this so special. It also makes me think Sony has been working on this for years. Just looking at the (limited) stuff to date and it seems they have got things (reasonably) right. It IS expensive but maybe not so much for what it is and can do and who it is aimed at. I think it will sell very well indeed to the small market it is aimed at. What really gets me drooling is that this sort of tech comes (hopefully soonish) into a camera that I can afford and not just from Sony.
  14. Yes it does but that is part of why this is so good. It is a LOT less. In one of those videos, there is a shot comparing a golf club swing and with the other camera the club has a very pronounced bend but with the A9 shot the club is still straight. I will see if I can find some of the videos later but I am sure there will be many more very soon.
  15. Well since there is no physical shutter it could be decades. It will mean the mechanical shutter lasts longer too (if it is not being used). Electronic shutter is just turning it on and off electronically. Some will probably break after the warranty runs out and other will last until the first pro uses it in the rain and others will outlive most of us. Sony has a video about this (can not remember where) and how with no mirror and no shutter there is much less to break.
  16. Seems to me that it doesn't shoot faster than 5fps with the mechanical shutter but it doesn't need to use that very often at all. IE, most shoot their A7 series cameras with EFCS with the mechanical shutter but most will shoot the A9 only with the electronic shutter (or at least that seems what it is designed for).
  17. Actually, it seems 20fps is very real and not just clickbait. This camera is made to be mainly used in electronic shutter mostly (where it is completely silent). You only use the mechanical shutter for flash or a few other uses. Look at some of the videos around the place. Way beyond me but very nice. Should be a lot more about it later today as the various sites start putting up more hands on stuff. I am looking forward to seeing what the NON Sony artisan sports PJs that Sony got to test it think.
  18. Don't know. yes that reflection is a bit distracting but I couldn't move as there were people on both sides of were I was standing and it was their last song as they were running out of batteries. It was a lot better than the previous night when very well lit but right into the camera.
  19. Well "every*" pro photographer that shoots Golf on the planet that can afford it will want one. Until Canon and Nikon come out with a completely silent camera anyway. * Obviously not EVERY one.
  20. Sometimes you need fast lenses AND high ISO. IF the A7s iii comes along with a fast frame rate too, that would be wonderful but I suspect the A9 will be no slouch. A7s at ISO 32000 and f2
  21. AFC remains to be seen but even using the LA-EA4 with the original A7 AFS was natively fast (though that isn't the fastest native set up). The LA-EA3 doesn't have the mirror of the LA-EA4 and works very slowly on the first gen cameras but on the A7Rii is much faster. For screwdrive AF A mount lenses you would still need an LA-EA4 for AF but the lens motor lenses including the latest super teles, the LA-EA3 should be fine. The biggest issue for video was a restriction on the aperture used with the LA## adapters. With my A7s and previous A7 what I didn't like was the limited AF point coverage so I sold the LA-EA4 (might get another as I still have a nice old A mount Sigma 180 5.6 APO). The LA-EA4 worked great with the 85 2.8 SAM (also sold). Again, this is all just speculation with the A9 but from what I have seen, I would think it might be ok with the LA-EA3 and the A mount super teles though they cost more than some of the Canon and Nikon ones. I don't think most pro sports shooters will switch to this just yet but it is an interesting sign of the times. I still shoot amateur sports with an old manual focus 300 2.8 (though I like that I can get higher shutters speed with it and my A7s.
  22. Doesn't need to so much for video though with the other thing announced. https://***URL removed***/news/0791366678/sony-npa-mqz1k-multi-battery-adaptor-kit-provides-power-for-e-mount-users
  23. This isn't a camera for making movies with video, it is a camera for getting a video of someone being shot or stabbed for the nightly news and stills of same for the newspaper..
  24. I am sure it (they) will come. Meanwhile, it seems A mount lenses with an LA-EA3 adapter on this camera will be close to (if not) native which means 300 2.8,500 f4 and 600 f4 lenses from Sony Minolta as well as some third party super teles. I can see quite a few Canon Pro sports shooters getting one of these to use alongside their DSLR with their Canon lenses at least for a while. More for general photojournalists though I think at least until the exotic teles are available. I would also think Canon lenses will work well enough for sports in many cases on this camera. As far as this forum goes, I think a much more important part of the announcement is the battery adapter kit launched alongside. For the other E mount cameras too.
  25. I don't think this is a response to anything but something Sony HAD to do. There have been rumours/threads/wishes for the "mythical" A9 since the A7 first appeared and it probably reached the point that they thought now would be good. This has likely been in development for ages and maybe had dozens of prototypes. This is a show piece aimed at Pro photo journalists for stills but with half decent video too since those people do need video now. I would love one but just as the GH5 is way too much camera for my video needs, this is way too much camera for my stills needs (and too rich for my blood). I look forward to a lower level FF mirrorless camera though. Well done Sony, the way tech is advancing means cameras beyond phones for a little while yet.
