I have no idea how it will play out. As Andrew pointed out, the stills from the 4K cameras are as good as most cameras (but not full-frames in special circumstances). I do think it is possible 4K camcorders could make a resurgence and be preferable to a GH4.
If the Sony 4K downsampled gave me more of a Blackmagic look, I'd want that camcorder convenience. Hand-held, nothing beats a camcorder like nothing beats a minivan if you have kids ;)
Or let me say, I know people who shoot video on DV tapes that run circles around those professoinals shooting 4K ;)
I think camcorders and dslr/m competes only marginally: The small sensor on a camcorder makes it unusable in low light, specially in 4k, while the big sensor of a dslwhatever makes it uncomfortable for fast focal changes between super wide and super tele and ND switch.
A wedding videographer as me would need both the systems in one dream system which simply does not exist.
A news videographer probably will not even consider a DSL
A cinematographer probably will never consider a ENG camera.

From what I see in youtube the Sony looks better, but looking at the original files its a different story. looking forward to see some sony file out of the card before coming to conlusions.
no doubt the sony is a Video Camera while the Panasonic is a photo/cine camera: different tools for different shooting styles.

That lens was the primary reason for my GM1 purchase, but I think it's just a bit overpriced if brought alone.

handling is not easy: a shoulder rig/tripod/monopod will be necessary for non IS lenses
almost all the lenses i tested are too big for this camera so in theory you would need an adaptor to mount the camera on a tripod. I solved with a leather case which adds some height in the foot of the camera and makes tripod mounting possible.

Oh ok. You sayd that you shoot @24/60 fps. Well the AC electricity in PAL regions goes at 50khz, so you need to shoot at 25 or 50 fps to avoid black frames. Or you can use DC lights such as 12v powered portables.

Often Commercials, documentaries etc don't have interest in revealing their equipment. Often they are also heavily post produced and that's unideal to evaluate a camera. Luckily here we have some very good testers that brings the best out of a camera.

The wedding season will come after the gh4 and a possible C100 replacement. I'm waiting April to decide ;)

nothing to do with PAL or NTSC. The flickering you see is due to the frames being too freezed because of the high shutter speed. To achieve a more natural look you need to blur a bit the image, just to smoot the transition from a frame to another. In my experience anything higher than 1/60 produces excessive flickering in moving subjects.
Of course I'm talking about normal 25 or 50 frames per second. If you shoot in high fps you can (must) also rise up the shutter speed to achieve a natural look. Unfortunately that'n not possible with your cameras.

Sorry for being unexplicative: I was just saying that rolling shutter is not a defect in itself, its just how the shutter works. The defect you see is called "jello" and it's the combination of rolling shutter+fast movements. IS reduces micro movements so reduces also the jello effects. Of course it can't slow down the train that passes in front of you lens ;)

Hello, I agree with your points on stabilization and weather sealing. But if you combine those 17-50mm lenses with a Metabones MFT 0.71x Speed Booster, you get a 12-35mm/f2.0 [!] lens for the total cost of $400 (Tamron) + $400 (Speed Booster) vs. the Panasonic's $850.
You gain a better focus ring for pulling manual focus, a stepless aperture ring on the Speedbooster adapter, one stop aperture, better natural resolution and a better out-of-the-lens picture thanks to the combination of APS-C glass + Speed Booster, and you get the Speed Booster (easily the most useful accessory to any MFT camera) as a factually "gratis" extra in the whole package.
So I agree that it depends on your priorities. Since this forum is mostly crowded by people who want to shoot cinematic video rather than camcorder/ENG style, I have a hunch that the Speed Booster combination provides some real advantages, and that the Panasonic 12-35mm is overrated.
You also loose decent autofocus and gain some extra weight. I suppose you're right: it depends on how you shoot.

Does IS reduce rolling shutter?
Rolling shutter is a characteristic ehm.. of the shutter. Reducing the shakiness you reduce the jello effect

Your Sigma is in Canon mount?
If yes you could try a APS Canon body and see how it goes- If you don't like it Canon is a easy sell.
If not you could take a GX7 which is a far better photo camera than the gh2 and takes very good videos too.
Low light capability and colors of this new sensor are simply great.
ML raw is pretty difficult to handle. I would ignore it.

IF I were Panasonic I would try to come up with a new lens 24-90mm 2.8 IS (fullframe terms) to go hand in hand with their GH4.
That would be great but would cost much more than the camera itself;)

Changing mind is normal. You can think that RAW is great and in theory it is, but when you start to deal with it you start to notice all the Cons. And they may be more that the Pros.

Maybe sometimes things are more simple than they looks.
Could be 4k 4:2:2 = files too big for the SD ?
Please notice the gh4+the brick+battery+external recorder+shoulder mount will be roughly the same size of a 1/3" shoulder camera as the jvc gy-hd750!!!
What i really dont't understand is the choice to crop the sensor in 4k just to mantain 16MP stills. This is a commercial choice without a real practical sense! -

Really? Were we watching the same video? Because I've downloaded 720p stuff off Pirate Bay that looked way better than that... And even the berated Sony AX100 video looked stronger to me, not that I'd buy it or anything... The only things I thought while watching that video were a) amazing that he could fit the tripod and 'copter in his backpack with half a dozen lenses and B) that I'll probably have to be super careful with focusing and my shaky hands in order to get anything half as decent as he got, because I think 4K will be much more unforgiving with focusing errors and camera movement...
I agree: AX100 looks better, but I'm sure it's because someways it handles better the poor youtube compression. I'm afraid we can't judge the camera quality from what we see here.

Andrew, any info about low light?
I think one of the major advantages of this camera is that it pushed Canon to unleash the full 4k power of their C100.
If they do C100 will have the advantage of ND filters and supposedly more sensitivity in low light.

1-inch sensor makes it less versatile in the optical side. i doubt it will have a great tele and you can't even change it. not a random choice by Sony to make the more pro 4k camcorders with a 1/2 inch sensor, more versatile but again too small for low light. That AX100 in particular have no manual controls, no decent focus ring etc etc..
No 4k...
if we consider 1080p the C100 is the wedding machine. the built-in ND with interchangeable lenses made his fortune...
However the first GH4 samples out of the card are starting to come over and they looks awesome! If even low light is decent i think i've found my next toy ;)
