Hi, there is a whole series of video he did from both camera at different ISO. You just have to click on his vimeo profile. What I was showing is how the D5300 at ISO 3200 is about the same noise level as the T5i at ISO 800 (2 stop difference). This is a very big difference. You can see the Canon at 3200 ISO here

Just look here for the difference in ISO. One is at ISO 3200, the other one at 800.

I think if you want to sell yourself as a cinematographer the best thing is to get the best image quality you can. For this the D5200 will be better than the Canon. No one is going to ask you if you had focus peaking but a cleaner by 2 stop image noise will be much more visible. The D5200 also does not have moire/aliasing, better resolution and much better dynamic range. Now in term of usability the camera can also grow with your need. You can get an external monitor for 250-300 nowadays that will help you focus much better than any magic lantern Canon camera. Just the size of the screen will make a big difference. The uncompress hdmi out will also give you the possibility to record high bitrate proress and 422 for better image quality in detailed scene and it will be better also for grading. The last thing I would add is that the D5200 has been replaced by the D5300 which has removed the Fix pattern noise (which is the only annoying thing in the d5200) and added 60fps in 1080p (no canon has this). But I think it will be costlier. But on the other side Nikon has also launched the D3300. Which on paper looks the same as the D5300. That is you will have much better slow motion. But I did not see any firm test of the D3300.

Very nice footage Matt. I like the sense of composition and the grading. The problem with these supposed reviews is not for the people that have bought the cameras but the undecided or beginner. It is a sense of sharing and trust that have made people create those internet site or communities. It has perhaps badly replace the photo clubs etc. So when someone comes to search for these information and they find some biased or rushed reviews, I think the trust is broken. I don't mind if someone makes money out of his site, once it is clear and he does not break this trust. One of worst case is the philip bloom test of the Nikon D800/d4 vs 5dmark3. So +200 000 person saw a test when the low light was done in a crowded Bar. Oh god, can you have a place where the light changes constanly as this to make a camera test !!!!!!!!!!!!!! As for Eoshd, I think it is more gear porn. The new shiny toy today is a gem and all the one before are now crap. And it goes on an on as the next one come along. Just look at the Blackmagic production cam threat, you wouldn't believe me if I told you that the 5d mark 3 raw mode is describe as shit LOL. And how one year ago makes such a big difference LOL '?do=embed' frameborder='0' data-embedContent>> Bought a Nikon D5200 yesterday - This thing is really surprising me... appears the new Toshiba sensor in the Nikon D5200 fixes moire. There's nothing like the problems here that plague the D600 and D800 full frame sensors. There's still a tiny bit of aliasing but no more than on the GH2. It is giving really nice Canon C300 approaching detail in 1080p, all on a $800 DSLR. You can dial it down really flat in-camera too, though I prefer to shoot graded in camera with a standard picture profile. In producing footage for the review I have found it to be in the same league as the mighty GH3 for video so far. Here's a 100% crop of a 1080p frame grab shot in 25p mode. The picture profile on the GH3 was slightly flatter in-camera so ignore the contrast difference, just look at the detail. Really nice! -

I think that I can understand where your point of view comes. It is from a blogger reviewer who can have multiple cameras that he can use depending his particular needs. Unfortunately most of us cannot afford or are inclined to do so. Since 2005 I have bought 7 cameras mainly for my photography (D70, D80, D300, D800, D7100) and for video Canon 7D and panasonic gh2. If there was no turn in video quality with the D5200 and later D7100, I would surely have bought the BMC. But I saw the D7100 as a ........... good enough camera that I bought a Ninja. My only gripe and that is why I am looking at the D5300 is the lack of Fix pattern noise and 60p. I will be more inclined selling my D7100 to buy a D7200 in the near future. So lets see how my perspective of a normal user that cannot just buy every camera in the sun thinks of your perspective. Danyyyel, it's no joke. Name one Nikon innovation for video since the D90's shoddy 720p heralded others to do better.... As for the things you listed, they're not so unique on their own, but yes somehow the D5300 has accidentally ended up with quite a lot of them. No moire / aliasing - see 5D Mark III, which came out before the moire & aliasing Nikons. Nikons were a veritable moire and aliasing PARTY before just around 9 months ago when they finally got wise. Shame D800 did not come out this year instead, maybe they could have done a better job. By your judgement, so I should invest 4 times more to get no moire/aliasing in the Canon cameras. Lets compare it to the all the other cameras D5300 Win Gh3 Loss Bmpcc Loss Canon Apsc Loss OLympus Loss Frame rates 24p to 60p... numerous other cameras had this a long time before Nikon (2-3 years). Sony were first to 1080/60p. Panasonic I believe offered 1080/24p first with the GH1 before the Canon 5D Mark II firmware update. But you don't knock on olympus who has only 30p (For a cinema site it is very strange, remember when everybody was begging cannon for 24p) or all the Canon andBmc don't go above 30p in 1080. D5300 Win Gh3 Win Bmpcc Loss Canon Apsc Loss OLympus Loss Very good DR... I'm not seeing it myself. Way more on others, such as Blackmagic cameras and even the tiny Panasonic GM1 does better in the highlights. You yourself said in the previous Nikon D5300 that the Nikon D5300 was on par with the Bmpcc prores about 12 stop. The BBC test and Samuel hurtado who does the Flaat profiles measures the Nikons at 12 stop. There is an example that Matt posted where the D5300 kills the 5d3 from oleg kylan. D5300 Win Gh3 ? Bmpcc Win Canon Apsc Loss OLympus ? Very good low light... It's not hugely different to others. 5D Mark III is better and GM1 is near enough identical but with more fine detail. Remember the cannon tend to be 2/3 stop darker than the nikons. D5300 Win Gh3 loss Bmpcc loss Canon Apsc loss OLympus loss Proper S35 sensor... yeah, but crappy lens mount which I can't use 80% of my glass on! 1.4x crop with Speed Booster on GH3 = larger than S35. I would say that the Cinema 35 mm standard for good reason. The second you put an adapter like the speed booster you loose the autofocus and have to get a set of lens for the M43 camera and will loose things like stabilisation. It might be crap for you but there are a ton of Nikon/third party lens to choose from the last 50 years and most third party will do nikon versions. Nikon lens also tend to keep there market value for a long time. D5300 Win Gh3 loss Bmpcc loss Canon Apsc Loss OLympus Loss Clean HDMI out... been around since GH2 times. For external recorder this output on the D5200 and D5300 like on other cameras brings little-to-no real image quality increase but for a lot of hassle. Wait until it is 10bit 4:2:2 or 4K then it will actually be useful. Have you done some test, I have a Ninja with my D7100 and I would say that it gives the same feeling as the gh2 hack. The first thing is that their is better resolution and details. It is like you lift a veil on the image. The noise is tighter and grading is much more solid. Put the camera in front of some static image and it won't be that much different at first view (It is but in a subtle way) but add some moving images with lots of details and grading and the higher bitrate makes a much bigger difference. For those who have experience with the gh2 and hacked one it is about the same. If you see the amount of effort and dedication on higher bitrate for hacked gh2, I think their was some good reason for it. So perhaps you have a plethora of camera at your disposal that can cater for different needs better than the D5300, but non offer a better all rounder complete camera for now. And not a jack of all trades master of non soccermon camera, but nearly everytime at the top of the class. As can be seen by the work Wild Ranger here, it is a very capable camera for the low budget cinema film-maker in the right hand. -

@Wild Ranger, what is that shit video you showed to us, it is not 4k, it does not have 13 stop of dynamic range, it does not have super auto focus, it does not have focus peaking, it does not have IBIs............. oh I forgot it does not have RAW. More seriously, this is some damn good image, editing and trailer for your movie. Some where saying soccer mom camera in this thread. What you are showing is that an image says a thousand words, that in capable hands these Nikon's produce some very cinematic images. Bravo -

This thread has turn into a joke. It is like everything except Nikon, oh look at the night in shinning armour, yes the Pentax it has ibis produce some suppose organic image. 3 post below, oh the knight in shinning armour is all rusted. Ibis does not work in video, quirks right and left in video, no hdmi out, no 60p, etc etc.... Oh lets find another camera to discredit the Nikon, we already compared it to blackmagic, OLympus, Panasonic and now Pentax. What other we will see discussed on the suppose D5300 review thread, to show a camera that has - No moire/aliasing as the Blackmagic and Gh3 - A set of frame rate from standard cinema 24p to 60p for slow-motion. - very good DR about 1.5 to 2 stop than any other dslr/M43 camera - very good low light again better by 1.5 to 2 stop than the Bmpcc and any other Apsc dslr/m43 camera. - Proper Cine 35mm standard compared to the 1/2 smaller M43 and much smaller Bmpcc camera - Clean hdmi out, which will give you the possiblity to add some Monitor that can give you 10 times more focusing/exposure tools than most of these Apsc/M43 cameras. - Clean hdmi out that you can also record to give you a better 200 mbit codec in 422, which is much better than any of the internal codec of all the apsc/m43 cameras. Show me one of the cameras that have been compared with the D5300 who has all these features, more so at $ 799?????????? And this is not the camera that will really show the well balance Nikon dslr camera. It will be a future D7200 which will still be only $ 300 more. -

I was looking at some articles and fell on this one http://www.eoshd.com/content/11350/depth-test-5d-mark-iii-7d-raw-vs-blackmagic-pocket-vs-gh3 if the D5300 is indeed as good as the Bmpcc in prores mode like in this review. Then it must be higher than the 5dmark 3 in Raw!!!!!!!!! In fact it is not as surprising because the 5d3 is ratted at about 11.7 by dxomark in raw and the Nikon's have been rated about 12 stop in video mode from many sources.(The D4 was even rated at 13 stop by the BBC test). The d5300 puzzles me a bit from the oleg Kylian test of the 5d3 vs d5300, because the dr difference was quite huge. If Nikon has not tweaked its profiles to give even a little bit more DR than the previous cameras. I would kill to see some side by side test like the one above to have an answer for these questions. -

By perpetuating that it is a nightmare the word will stick to it and as you say yourself you quite enjoy using it. I think either the D7200 (dedicated video button and more buttons to contorl WB, iso etc and a headphone jack ) will be an upgrade in use. It is preferable to wait until nab to buy a Ninja, because I am sure that Atomos will upgrade their recorders, you might get 60 p recording in 1080p, perhaps better screen and even 4k recording. New model will surely drive the price down. -

Skiphunt, the problem is that unfortunately this is not a review, it is an article that brings up as many question as it replies. I was at least expecting a bit more factual things like this review http://www.eoshd.com/content/9653/nikon-d5200-review and what a change from the first reply in the vimeo comments from Andrew The D5100 is no benchmark for this camera. D5200 is in a completely different league when it comes to video. Nikon have made all the right kind of improvements and the sensor is completely new. In fact the Eoshd reviews have even been a bit better lately with some having the 13 stop scene with the vintage camera and film cassette for people to judge. In this case we are left with just words that for many looked to lack research (One example is the lack of Banding/fix pattern noise, which makes a big difference in the image quality between the D5200 and D5300), or a bit biased towards mirror less camera. In this article the D5300 has been compared to the DR of bmpcc, the stabilisation of the Olympus, the ergonomic of the Panasonic. Do you think it is fair to compare one camera against 3 or 4 other ones. WTF The Olympus for example has only 30p!!!!!!! the bmpcc has a smallish sensor so we are back to before the large sensor camera look and lens is a big problem and it is worst to use than the D5300. The Panasonic are better for handling but cannot compare to the image quality of the D5300 apart from sharpness. Perhaps this is the problem of Nikon, that they don’t have some catchy feature to parade above. They should perhaps add a coffee makers for bloggers and reviewers witness its cameras. Building a well balance camera with good to very good qualities is not just fancy enough. Until we find someone to really test the D5300 or future D7200, all these speculation will go on and on. Because some of us know or are still guessing that these cameras are little gem more so for their price. If you look at image from the review above the D5200 was killing the gh3 in low light. If you see the example from oleg kylan from Matt the D5300 is again killing the Canon 5dmark 3 in DR. Looking at the review above is a little bit ironic for me, because I realise that it is because of Andrew that I started investigating the new Nikon and chose to buy a Nikon D7100, then a Ninja rather than buying a D600 and selling my gh2 as my secondary body for my d800 (photography). I even thought about BMC and then Bmpcc, but it was too inconvenient with my already established Nikon lens and the post workflow. There are a lot of things I am with Andrew on the fact that Nikon could do much more, but a review should be a review with set parameters and controlled situation for a fare result. Then it is up to eveyone to decide if the camera meets his criteria or not. -

No I did not waste my energy, I just put markets fact and figures and not just your speculative that American will in time buy the M43 cameras because (bigger is better syndrome). What the figure are telling is not slow growth but negative growth. So do you think that the filmaking buyers will be enough to sustain a Panasonic M43 division by itself. Do you think that selling the gh4 in the ten's of thousand will be equal to Nikon selling the D5300 in the hundred's of thousand or even millions. In the end if Panasonic does sell enough M43 camera they will just stop doing it and their biggest market by far is the photographers. And it will be a shame if it happens. Guess what, I think Nikon i working feverishly to implement good to very good video autofocus in there camera, to cater for..................... The soccer moms to put just beside the Baby button. Because for now it is the soccermoms that won't like the Nikon cameras because half of their shots are going to be out of focus when they put it on all automatic. -

Matt I think that the term nightmare is not appropriate. I don't know why on the internet people always talk to extremes when camera X will blow camera Y because it has 4 megapixel more, 1/2 stop more DR etc etc. Put a loupe on the back screen, add a pistol grip if you need more handling, or add rail system etc etc. You can also add a Ninja and get peaking, false colour/zebras for exposure, visual sound monitoring and a 3.5 jack to monitor with a headphone. I don't have any of these unless you buy a Cannon 5dmark 3 in the canon world. So you have all these solution and when the the $ +300 D7200 will have a weather sealed metal body with a headphone jack and all the buttons so that you have to go very rarely in the menu. So I would not say nightmare in case of the D5300 handling. -

Hi tosvus it should be the mirroless crowd who should be afraid > As you can see from the latest numbers the sale of Mirrorless is down by 47% while the dslr only by 12%. So if I was you I would be a bit concern because Panasonic has given an ultimatum to all its branches, either you get profitable or we close the section down. I am sure that I will still be able to buy Nikon cameras in 10 to 20 years. By then they perhaps will have but some evf in place of the mirror system, but I am not loosing my full frame d800 quality optical viewfinder for some video geekness. There is a plethora of other ways from back lcd with a loupe and external monitor or evf to use. They, and I completely understand them, are not going to alienate millions of photographers that cater for 95% of their business to put today's inferior evf comparer to optical viewfinder. I feel dumb to write what I wrote above, because I think that Panasonic is doing a fantastic job with the gh line, but it was... For soccer mum ... when people have been doing fantastic job with much lesser Canon cameras the last 7 years. -

I disagree completely, A cinema 35mm sensor, with 12 stop DR and great low light that can even do 200 422 mbit prores is a much better tool than doing just some shitty Home movies. Someone posted this done with the D5200 I think which is about the same with the banding -

I am of those who think that the review should have been more factual like side by side between camera like we have seen from other your reviews before. It would have given us a better idea of how the camera compares to the other ones. Then at least to a certain extent anyone can make his own conclusion and then take into account your own and decide what is good for him. Each an everybody don't have the same priorities. I don't understand for example how the D5300 can get such criticism about functionality while the pocket which is even more complicated to use is not criticise as much. For a fare test they should both be criticise for their lack of video feature. For example the Bmpcc screen is a nightmare and you can not know how much time you still have on a card and you cannot erase a file for example. You only have a 1 gb per minute mode and need very fast and costly card. The pocket wins in some and loose in some (DR, resolution), but the rest the D5300 is more than a match. But that does not mean that one is much better than the other. for some higher resolution, 13 stop of DR, 10 bit, and 16 mm look is good. For others 12 stop of DR, 8 bit, super lowlight, slow motion and Cine 35mm without moire/aliasing is better. You can even add an external recorder for $ 300 or $ 700. that will give you much better codec and 422, in the case of the Ninja peaking, false colour, zebra etc. The last thing I would add is that this is an entry level $ 800 camera and that it is what it is. A camera more for the family photos, that is why we cannot expect pro ergonomic and features. What is extraordinary is that we are even discussing this camera in an enthusiast pro forum is a feat by itself. In 3 to 6 month this camera will be at $ 700 and you will have a D7200 with a much better body... and perhaps the only weakness of the D5300, which is better resolution. Don't tell me why but the D7100 is sharper than the D5200 and as sharp as the gh2. -
http://***URL not allowed***/?p=23465 Cinema 5d has done a little review and states that it is the best image out of an Apsc dslr and very frustrating to use. Unfortunately for me as always we read more than we see. It seems that putting this camera side by side of another camera to show how it behaves in terms of DR, resolution, low light etc is too much. I hope someone does a good thorough test of this camera, looking at the response I guess the Nikon is starting to get some momentum in the video dslr users even if it is not fancy enough.

Thanks for the review, I am in some ways as anoyed as you about Nikon having all the tech but not using it to the fullest. I have been saying it for ages, if they want to make a splash in video world, they should do some revolutionary steps like at least internal 10 bit high bitrate or even raw nowadays. But credit should be given to them where it is due. I think that Nikon thought that giving uncompressed hdmi out 2 years ago would have done the trick, but unfortunately they could not guest that, most other manufacturer would follow rapidly and that Blackmagic and ML would follow. Taking them outside of the highlight. But in the mean time they have been constantly updating there camera to sampling more pixel and downscaling to get rid of moire/aliasing and giving very good low light and now adding 60fps at 1080p. More so that they are implementing those tech in there entry level camera first, not afraid to cannibalize there higher end camera at least in the video side. That is why you find yourself in the situation as you mentioned in your article that the low end camera is better than the higher end one. Would you have preferred that they keep that tech until they update the D4, D800, D600 and D7100. They are actually updating their camera line with the expeed 4 and a new D4s has been announced and we can expect a D7200 in the near future. The only problem is the Sony based Sensor D800 and D610 which might only do line skipping and that is perhaps why Nikon has been abandoning Sony sensors. You have also been comparing the D5300 against a plethora of other cameras and each of them with their fort. The D5300 does not beat any of them at one thing but it might be todays most balance camera in the DSLR world. It might not match the 13 stop of DR of the pocket, But it matches by your say in Proress mode and so should be 1 to 1.5 stop better than the Canons. But it has a Cine 35 mm sensor, no ugly moire/aliasing and will surely beat it in low light and you can do good slow motion. You could even add an external recorder to get high bitrate. Talking about external recorder, I have a Ninja with my D7100 and it really completes the Nikons, apart from the obvious high bitrate, you get peaking, false colour, zebras, sound monitoring in a very compact package. I think the d7200 will be the Nikon camera to get shortly for photo/video hybrid Nikon users. The body will be much better in terms of button and construction. I don't know why the D5200/D5300 (perhaps Nikon doin it deliberately to differentiate camera), But the D7100 is nearly as sharp as a gh2. With a Ninja it is even sharper. My guess is that a D7200 would be very very close to a Canon C100 and have equal functionality with a Ninja with the added bonus of 60p for 1/3 the price. Again I would have liked Nikon to be bolder, but this camera might not be better than any other camera in any specific domain, but it is good to very good in nearly every aspect of a camera. It would have been very nice to see it on one of your chart/scene to be able to compare it with the other cameras. -
Vere very nice video, my only little gripe is the focussing. I would have preferred some shots with a deeper dof in some cases.
