Escapist reacted to aldolega in GH4: List of quirks and problems
I would say that the 50% improved rolling shutter and super-high stock bitrate for All-I are both strong talents of the camera. Unfortunately neither are available in 4K mode. So they may not be the fan's flashiest talent, or your personal favorite, but they're talents nonetheless. Jello reduction and motion rendition are high priorities for some people, and forgoing resolution in their interest wouldn't be wasting any talents at all for those users.

Don't get me wrong, I'm super excited to use 4K for great 1080p finish- when I can get away with it, motion- and jiggle-wise- but let's remember that the GH3's 1080p modes are already very, very good. Assuming the GH4's are at least a nominal improvement on that, it is still a worthwhile camera outside of 4K mode.

    Hi!
It's one of my first posts here but not the funniest I guess…
I'm not especially talking about a magic C-lens in particular here but about a very underestimated question: radioactive lenses!
One of my friends is a fireman captain and introduced me yesterday to one of his colleagues specialized in technological risks and chemical dangers (at Poissy, France : they're known to have very great equipments.) We made 3 different tests on all my Russian lenses which are all OK excepted the Mamiya Sekor 55mm f1.4 (M42).
    Here are the results:
From 5 to 10 µSV per hour (by direct touch), and 1720 shocks per second.
    Element involved is Thorium 232.
They told I really shouldn't keep it. Work with it more than one hour is dangerous. It must be gifted to specialized services and absolutely not be destroyed! Or thrashed! The most dangerous exposure isn't even radiations but dusts to inhalate or ingerate (when a lens gets old it disaggregates - it's something you can't always clearly see).
I'm lucky cause until today I kept it in my basement.
So, say it please to your friends and all potential Mamiya/Takumar users that you know via websites etc, it's a strong matter of health.

The tools have gotten so good at the low end that it really becomes not a question of equipment, but a question of ability.

You're making it sound only about the lens. What about the nut behind the camera!?

The 18-35 is very nice, almost as sharp as the Cookes.

Escapist reacted to Quirky in Black Magic Camera over heats and sets camera on fire
As far as I've understood, the BMPCC is using a peltier cooling system, which uses a lot of battery power, but the heat is dissipated into the camera body via the cooling element, it's not the battery that generates the heat. So the body getting pretty warm at times is normal.

In theory a component breaking inside that cooling system could possibly cause problems. But it's pointless to speculate, as we really don't know anything. It could still be a number of reasons.

It's the 2010's, and the whole mainstream media has become brain dead. Click baiting and copy&paste journalism are the new normal.

Oh come on, don't join yet another internet lynch mob, and help propagating yet another pointless (and often purposeful) internet meme. Let's not be played by yet another silly distraction for all the wrong reasons. This isn't worth it.

There are at least two sides to this story, too, and we don't really know either of them. All we know that a camera started (apparently) overheating for some unknown reason, that's all. What BM will or won't do as a consequence is none of our worries. Some (now viral) online video won't make it our business. People were criticising the uploading of that video without all the facts, and the way the controversial video now gets promoted online as "news." It has nothing to do with BM per se.
So let's move along, shall we.

I think there will be a lot of people cancelling and jumping on the canon raw parade.  so pre orders are probably diminishing as we speak.

I'm hoping everyone cancels, jumps on the shallow dof bandwagon like back in 2009 (but this time with raw), and leaves the smaller more tactful sensor size less used leaving potential for us who are sticking with it with the aesthetic edge.

I have to say I'm on the cusp of looking at a 5dmk3, but the idea of a silky smooth s16mm sensor (and its limitations) is one that is very attractive to me, where most are hankering after a larger sensor again.

though i´m a 5d mark3 owner, i absolutely agree with you. for the most paid things the 5d mark raw is not a solution. even if the hack gets stable. the data rates alone make it impossible to use for documentary shooting for example. i´m really happy that this hack exists and i can play around with it but let´s see if it becomes a good way to work. i doubt it.
i also think you all should not blame canon so much. it´s a normal strategy for companies to offer different product for different prices and costumers. for example i know somebody how works for bmw in the development. the 316, the 318 and the 320i have the same engine, they just crippled the lower end engines and sell them cheaper. it´s more efficient to produce a higher number of engines and make them less strong for lower end cars, the to produce 3 different engines. all bmw would be much more expensive if they would produce 3 different engines. even if canon  would would use the same sensor in the 600d and the mk3, i would still buy the mark3, because i want a magnesium body and not a plastic camera.
for example the canon ef 50mm 1,4 and the ef 50mm 1,2 are both very good lenses. but the 50mm 1,2 has a much better build quality and a bit better image and it costs 5 times the price. but if you work every day with this lens and earn money with it, then you maybe wanna buy it. i don´t start thinking is this really 5 times better then the 50 1,4? or is canon a greedy bitch because of this? i just think about if the things, this pro lens offers, is worth the more money for me personally. it´s easy like that.
i mean who would think the 5d mark raw is the right tool for one when he works every day with it? and i don´t mean making test shots and playing around. this is important to do and i´m really thankful that it´s been done, but if i can get a nearly the same image quality then the mark raw with a proress codec, and a good handling of the camera and the post workflow. this doesn´t sound too bad for me.
it´s really funny that everybody buys canon and complains about them at the same time... lol

Don't get me wrong, I totally agree with you on the value of the C-series. Yes, I would say without a doubt in my mind there are pricing issues. it's not for everyone, but RAW isn't either. I guess it's going to be an uphill battle as many of the claims on raw here are just borderline cult-like and I haven't seen much respectable inquiry into the subject.

Escapist reacted to leo in Canon 1D C vs 5D Mark III Raw (and C300 / GH2 resolution comparison)
Anyone who's done a bit of photography knows the power of raw but it's way to much trouble for anything  more than experimental work.
Someone earlier asked for advice on a camera for events, well, nothing comes close to a gh3, you can have the mother of all hacks that gives you 4k,8k, doesn't matter, it's a hack that has severe limitations and in the end you can't risk go to a job with unstable gear.
First I was excited but then I thought, if you have the money you can have c300, fs700 with future 4k upgrade and already amazing ISO that obliterates 5d mark3, sure 5d  is nice but serious event videographers are switching to the real deal, real cameras designed for this.
Now about the gh3 vs tons of DSLR's that offer better iso, sure 5d gives way better iso, even Nikons do now but then you look at other things, silent autofocus, touch screen autofocus, wayyy lighter and easier for long steadycam shots, sharper image, articulated screen, tons of settings for making it easier and faster.
Then you think about the ISO, when do I ever use iso 6400 or even more, in events ( by events I mean weddings ) almost never, you light it or carry a lamp is need it but with a fast prime you can go anywhere, so you probably max at  3200 and very very rarerly, and you have neat video to clean up the footage.
In my opinion if it is for events go for cheap gh3's or expensive c100,c300,fs100,fs700, market changed in what it can offer, if years ago DSLR's where the only thing to give amazing iso and easy SDOF now we have a hell of a lot of choices.
