  1. Nice shots OlofStorm.... Good to see someone who doesn't mind pushing the blacks up in the grade.   Too many people are desperate to show every last drop of DR, rather than actually trying to create a great look.
  2. 12 bit will still be very, very good for all aspects of the image (RED One is 12 bit, irrc)   I've never heard of 10bit raw, but a 10bit log file holds DR very well (F3 is a good example), so could still be great.
  3. I'm certainly not underestimating it (the 5Draw).... It's taking all my will not to order one, right now... But i just don't need to shoot until September and have already shot every inch of where i live with a RED-MX, so will let the dust settle on all these options. The DSLR format keeps pulling me in though, i imagine i will have a 5DIII here within a month :D I do think the FS700 is worth keeping an eye on though.... It is alot of camera for $11k (the F5 would be closer to $20k, with an odyssey for 4K) ... and every chance it could hit the 14 stops DR of it's bigger brothers.....
  4. It might do, when raw is enabled. It could very well exceed it, Sony's sensors are usually very, very good. 14bit 2K/240p raw is gonna be very interesting (but still pricey).
  5. Anyone seen a 48p/50p/60p test? I'd love to see how the quality blows up to 1080p.... I'm sure it's usable.
  6. I've just now finally had the time to take a look at Bloom's post.   What is the problem? He is clearly impressed and supportive of what ML are doing and says the resolution and DR are greatly improved. His discussion about the reasons that raw can be a hindrance are balanced and legitimate. He also goes on to gripe about the filesize and workflow of the 1-DC, not exactly in fitting with the idea of him being some kind of Canon spokesperson.   I wonder how many people here actually read the article... Or just the headline? (A huge problem in all internet forums and debates).   Here is an extract.... Are these the words of someone who has dismissed the hack and is, in any way, unsupportive of their efforts?   "Now with the additional excitement of the new Magic Lantern hack which has quite incredibly brought raw video to the 5DmkIII, the raw clamour has reached unparalleled heights. Although this hack is still in a very early stage, it will undoubtedly reach a more stable level pretty soon, and everyone will be desperate to shoot everything in raw on the MKIII. Why? Because it’s raw…you know? It’s better. Yep. It is. A hell of a lot better. Not just that, but the image itself is better than the MkIII is able to give us normally. There is more detail, and with raw much more dynamic range of course. There are are a number of big caveats though which I will get to…but the achievement of these people is incredible and should be applauded hugely."
  7. Better to stick to reporting about the great work ML are doing.   You are doing them a disservice by making this issue about you and the other bloggers.... Who cares if they have a different opinion than you or even what motivates them.   You are doing good work reporting and testing the ever changing ML advances. That's all we need.
  8. btw - i wasn't knocking the people experimenting with the 2 second 4K.... quite the opposite. I've made a fair chunk of change selling 6mpx 60p from a crappy casio EX-F1
  9. I just don't get why people who are working in full time studio setups, where alpha hacks wont be considered, are even checking this out and telling us how useless it currently is. This is 99% a forum of indies, low budget guys, people who will jump through hoops for image quality. Hell, people were excited about 2 seconds of raw only last month.... surely that was a pretty strong clue as to the thought process of alot of folk on here? If it is not the way some of you work, that's fine.... But don't tell us how wrong or unprofessional we are to think about using it. Some of us are risk takers, some of us can afford to be, for one reason or another (doing work for friends, experimenting, open minded clients etc etc). I remember dropping a plastic fish tank and some weights onto the first step of our swimming pool and placing my hvx in there to get stock underwater footage... Is that the way studio guys would do it? Of course not.... Was it stupid? In hindsight, probably..... Did it looks great, hell yea... did it make me money? double hell yea.
  10. Like i said, different ways, different clients... some of us are 1-2 man teams who make all the creative decisions, pre-prod... shoot... edit. We can make stuff happen. If that doesn't suit your way of working, then fine. I don't really see why you would care about how or why someone 1000 of miles from you might use a camera.... But knock yourself out.
  11. Why do people insist on pushing their methods onto someone else, as if there is only one way to do something? Maybe you and i work in very different ways, on very different clients.... As long as i'm getting paid and the client is happy... then surely my methods are as valid as yours? Even if i jump through a million hoops to make it work. What would you prefer, if you had a blank canvas.... a 5dIII with this raw hack or a HVX200? Some will take the 1st and do a great job, some will take the 2nd and do a great job.... Some will do a bad job regardless.
  12. You would just edit over the 1 second or so missed by clicking the record button though.... not perfect, but i'd have zero concerns about timing my editing around those moments (on that specific video). Or, just multicam it and stagger your recordings.
  13. Yep, when i first saw the creative cloud deal... my jaw hit the floor. So much cheaper than the constant buying and upgrading i had been doing.   I think the best part though, is exploring software that I never really checked out before. I''m now getting pretty good in illustrator... Something i had avoided due to yet another extra purchase and upgrade path.   All the people complaining about this being some kind of trap seem to be forgetting that the paid upgrade path is every bit a trap too... More so even, as if you miss a couple of version upgrades, you can sometimes find your upgrade path is no longer valid.
  14. Do you want to try a be a little more patronising? Music videos can be beautiful, with just as much thought and effort going into them as a narrative. Some of the most talented people i know "only shoot music videos". This, to me at least, is just as creative and interesting as a narrative... If not more so.... and could easily be put together with even 30 second takes.
  15. Andrew, could you test the 720/60p when you get chance? Or is that still a work in progress?
  16. It's a good point Brellivids.... But at some point, you just have to put your trust in a company and hope for the best. I've made plenty of money from Adobe products and they have been pretty fair over the years i have used them, about 15 year and counting.   I don't have to worry about paying for upgrades anymore.... and as i use several products in various creative fields, that added up, every time they upgraded.   For most creatives, it is about an hours work or less to pay off the monthly subscription to creative cloud. Even if they doubled it, which is unlikely, it would be easy to soak up the costs, if you are using several products.
  17. As a designer, photographer and videographer.... I absolutely love it. Amazing value.
  18. commercials.... alot of people's bread and butter. Stock video too, really useful. people get a bit too insular on here, thinking everyone who uses a camera is working on narrative. That said, it will still make a great B camera for wide shots or super shallow DOF, low light etc. If you are shooting long takes, interviews or weddings, yea... forget this unless the hdmi mode works out.
  19. Really depends what you are shooting.... For music videos and similar.... 40 seconds is fine.
  20. I agree, ideally any tests should use the very best settings for the h264
  21. It wasn't fog! That is a forest on a mountian, literally about 100ft from being above cloud level, that is cloud running through the trees... and the light was very, very bright. Maybe not the best example, after all.... but it was very harsh shooting conditions. I'm sure a Nikon would get a bit more highlight and shadow, but what i was saying was that the Canon sensor is enough for most any shot. Certainly up there with RED MX sensor. But all the latest videos are showing just how good these sensors are. Literally can't wait to get my hands on this next ML.
  22. Any improvement is welcome.... Can't use raw on every shot   But yea, interesting timing. Maybe trying to get the keywords "canon" "raw" and "video" directed to them.
