  1. The idea that because the camera costs X, anything else should cost Y is an impossible mission for manufacturers. Look at cinema grade lenses.... They can be upwards of $100k for the very best.   If i had $10k for equipment.... I'd rather have a GH3, some lighting and one of these gizmos than a Scarlet with a tripod.
  2. I'm not a huge fan of Cult RED..... But Jannard set out to make a camera to replace film, and from what the Dragon has shown, he looks like he has achieved his goals, so fair play to him and happy retirement.   I think him leaving the CEO role is perfect for RED though.... Hopefully now they can work like a proper company... Open distribution centres, customer service centres worldwide. Stop obsessing about just 4K+ and get a damn 1080p Module working and just go about their business with less fighting and posturing.   I might then start thinking seriously about going RED.
  3. I used to use this trick to get 60p from 60i footage on my Sony EX-F1.... The resolution drop really isn't that noticable, it will be usable for certain shots.   It's a free little feature, so just test it and see if you like it. If i were delivering a wedding video or something, a few 60i to 60p shots would probably work well and i doubt anywould would notice the drop in resolution, because they would be enjoying the slow motion effect.
  4. I know what aliasing is, i just don't think it is what we are seeing in this instance.   I personally think it is over sharpened noise. I will shoot some wires or tiles to make a better test for traditional aliasing. I've never had serious aliasing issues with iphone 5 jpgs, so i'm not sure why a frame burst would change that.
  5. I don't see any aliasing, as such.... Perhaps you are looking at the over sharpening that apple adds, coupled with the compression?
  6. I think the problem with an Android version is the massive differences in CPU, camera specs etc etc between phones.
  7. Here is a 1 second sample at 3200x1600   Right click and download (330mb)   http://stylecreative.net/uploads/iphone5.mov
  8.   He is using it wrong then, tell him to go into settings and change the field of view to narrow, that is full 6mpx (but you get less frames)
  9. I tried it out, works quite well, but not really suitable for video. Only get about 70frames in 6mpx mode   1080p mode gets about 200 frames and is pretty damn sharp. The jello is dreadful though.   It's a handy little app though, even just to play around with.   I'll post some footage soon
  10. re: Europe   http://www.creativevideo.co.uk/index.php?t=product/blackmagic_cinema_camera   Obviously, we will never get it for $2000 usd, in Europe, but the above has the new pricing.
  11. 1. Yes, with an adapter   2. Alot of mFT lenses need power just to set the iris, zoom etc.
  12. At such a price, it must be a loss leader, or at the very best, breaking even.... Getting filmmakers to move over to Resolve and into their system
  13. http://techcrunch.com/2013/07/31/fastest-iphone-camera/   Sounds quite interesting.... I'll test it out later and report back.
  14. Agree, i've been testing it like mad and haven't had any shots yet that aren't awash with stair stepping.   Certainly interesting though.
  15. It's workable, with a bit of reflector light   What i mean is that about 5% of shots would need that level of DR, even if you have light
  16. As stated in the Vimeo description   "This test was designed to be a worst case scenario. Bright light in a dim room room including fabric textures to help reveal moire."   I think this beast can be tamed... and, let's remember, only about 5% of shots would ever need more than the base 12 stops of DR.... So it is a good little tool to have.... I'd rather deal with some moire/aliasing then have blown whites or very noisy shadows.
  17. 5DIII has much better hardware, so we are gonna get some benefits that others wont.   Most images the midtones take up the majority of the image, so I don't think the resolution drop will be substantial..... Certainly not h264 level resolution, i'm sure.   Can't wait to test it.
  18. http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=7139   Quoted from A1ex:   "Time for the first real image quality improvement in ML history Here's a trick that samples half of the sensor at ISO 100 and the other half at ISO 1600, for example. If you mix these two, you can get almost the entire dynamic range the sensor is capable of (around 14 stops). 5D3/7D only. There are no motion artifacts; not even a difference in motion blur for the two exposures. So, it works well for fast moving subjects."
  19.   There are 1000s of samples out there.     I don't think there is anything ambiguous about the term cinema.... It just means an image that will stand up in any cinema and the viewer wouldn't really notice a difference in IQ from film or Alexa/RED
  20. spam, self promotion.. whatever.   if you are not connected to that product, i'll eat my camera and film it with my phone while using innovative products to focus it
  21. I'm happy with my 5DIII.... Gonna stop looking and dreaming about the next big thing.   I have a cinema grade camera and professional grade DSLR
  22. That doesn't sound at all like a spam post
  23.   I would think the smaller sensor would help for sports? I use the 5DIII crop mode for surf shots and the like.
  24. Realistically, if you are sweating over the price of a 5dIII, you probably already have your answer.... Are you even set up for a raw workflow? Expensive CF cards, TBs of harddrives, probably a new CPU, GPU and more ram? You will still need an audio solution, probably a monitor solution too.   What about the 50D, seems like a good compromise
