  1. Totally legit, good job. Some of the shots of the Golden Gate were amazing. Also, the arial shots were sick. I can't believe how stable and great the footage looks on those quad copter rigs.

I wouldn't be surprised if import fees are expensive or not worth the effort.

Well, it's not like there is an American manufacturer taking over the niche, so I don't think import fees have much to do with it (which haven't changed much and are relatively low).  I just don't think there is any demand for this stuff. The phones are what kill this market, and those are manufactured overseas too.

  3. Things like bit depth really matter for post. I can approximate  higher bit depth by downsampling from higher resolution, but the individual precision of each pixel remains the same. So in certain cases, you won't pickup subtle changes in tone.

And all else being equal, down-sampling does not afford you better dynamic range.  And 4K raw is still way too much data, so you will lose something by going to 4K.

As for content delivery, almost eveyone is still stuck below 1080p (besides Blu-Ray). iTunes, Netflix, Cable, almost all of their HD looks like heavily compressed 720p or 1080i.

The Canon c300 is a special case, because it uses its 4K sensor not just to down-sample intelligently, but to minimize motion artifacts.  Most of the 4K cameras that are going to come out won't be using the same process, and therefore won't get the same benefit from a 4K sensor.

  4. Not disagreeing with any of the advice but..,

Remember, when comparing the Sigma to the Rok 35mm you should shift everything on the mtf chart to the right for the BMPoC, since you will only be using the center of image circle on the Rok (because of crop factor). The difference in sharpness is a bit exaggerated otherwise.  Also, if you ever upgrade to full frame, you won't be able to use the Sigma.

  5. The L lenses are good, but the color can be inconsistent across lenses.

I highly recommend the Rokinon 24mm.  It's my favorite lens. It goes back and forth between my BMCC and 5D.

The 16mm is definately less sharp, and its APSC so you can't use it on full frame. I have it, but I don't use it that much (but mostly because I love the 24mm so much)

Sigma 18-35 is another popular lens. Sharp, versatile,  but it is APSC also.

  6. I will likely look into that one or newer, as I'd like to run Resolve. Thanks for the info, HurtinMinorKey.

On rethinking the above, I actually also have an older 2008 Mac Pro tower here that I hadn't considered. It has a default ATI 2600XT GPU. Any suggestions for GPU upgrades? I'm hoping that marrying the Mac Pro with a LED display or such would not only be the cheaper route, in my case, but would also allow me to repurpose it.

I think the 680 GTX will work with your old mac pro

This is significantly more powerful than the 680MX mentioned above, but it's not cheap.
