  1. Interesting if true, thank you. If in some readout modes, the 14bit colour depth, wide gamut and translation to 8bit Rec.709 is done on-sensor that would perhaps explain why there are no SLOG or Picture Profiles in silent shutter mode on cameras like the A7R IV too. If the sensor lacks the onboard brain to do LOG then it may explain why Sigma Fp doesn't have LOG either, similar Sony sensor.
  2. I think the sensor can run for around 1 hour in 8K with image processing externally. No chance BRAW is being added in-camera. Externally I still don't see it happening to be honest!
  3. BRAW on the EOS R5 is never going to happen. And EOS R6 doesn't even have Canon's own RAW!
  4. Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, etc. could have got stuff anywhere at any time, I think the decision largely boils down to Sony winning the tender before the other manufacturers even got a look in because it was perhaps a done deal with Sony marketing material in the tender (like AP saying it needs "cut & paste from Sony"... eh, I mean "silent shutter") That's what I hear on the grape vine anyway 🙂 Plus the financial terms probably quite favourable. But also, Canon didn't have a pro mirrorless camera available at the time the decision was made, and neither did Nikon, both with limited mirrorless lens ranges too.
  5. No, I'll review it based on what shit people say on Chinese forums.
  6. You are just making wild assumptions. You don't know what the actual percentages are at all. In all the marketing video is top billing. Has to tell you something.
  7. This is a bit befuddling: "The vast majority of the stills photographers will get a9 Mark IIs. We will get some a7R IVs for the videographers...But the standard kit will be an a9 Mark II." A7R IV for the videographers? The only advantage it has over the A9 II for the videographer is literally just SLOG. So I assume they are going to use SLOG otherwise why get "A7R IVs for the videographers"
  8. From the director of photography AP: "We liked the idea of having the color quality and the image quality being close to the same between stills and video equipment. So if a stills photographer helped out a video colleague with a little filming, or B-roll, it would fit in the edit. And if we were to pull a frame grab from a 4K video camera it would have the same basic feel as a photograph from a stills camera." So it doesn't sound like a good idea to use Sony defaults on A9 II and try to match it to FS line to me. Surely better to shoot S-LOG on both and match in post with same LUT on each. A LUT does not actually slow down your turn-around. I assume professional news editors know how to use one. 10 seconds, click, done.
  9. Can somebody do a Hilter meme of the Canon boss hearing about this please?
  10. This is the key point. EF and the range of DSLR lenses has been an advantage for so long and now it's practically in the bin Why does the 1D X Mark III have LOG then? Did all the pros say "No"? I think you may want to revisit your made-up reasoning there.
  11. https://www.smallrig.com/blog/no-more-concerns-about-the-overheating-of-canon-r5/ I like their sense of humour! However you can do the survey too and tell them what you'd like to see. We will definitely get some sort of fan cage from someone!
  12. Just get on the same chinese forums as he does and find out yourself!
  13. Interesting there is an interview with the southern tweed wearing hipster at DPReview: https://www.dpreview.com/interviews/2999935759/interview-we-talk-to-ap-director-of-photography-about-switch-to-sony I think if silent shutter is a big motivation to go Sony, it shows Canon should be doing some sort of hybrid EVF on the 1D X series in future. One that allows the silent shutter to work through the viewfinder rather than only on the back screen. A camera with no viewfinder isn't very much use to a professional in bright daylight!
  14. Interesting move. This is partly because Canon's mirrorless camera system is so late in the game. And Nikon's mirrorless system is mainly aimed at consumers. Sony could learn a lot from the AP use of their fleet. The A9 II should really get S-LOG now in a firmware update. I expect the photographers, some kitted out with A7R IV and some with A9 II to have the same colour science and video formats available between them.
  15. I like it so much I am tempted to send it in. Will have to find a way to check they are trustworthy and ensure it comes back without a whacking great tax bill. It would be good if they supplied it as a kit, I am handy with a screwdriver and could probably do it myself. If the ribbon cable doesn't snap that is. Wonder if we ask nicely enough they will send the parts?
  16. Looks great. I think I'll do it when they are up and running with final version in September.
  17. New firmware should be interesting. Bring on the ducks in 8K.
  18. A short video in Japanese (turn on the English captions)! It's great that he actually shoots.
  19. Probably due to the sensor dropping from 14bit to 10bit or 8bit readout mode to achieve the higher speeds.
  20. I was thinking of gathering the most dramatic and moody shots from my old Berlin pieces and editing them together back to back with new 2020 shots. The beautiful empty haunting Spreepark with the old rusting rides before it was neutered and sanitised, prepped to become an 'eco park'. The empty spaces, in contrast to the rammed streets now and visual shit in every corner (e-scooters, adverts the size of buildings). The eccentricity of earlier shots, the minimalism and the kind of personalities I saw on the streets, in contrast to the uniform start-up scene joggers and Kardashian wannabes that populate the streets now with their identical Instagram face mask make-up and sunglasses. It is social engineering basically. When you select for the most lucrative rental contracts, the city becomes an office and a shop, but the empty spaces die taking the ghosts with them and all that's interesting outside of commerce.
  21. Yes I agree. Of course it's easier than cinema. More accessible. You can create junk and still get paid. Kids at school aspire to be YouTubers instead of filmmakers or actors. The next gen aspire to be social media influencers and shills. They don't want to be musicians (takes skill) or TV celebrities (what's TV?!) TV virtually doesn't exist for the next generation, that's for their parents. They are brought up on internet content. We don't know what the end result of this will be but I can take a guess. Our culture will be emptied out of all intelligence and our lives will revolve around numbers, views and consumer choice. Giving people what they want, and more and more. Seeking greater and greater thrills, until burn out hits and we wake up empty of any meaningful internal dialogue with ourselves, or others.
  22. I think you've hit the nail on the head. They are so relentless, so dominant, so hungry and take up so much attention and real estate that the intelligent and artistic minority are squeezed like never before and will soon vanish completely from our cities. And the same is happening online. The reason I don't shoot Berlin vignettes and mood pieces any more is that there is no mood, no beauty to it. The place is being wreaked. Everywhere is.
  23. Again I'm not so much interested in the personal or individual targets (just examples to illustrate a wider point)... I am sure she is a success at what she does. But Mediocrity is the new gold standard it seems. The most successful and highest watched are those who have put the most vapid eye candy on social media and marketed themselves most effectively. And it's all very middle class. Whilst the actual interesting voices, the ones without so many sponsors or the backing of a corporation to gain them attention, go wasting away and eventually will give up because the system is rigged against them from the start. Have you walked around the streets of Berlin recently and seen for yourselves how many Kim Kardashian bozos there are driving around in big expensive cars their Kayne West husband bought for them, off the back of his 'how the hell did that make money' bozo business idea? Our culture is going to shit and we casually excuse it every day.
