Ah well spotted. Nice camera, but LX100 is far better specced.

As a twist of fate would have it, found a used 1D C for £4999 and it arrives Tuesday. C U next Tuesday 1D C Now we will see what it's really made of vs the A7S and Shogun.

Fuji X30 I think. Small compact.

OK, this is the last time I take the bait and wade into 1D C la la land again. Then the discussion has to go back to the Shogun. Remember, the NX1 and GH4 are also in the mix here with the Shogun and 4K ProRes. This is the article Doug is moaning about http://www.eoshd.com/2014/07/25-ways-sony-a7s-trumps-canon-1d-c/ As far as I can see, he hasn't got an argument about the facts in the article, just a lot of hot air. To summerise: A7S is full frame. 1D C is a 1.3x crop. You lose the edges of your full frame lenses and go outside the edges of your APS-C lenses. Not much of an advantage is that. A7S is better in low light. I can expose a clean image at 25,600 and get usable results way beyond. 1D C is ok at 6400 but noisy at 12,800. Codec - A7S goes to ProRes for 4K. With the 1D C you are stuck to MJPEG, which isn't as efficient. Granted it is internal though, so call it a draw on that one for 4K. The internal 1080p codec & quality is better on the A7S. The 1D C only does acceptably high quality 1080p out of the HDMI port, and even then it is an APS-C crop, not full frame. If you need 30p the A7S does it in 4K. 1D C does not. Shogun SSD media cheaper for 4K recording than buying tons of big fast compact flash cards for MJPEG 4K on the 1D C. Then to round it out, A7S does not need sending to service centre for firmware update. Price difference. Mirrorless lens mount. EVF. Smaller, lighter, silent shutter for stills (12MP raws). PL lens compatibility. On the 1D C side, you have internal 4K recording so handy for without a recorder, but thing is you need the screen, because the live-view functionality and focus aids are all stills based on the 1D C and useless for shooting video. Not so on the A7S. I can't see the problem with the logic here. 1D C has a lovely image. It's a better stills camera. It has internal 4K. It's more robustly built and looks more professional. It has a native Canon mount for those who use a lot of EF lenses. But it doesn't have much else over the A7S considering the $8000-10,000 or so price difference.

Canon hint at mirrorless future “global shutter makes sense”
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I think lenses are the most important product at Canon. It is where the margin is and the most income overall, they sell a ton of glass. That's the reason they're not in the mirrorless market. It would have shifted the focus of the consumer away from their biggest asset, the EOS range of lenses. Canon will likely make their next mirrorless system another low end affair targeting young people & selfie shooters, it won't be a serious pro system or something to rival Sony or Fuji, more like the Nikon 1 system but with an APS-C sensor. The "mirrorless" Canon will eventually do will be EF mount with global shutter, just the mirror & mechanical shutter removed. DSLR form factor and ergonomics will remain because their customers rely on the familiarity. The system might even still have optics in there to serve the optical viewfinder. It certainly won't happen until EVFs are way more advanced than currently. Actually, an EF mount camera with no mirror and global shutter would be just fine by me! The miniaturisation and re-design of cameras you can do with mirrorless can come with a lot of trade offs. The Cinema EOS line can be considered Canon's first mirrorless cameras. Shame the EVFs are so poor. -
I love America and I think capitalism is the more successful way of life by far in terms of what it offers for innovation, wealth generation and quality of living. However in my opinion both ways of life will ultimately fail because they are abused. Communism was first drawn up in Manchester when Karl Marx visited the cotton mills. The aim of it was to improve the lives of factory workers, ultimately it has lead to their enslavement in the millions by a system that is capitalist for the rich and communism for the rest. But then Chinese culture is not synonymous with communism - it goes back much further and it's a beautiful culture. Every opposing system and culture can learn from each other. Our consumerist society has issues which a communist society doesn't have and visa versa. I think there's innovation in every system too and in every culture. It isn't a black and white, good vs evil situation. The crime rate in North Korea is virtually zero for instance. Despite the other problems in the country, that's still an achievement. Communism or capitalism shouldn't drive a wedge between us and those ordinary people & other filmmakers, who just happen to live in Russia or China. People with strong beliefs need to learn to respect opposing beliefs better than they do currently. In Europe people are largely secular which is part of why the Norwegians, Swiss, etc. usually stay out of wars. Religion drives politics to a large degree in America. Many in Europe and the UK see the US as a fundamentalist religious state, with wars waged in the name of God. There may be a dangerous "divinity problem" in North Korea but so far it hasn't killed nearly the number of people that the things done in the name of western reglion has. Religion can be a wonderful thing but combined with politics it is a danger.

And in the west it is capitalism mixed with divinity nonsense. Not too different after all.

Canon hint at mirrorless future “global shutter makes sense”
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
It'd be great to have 2 versions of the 5D optimised for stills and video respectively... under $3000. Like Cinema EOS, but for enthusiasts. Is the market big enough? I think so, otherwise they wouldn't keep making such a big deal of video in the press releases for cameras like the A7S and D750. -
Nice results. I'm getting there eventually too. And check out "colour phase" if anyone has colour to far off towards green or too magenta, that's a good setting to balance the tint in-camera as much as possible.

Have a great one, and cheers to my EOSHD friends wherever you are

Unfortunately the previous thread had to be locked due to a bug in the new forum software. This one should work 100%. Let's continue where we picked off here - http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/7671-official-atomos-shogun-thread-4k-a7s-gh4-nx1/

I'd have a difficult time without the cat videos.

It would make a great satire all of this. A much better one than The Interview serves up. In a selfie obsessed world of empty headed vanity, the next world war is started on the internet. Perhaps on a forum. Over a film. Which results in cyberwarfare, the first big cyberwar fought on the internet, where the West's internet is knocked out for years and giant Terminator drones run riot in the skies. What would we do without the internet!? And all for the sake of that stupid film! Damn!

Canon are finally on the move. They have given the strongest hints yet that they see mirrorless as the future and have several mock-up designs in the lab. This is great news for video. How long before DSLRs are phased out? Read the full article

The film is the equivalent of a racist idiot doing "ching chong china man" silly voices and peeling his eyes back, saying "hey I've got slitty eyes haha... DONG" Racism. Pure and simple.

Do you see this happening with more than one thread? I only see it affecting the Official Shogun thread at the moment. It happens when the discussion spills onto the next page. The next page isn't added. I have to go into the control panel and change the number of posts per page, then it fixes it, until it spills over onto yet another page and I have to do the same again. Really annoying. If this affects all future threads it really needs to be fixed urgently so keep an eagle eye for this one. Thanks.

Official Atomos Shogun thread (4K, A7S, GH4, NX1)
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
4000 euros / 10,000 euros, difference is 2000 euros? EH! Glad it's Sony mount. I can use my Canon glass on it AND my Leica M, PL Cookes, and no mirror to hit the back of my Pentax & Leica R stuff. Shame at change of policy. Really, you didn't. Evidently. I'm happy for you. Do feel free to make your own list. By treating the A7S the wrong way at post exposure & post, you are giving privilege to the 1D C. -
Official Atomos Shogun thread (4K, A7S, GH4, NX1)
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Thanks! That's my Lanparte base plate and carbon fibre 15mm rails, whilst the screen is on a hinge that came bundled with a Sony LED light. Tried many times to buy another hinge separately but can't find one. I have an articulated ball socket at the moment to mount the Shogun to my rails. Keeps it articulated and the whole thing lightweight but not ideal really. Going to experiment. Not a fan of putting it high up in the hotshoe, upsets the balance. -
Davinci Resolve/ Canon 7D CDNG 14bit/ export settings Win7
Andrew Reid replied to Dan Wake's topic in Cameras
I'd export from Resolve to ProRes or DNxHD after grading. You can even edit the whole shebang in Resolve 11 now, it's pretty good, then export in H.264 for Vimeo. Are you using Lightroom to fix the banding problem? Resolve 11 now has very good noise reduction built in, give it a go. -
That's true. It's online now, you can watch it here (US only) - https://www.seetheinterview.com Although you want an hour and a half of your life back afterwards.

Official Atomos Shogun thread (4K, A7S, GH4, NX1)
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
It is baffling me why 1D C users feel the need to defend their tool vs a $2199 consumer camera! I'm not going to feed the argument any more. I'll just leave you with this instead and get on with my Shogun articles http://www.eoshd.com/2014/07/25-ways-sony-a7s-trumps-canon-1d-c/ And Doug if you can expose your A7S right before doing any more tests, that would be ideal! -
Only the 4K output really.

Still preparing the blog post on that. Stay tuned. Learning as I go So far it's only working in 4K 30p on the NX1. -
Official Atomos Shogun thread (4K, A7S, GH4, NX1)
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I've already given you one. Expose the A7S with the exposure meter on the LCD so that it is 2 stops over (to the right). Doesn't matter if ISO has to go up. Just do it. Then in the grade, pull the blacks down so they are the same level as the 1D C shot. Even better, use CINE 4 in the picture profile and Cinema, not S-LOG 2, for low light shooting. You're bringing 2 stops under exposed mush out of the very darkest shadows and claiming that it looks bad. No s***! I don't care what happens when you give 1000 chickens free chicken feed from Canon. The 1D C is not free it is $12,000 and the A7S is $2200. That may not matter to you but it does to everyone else. -
Does Cinema EOS mark the end of high spec Canon DSLR video?
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Blackmagic shoots ProRes. ProRes doesn't fit in any existing workflow? Hmm.
