Sony A7S III wish list and the not-NAB 2020 no-show today
Andrew - EOSHD replied to Andrew - EOSHD's topic in Cameras
Indeed, the feature that nobody needs but everyone seems to go ape-shit over! Have you seen the fuss over the EOS R5? 8K is to be seen to be leading the technology race. I bet half the YouTubers with their mouths wide open in amazement will never use it, but for marketing purposes the higher numbers just have to keep on rolling in. -
Let's face it... Sony heard about the Canon EOS R5 and sent it back to the drawing board didn't they?! I'll be surprised if we see it at all. New blog post

The great thing about the Fp is that it is plug-and-play, and works with Macs, and even smartphones whereas the Canon DSLRs are Windows only and the software is beta. Yes, it would be nice to have more support for USB video class connections on future cameras, as Sigma has pioneered.

Yes and one of the spectators giving the McLaren boss coronavirus!
-
Great for news crews then, maybe finally they can stop shooting everything with their phones! 😁 I will have to try it out in more depth. So far, it's a new thing to me. A way to share some footage of me crashing at Monza with a couple of friends! By the way those monitors need to be driven at 165fps (165hz) each by the graphics card. It cries for mercy during every race

New blog post - read it here

Yes plus they get to sell some EOS R lenses to RED users. And I am sure there is profit in the sensor supply too.
-
Could be, something is going on! Question is why would Canon do it, what's in it for them? They are fierce competitors with Cinema EOS vs RED digital cinema cameras.
-
Canon practically pioneered large CMOS sensor manufacturing. They did not suddenly become a cutting edge sensor manufacturer!! It's just that they have been sleeping whilst they upgrade the facilities. New factories in Taiwan. New fabs capable of more modern designs. It is a major advantage they have over the competition. Everyone else has to buy Sony sensors! Canon make their own and always have. Compressed RAW internal on Canon DSLRs. RED with EOS R lens mount. A sensor supply. What next. Canon buys RED outright?!
-
You need up your bitrate and resolution to avoid compression artefacts. Try shooting Long GOP as well instead of ALL-I.

Sigma Fp review and interview / Cinema DNG RAW

It's a really great camera right now, feature packed. Yes, LOG would be nice and I am 99% sure it's coming, but I wouldn't be hesitant to use it in the V1.0 state it is in. -
Good stuff takes time.

Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K Cinema Camera Announced (FF 8K @ 75fps)
Andrew - EOSHD replied to IronFilm's topic in Cameras
Is it IMX309 in the Panasonic S1 / S1H as well? And I am asuming the 60MP one in the Z-CAM E2 F8 is also in the A7R IV. Get Canon's image processor in there immediately 😂 -
In most of those examples above it is just the orange & teal grading in action. Although doing nuanced warm and cool shades in one frame is indeed the hallmark of a nice image, in my opinion. Nuanced tones like cyan and good white balance are one of the traits of the 1D C and what separated it form just merely a "very good" 4K camera at the time like the Samsung NX1. So it isn't about 10bit. It's the white balance, colour science, and sensor. It's not quite that simple. You can't add what the camera doesn't capture. You can change hues and biases but if the baseline capture is flawed it gives you a TON of time consuming work to do AND never looks as good as a better file.

It's nice to have e-ND. The rest is total overkill! -
Sony PMW-F3 with 2500 hours on it. Should I buy it?
Andrew - EOSHD replied to basil_555's topic in Cameras
If you like lugging around very old heavy cameras, yes. -
Now the reasons for the original EOS R's weird ergonomics become clear. They wanted to save the best for the expensive model. Proper click wheel, joystick instead of THAT bar, and deeper 5D-style grip. The screen seems larger except it doesn't. Why such a thick bezel? I am positively surprised about the size BTW... Barely any larger than the EOS RP and much smaller than the Panasonic S1.

Haha wonderful. I always felt there was a change between 1D C and 1D X Mark II. Subtle one, but there.
-
You can still lose shots because of the camera no matter your skill, or choose one you dislike and that doesn't inspire you to shoot. But anyway, that's a matter for a different topic. Yes. But it has a major flaw. The battery really screws you over in 4K and it's such a serious design fault, it's impossible to recommend the SL2 for paid video work (no matter how skillful you are!!) Blog post soon

Correct! 5D Mark II was a bomb. Correct! But they wanted $15k initially for the 1D C and the ergonomics were unchanged from a 1D X. When the Panasonic GH4 and Samsung NX1 came out 2 years later, these cost under $1500 and were designed from the ground up for video shooting. EVFs, mirrorless lens mounts, articulated screens, H.265, 120fps mode (on NX1), XLR add on (GH4), it's a long list of features... all missing from Canon's 4K DSLR. Yes but in a 70D, which had an absolutely crap image even by 2013 standards. Not really. Panasonic GH5 & mirrorless got their first. DSLRs were very late to 4K/60p. Nope. Third party ones existed way before. Magic Lantern? R5 is not a DSLR but yeah, I'll give Canon this. Let's see how many weeks they are first by, if A7S III pops up next month they may not be first to the market. Depends on the actual release dates in shops. Seems that way, but again let's see what Sony's reply will be. The problem was not so much the pricing. It was the delivery of so many crappy mushy moire ridden compressed to hell 1080p line skipping cameras for much of the decade that was the problem. They didn't really have an affordable 4K solution until nearly 5 years after the 1D C came out! It's well documented on this blog. Then when the 1D X Mark II, 5D IV and EOS R came out, all had seriously frustrating shortcomings for 4K shooting and none of them surpassed the image quality or less severe crop factor of the 1D C. At least the EOS R ditched MJPEG... that's something (8 years too late but still something).

Yes, I remember saying my experience of 4K in the cinema varied in enjoyment, to say the least. Being distracted by mesmerising detail sometimes doesn't do the actual story any favours. Making everything too real looking is not the goal of most cinema. I just took delivery of a Sony native 4K cinema projector in my studio. I am going to do some long-term watching experiments versus 2K. Does 4K make for a more cinematic and entertaining watching experience? We all know the image quality is quantifiable on a computer monitor or TV when we watch our stuff back. We all upgraded, very few of us would want to go back to 'mushy' and thin 1080p camera files! But what is the experience like for the audience in the cinema? And what does 8K look like projected at 4K? Too sharp? Too much? Or not noticeable vs an Epson 1080p projector with 4K up-res / pixel shift? Should be interesting...
