fyi, both have the same processor.
NX500 was/is just crippled, however the crop is controlled by the PPUs which were not able to modify.
There are specific registers, which control how they process cropping/resampling, etc, however as soon as we touch those in memory, the thing crashes.

re the mbps - of course those are "the same", this is just the bitrate for encoding of the file, which already gets the copped/resampled image from the PPU.

NX1 gives consumers a "counterfeit" 4K video - the exisitng (HEVC Main Profile, Level 5.0) video compression outputs only 80bmps 1080p, but for 4K (as advertised) the NX1 needs Main10 Profile, Level 5.1

I was able to use a .cube file from the ARRI lut generator, but it did result in some strong saturation/macro blocking in use with resolve's 3d lut > arri > alexa clog to rec709. I have seen people match bmpcc to arri log c with the use of a color checker/resolve's color match, but have not done enough research/testing at the moment for the best method of shifting NX1's video after using resolve's color match into a log space. At the moment I have had better results with Rec.709 luts applied after using color match then converting it into a log or other space and applying a grade/lut.

NX1 in-camera "flat" profile should be able to match the ALEXA Log C

It was never designed to be better than the companies flagship.

the NX1 is crippled (by HEVC patents) since birth - 8-bit (80mbps 1920x1080 HEVC Main Profile, Level 5.0), but it should have been 10-bit (120mbps 3840x2160 HEVC Main10 Profile, Level 5.1) - Samsung has been peddling 1080p HEVC as 4K video with the NX1 ...

wow thanks for all the responses! A good point that the cost to upgrade could get me a wealth of gear (tripods, monopods, mics, gimbal) that would benefit me more than just changing bodies. Really good points made.

Maybe when something better than the NX1 comes out I can pick up an NX1 for cheap :-p

I ended up ordering a M42->NX mount adapter and a couple of M42 lenses. Not sure how they will perform, but for the price it is something worth playing around with, at least for fixed position video shooting. I will hopefully get some of the stuff this weekend and play around with it. I will of course share my findings here.

NX1 is not an 'upgrade', it is a defferent headache/experience -- NX500 has better 4K - no RS, no banding, natutal colors - if you can live with the crop ...

for NX-M42 lens setup, try the Meteor-5-1 Zoom lens 1.9/17-69mm

I've been doing some work recently that requires very accurate colors, so I wasted a few hours cycling through all of the setting in my NX1 and a Xrite Color Checker Passport

What lens did you use? Can you post an imgae of the S-Curve?

Finally got a chance to take the camera out and about over the weekend.  Here is our latest movie from a visit to the Pumpkin Patch.

Same in camera settings as last time:  Gamma DR,  Color Red/Blue @ 1.0 and Green @ .95, Saturation -1, Sharpness -10, Contrast -3, Master Black 10, Luminance 16-235

Nice, Blue and Pumpkin! Do you upload HEVC files to Vimeo? Can you try transcoding the HEVC file in RMMC with the teal-orange LUT n°8700 applied?

Are you refering to the canon 50mm or the lens used in the booster? Is it ED type of glass?
Is the first batch already shipped? When would it be shipped if I order from the second (429€) today?

This adapter features 4 optical elements including one extra-low dispersion (ED) element which reduces aberrations for better delineated images.

Good-ish news, during the week I tried the 28-135 and there is definitely movement in the lens, but I've had no time to explore further.  It seems like I might need to get a logic analyzer to have a shot at it working with newer Canon lenses.  If anyone wants to leapfrog me, there is someone that claims to have made such a working adapter for basic manual control using buttons on the adapter for focus and aperture, and was actually using it on NX. ng my posts and I thought this should be separate.

Hey Luca, I did look at the raws a few days ago.  It's solid, but not amazing, I see some loss of sharpness and other minor aberrations.  Maybe Darktable isn't doing the exposure quite right, or the adapter doesn't have great transmission, the brightness was increased by around .35 stops.  Since it's about a 1.1x crop instead of 1x a full stop isn't to be expected, but I was expecting more like .6 or .7 stops.  Still, it's pretty decent, I think I'll get one soon.
