  1. That's why I went with the K1M and a rig. More versatile, and better construction.

Not sure how else you would like Sony to have gone about doing this - especially considering the K1M and K2M are designed to work across a range of products, not just one camera in particular.

Everything is a compromise. The only way you're getting around compromise is by spending thousands of dollars on high end specific gear, and even then it's a compromise of not being as compact.

You are not sure how I would go about building a microphone adaptor? I would use a mental connection contact point instead of brittle plastic one.

"I understand that everything is a compromise..."

Is there an echo in here or do you not have anything meaningful to add?

  2. Your welcome Don.

I get your point about not damaging the camera hot shoe. But the piece of the XLR-K2M that inserts into the actual hot shoe is made from thin plastic, which to me is just waiting to snap.

I understand that everything is a compromise, but I'm getting quite tired of having to come up with bullshit work arounds  to overcome the marketing tactics on low end gear.

  3. Hi Chris, thank you for jumping in again with your insight.

I've been shooting a feature doc film on 1080 that is going to broadcast and have been looking for a new camera to continue shooting 1080 with, and the occasional 4k wide etc. The 1080 coming from the A7rii is better than anything previous I have been shooting with. Problem is that I need the camera to hold up in a very hot country and with the reports I'm concerned that shooting 4k on the A7rii will be a problem. I was hoping that that the 1080 on the A7rii would be as least as good as the A7s but it appears that is not the case.

My big question here is: how does the image compare between the A7rii and the A7s at ISO under 6400? In other words, is the 1080 image of the A7rii and the A7s comparable (on par) before ISO 6400?

  4. Oh really? That's doubley bad news. I was hoping this would be something to replace the A7s and 5D so I have one body for stills and video but looking currently like this is a no go.

These companies and their strategists know exactly what they are doing and know exactly how to position themselves by what they enable and disable in their products. I began to see this trend emerge as early as 2004. Pay more you get increased functionality, pay less and you end up frustrated and looking for work-arounds.
It wouldn't surprise me at if if these companies form strategic alliances with long range roadmaps to swing buyers in and out of their products... especially given the considerable expense of such items as lenses, it become highly profitable motive.

  5. No matter what I am going to be using the Shogun for external recording. With the pit falls of the A7r II and A7s which one produces a better image with an external recorder? Such as how does the a7s in crop mode, with speed booster, 4k and 1080p 60fps with the shogun compare to the A7r ii in full frame, 4k and 1080p 60fps with an external recorder? My priorities are heating issues, rolling shutter, moire and aliasing, color, dynamic range, sharpness and low on the list low-light.

Also is there Cineflat on the a7s?

  6. Hi Greg,

I work solo a lot of the time.

It sounds and appears (by your work) that you already have a good deal of what you need (gear and knowledge) to do the work that lays ahead. When planning your approach to collecting the material for your thesis, will you require equipment that you don't already have? For example lights? If not, keep the Canon. I kept mine because it's a solid photo camera that just works and will keep working. God knows about the Sony stuff and what the depreciation will be like on it in the next year or 2. But if you've currently in a cycle where you don't feel the need to shoot stills for the next period (say a year or more) then maybe it's ok to dump the Canon for something knowing that you will pick up something better down the road. In the end, you will make/ find more money down the road to buy new equipment anyway. Hope that helps.

  7.

I disagree.  What the poster you quoted said about Canon making cameras "that work" is objectively true.  I've been saying it for years.  When everyone raved about Blackmagic and cursed Canon I pointed out that Canon wouldn't destroy it's brand equity by releasing bugging cameras missing a bunch of essential features half a year or more late.  The worst thing I've encountered with Canon is the autofocus on the Rebels in live view mode.  And obviously on their mid to upper end cameras they made fixing that a huge priority.

I am saddened by this review because it makes is almost certain that we won't see 4k from Canon in smaller lower end bodies for quite some time.  Knowing Canon they simply will not push out a product that is going to shut down frequently or have a five minute recording limit due to heat (RX100IV, RX10II asian version).  Personally I could live with a five minute recording limit.  I've never recorded longer than that.  But that doesn't seem to be the Canon way.  I'm glad Sony is pushing the envelope but you simply can't overlook serious issues like overheating and claim it's just subjective.

If you want to learn more watch 60 seconds of this video to learn what the Canon philosophy is all about...

I don't know ya know. For me, aside from all else in this whole world... I would have really love‘d it if that old Canon dude would have given those two sissies a massive karate chop. Really.

  8. Does anyone happen to have the A7R II and the SMAD-P3 wireless RX adapter? If so do you know if it is possible to use this adapter with the 3.5mm input as channel 2?

I don't expect it to be possible since it hasn't with any of the previous cameras. It would be super nice though since it would make a really compact two ch. setup.

    Thanks!

I asked a similar question here and failed to get any answer, so I‘m guessing it‘s not possible. http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/8600-sony-a7s-audio/

  9. Nice topic Gregor.

I love films that take us to far away places. I think it's understood that it's the people in these places that pull us in and give us something to relate to in this our shared human experience. They make us feel in a way that a mountain or fluttering leaf on a tree can't.

Contra the heard and focus on character development.

  10. Same type of thing with my unit. I'm also interested in knowing what causes it?

To clarify, I am not getting the same type of lose connection sound in your Vimeo clip 00:00-00:07, but I do get that interference sound even when only a short distance from my subject. And sometimes the unit even is susceptible to the coil/ condenser electrical impulses of old motor vehicles.

  11. Interesting option Cinegain. I don't think I would have come to on my own. And good to have your insight as well Dahlfors, agreed. Thank you both.

They really wonderful thing when building a new camera/ sound package is walking into a store that has everything your need right in front of you. Nobody can beat B&H for this. Sitting on a plane for 12 hours is probably worth it in the long run, but I'm still open to options.
