And as I understand it, the C100 MkII has a one touch auto focus/ iris. Would this lens take advantage of those features?

After wading through a heap of Sony material these last weeks, and then diving back into some Canon material, it really appears obvious to me that Canon have the magic color sauce. As such, and in looking towards a new camera, I've been trying to decide between the C100mkii and the 1DC. But, as I have always understood it, there are no focusing aids in the 1DC. No need to mention just how important this is in 4k. So, can someone tell me how one can overcome this seemingly bizarre state of affairs? Loupe? External monitor?

The only down side is that it's mechanically lower quality than the 16-35mm L, not bad at all but not L roughness.

Regarding build quality, I hear that dust has a tendency to wind up inside the lens as a result. What about the actual optics, can any comment on the quality of the glass? 

It's not the cards. It's Sony packing tech into cute little packages that can't adequately dissipate the heat. They knew what would happen, but after crunching the numbers, determined that it's still a win for them. I think the question a lot of us are curios to know is if A7sii do the same?

Yes the the extra reach in the 17-55 would come in useful for sure. I guess I just sort of always heard that this lens was a mediocre option, although having never used it I can't say. Also, I'm thinking that since the 16-35 f4 is pretty new a lot of folks have never used it either. Most owners seem to love the Sigma though.

Regarding lenses for the C100 Mkii, I need a wide angle. I've been considering these:

Sigma 18-35mm f1.8

Canon 16-35mm f4 IS

Seeing as the camera itself is heavier than the dslr/ mirrorless stuff, I'm not so concerned about handheld micro-jitter, although I do understand the benefits of IS.

Looking DXO scores, the two lenses are not that much different 'overall' with the Canon performing a little sharper.

Just wondering is anyone has anything to say about these two lenses, you preferences, or other wide zooms?

Too funny Kubrickian! What's the best thing(s) in working with that camera?

I put up an expensive camera for sale on eBay a few years ago and was completely hounded by African scammers who wanted to buy it. These whole process because became such a shit show because as soon as they would click the buy button the chance for a genuine buyer was lost and it would take hours on the phone with eBay to get the camera up and for sale again only to be repeatedly hit again. This happened 10 times. To make matters worse, eBay has a largely untrained staff who do not know how to guide you towards enabling special features within your setting that will impede fraudsters. Only once you reach eBay's upper management will they disclose these setting that will allow your camera (or other items) to remain online so that a true buyer can contact you. But even when this happens, you never really know if you are selling to a fraudster or not. A small amount of security can be garnered if the buyer has a decent eBay reputation (buy/ sell track record) and then you yourself move towards other off eBay ways to confirm their identity. In the end it worked out but what a crazy process.

Nice examples docmoore, image quality is right up there. Both great lenses. Thank you for these weighing in here with these examples and your take on things.

Good to know Aaron. In most cases I'd rather start with a sharper image and have the option to diffuse it... than a soft image and nowhere to go.

I've got a small arsenal of L glass left over from my 5DM2 but I'm going to need something wider in moving towards the C100's 35mm sensor. Three lenses are on the table: Canon 16-35mm f4 IS, Sigma 18-35mm f1.8, Canon 17-55m f2.8. From everything I've come across, the Sigma takes the cake in sharpness. But then again it's missing the IS. Does anyone recommend one over another and why? My feeling is that I could get away with no IS for run and gun on the Sigma as it is still a fairly wide lens and that can help level the bumps out.

Hi Kubrickian, thank you for the straight and concise dope here. You have mentioned C-log as the way to go and I'm curios as to why you would say that when others are suggesting the wide dynamic setting. Would appreciate hear your thoughts here.

Also, can you (or anyone) point the way towards learning more on exposing for middle grey with Canon C-log? And exposing for 50-60% for caucasian skin tones? I could really use a course here.

And one more thing, the subjects of the film I'm shooting are in are South Asians. Any thoughts of exposing for their skin tones?

So for example I've seen footage on the net where the image from the C100 Mkii is nice and detailed. And, I have seen the opposite. I recently came across this and it seems to me to be a very detailed and clean image: https://vimeo.com/140112461. Yes it was recorded via a Ninja 2, so I'm wondering if this unit helped and to what degree? Moreover, I understand that there can be many variables that come into play when working towards getting the best out of a camera - lenses and apertures, lighting, etc. I guess I'm wondering what one wants to keep in mind in order to get the best out of a camera like the C100 Mkii?

Another question? I understand it, the image has been 'down sampled' to 1080 from a 4k sensor and I even read where someone was saying that because this happens 'in camera' it is the actually equivalent of having a 4k image. Can someone comment as to the 'truthiness' of this?

This camera has quite a bit going for it in terms of built in tools that help you work despite the fact that it is having its ass roasted by the competition.

A tool that helps you focus on getting the best material is worth a great deal. Especially under less than idea circumstances, which for me is a lot of the time. Although the A7 line up can produce great images, at the end of the days they are fussy little toys.

I would be a little thrilled to wake up tomorrow and discover that Canon released a firmware update that kicked the C100mkii into high gear. Alas.

Canon have the magic sauce. Just a shame they can't put it out there in a more accessible price and with greater diversity in their product lineup.

I saw a few clips the other night from a 5DM3 and the color was just great, especially after spending time look at all the Sony stuff. It's going to be a bit bizarre looking back in a decade at all the strange color and grades from this time period, it'll be like Walt Disney threw up.

Apologies if this rubbed anyone the wrong way, I‘m happy to share in everyone‘s knowledge and discoveries. It‘s just that these kinds of post remind me of tacky click bait tactics that some news sites use to lure one into reading a story and I‘ve sort of vowed to not participate in those. Ah well.
